I've been playing HM64 (I'm ashamed to admit I've never played it at length until recently), and... I dunno. It's just not doing anything for me. It's a wonderful game and I enjoy playing it! But I grew up on FoMT, so I can't, no matter how hard I try, get attached to the stories and quirks and plights of these characters in their original characterizations.
Like, I don't give a shit about tool store owner Rick, but I'd die for poultry farmer Rick; baker Elli is adorable, but she's not nurse Elli; I feel for Karen and I'm sad to see her family crumbling at every turn, but I can't bring myself to feel so strongly because I know, in a more familiar world, her home life is stable and she herself is happy.
I'm playing it more for the game itself than for the characters now, and I'm sad for that, because as soon as I put it up each night I forget all about it and cease to care.
Now I know how 64 purists feel about FoMT and all of its fame.
