Audio Myths-Busting series EP.4 "High-Pass Filter, Low Cut Frequency" (Q&A Myths Demystified)
*Beware wall of text* (as always)

"EQ are not easy as it look. Proper EQ can make or When it's not proper. Can break a tracks"

"The common misconception that you should high pass all of your tracks except the kick and the bass."

Q: Apply High Pass Filter on the track that doesn't need Low end, isn't that make sense?
    A:
EQ isn't so simple as it look, Because every filters introduce phase shifting into your signal, It's affected the phase coherence.

Example: i use tone generator to generate sine wave at 1kHz and I do a HPF at 100Hz. In theory it shouldn't affect the sound at 1kHz at all, Because 100Hz HPF and 1kHz is too far away from each other. The result. is sound the same, It's not affected in the sound wave of course. But it affected in a phase coherency. This is actually how filter work "There is always some phase shifting happening when using a filter" The more steep of the filter slope the stronger effect of phase shifting become.

Q: Normal bell EQ does not affect from phase shifting?
    A:
No. The Bell EQ actually is just a 2 filter combine, No matter what cut or boost.

Q: Ok, We got the phase shift and we got another phase shift on every channel, That shouldn't matter right?
    A:
Not completely. EQ doesn't linearly affected the same way. Which mean if i start to sweeping frequency of tone generator around, The spectrum of phase linearity start to drift around, and that is expected. Because of the way the filter works. This is something to keep in mind the next time you adding High-Pass Filter.

Q: So, I just using Linear Phase EQ to compensate for that and it should be fine?
    A:
It's doesn't work that easy, Because Linear Phase EQ can give you more problem than it solved the problem.

I will explain about Linear Phase EQ, But that's something for different Audio Myths-Busting episode.

Conclusions (If you read all of this, Please don't take everything too serious)

    - Don't do HPF by default, is like a blindly fix something that's not gonna work.
    - If you high pass your tracks too much, you lose a lot of the low end energy in your mix and the highs make it sound harsh and brittle. You're basically taking away the balls of the track. Try attenuating the lows (perhaps with a shelf) instead of cutting them.
    - Because filters introduce phase shifts into your signal, you're creating phase problems which build up in the mix between certain elements - especially if your're high passing multi-tracks instruments separately. Therefore if you must high pass such instruments, high pass them together at the bus stage.
    - Because of the resonant bump (regardless of visual of EQ show to you) at the cutoff point of a pass filter, don't high pass all of your tracks at the same frequency. For instance, if you're cutting all of your tracks at 80Hz, you're going to get a build up around 80Hz.
High Pass Filter (Low cut) are actually do more harm to the tracks than you might thought.

I will wrote more about this.
I have no idea why renri sound so gritty and raspy, when it sit around A4-C5 range and voice start to get angry.
    the result is very impressive.

my luka doesn't have that luxury... unless using Hard vb with EVEC - Hard 2 and push it to sing at high pitch to trigger the tension.
This is more like a sharing personal experience when it come to working, it can adapt to almost everything.

“Deadlines are vital. They require commitment"

Plan your finish line, Productivity comes down to your approach. And part of any good approach is a solid deadline. Starting a thousand projects but never finishing anything is a plague when it comes to making stuff.

I know most people feel guilty about this at some point. So set a deadline for your project and stick to it. Respect it. Even if they’re not perfect, you’ll still have the freedom to move on and start something else. Nothing good comes from toiling away on a project for too long. You end up going in circles wondering “haven’t I been here before?”

Experimenting is good and it's fun. I love to do this stuff, but at the same time is like you wander in a rabbit hole, before you know, You do experiment endlessly and gaining very little to nothing in return.

    My teacher told me once.
"A mix is never finished. You're run out of time, you need to commit and move on"

Yes. As the time goes, we gain more experience, the results will getting better and work faster.

Commitment is sound so simple, but surprisingly hard.
    I completely forgot when i made a Audio Myth-Busting series EP.1

Plugins nowadays (not all of them) including analog modeling one are made to run better at high sampling rate (preferably 96kHz and above) because they create those harmonic or color more accurately. but can you hear the different? i don't have answer for that, i never done experiment before.
but if those hamonic is inside audible range (around 30Hz-16kHz) you might be able to hear it, probably.

A few DAW be able to do a process before export to the current setting.
Example: Reaper, it have option to use project sampling rate for mixing and FX/Synth processing.
meaning if your project sampling rate setting is 192kHz, when you export, it will process all the stuffs at 192kHz, and down-sampling (with proper filter) to the current sampling rate setting.
    I
    inactive
Reaper's downsampling isn't that great—even Audacity does a better job. Besides, you'll get better results by simply using nonlinear plugins that support internal oversampling.
A little chat with PA talking about event and prizes, i though it was funny so i put it here.

PA: Hello! what i can help you.
Me: i am here for claim the prize.(sign my name and ID)
PA: Because you're in top 5 so you can choose more of this include that speaker monitor.
Me: (pick a few piece and sign my name)
PA: Wait why don't you pick the speaker? it's more expensive and more useful.
Me: my room is small (show him a picture)
PA: Understandable. Have a nice day.

He's was so kind and compensate all things i should have and turn in to money.
    Highly Recommended.

Not a famous artist, seriously no one know about him, even google+youtube algorithm will struggle.
His song is always in my phone. I actually made a keyboard cover this song but never upload it.
cheer up song with touching lyrics is always my recommend.

Mixing contest week 3 is finally come the end, We start at number 85-90 of people who join the contest.

    conclusion of 3 week.

Week 1 mostly general knowledge quiz, technical, psychological test. DAW structure, Digital and Analog knowledge, sampling rate, bit depth, aliasing, nyquist frequency formula. DAW knowledge. Setup (protools), utilize template, and create a rough mixes, no plugins allowed.
One of the hardest thing is the mind game, and a lot of ear testing (Frequency, Q factor, slope, gain, pitch, keys, decay, Attack, release, distortion, saturation)

first week has pass, the number drop down to roughly 26-32... they really mean business.

Week 2 Field testing and equipment knowledge. How much you know about tools, how it actually works, what's it inside, Pros n Cons, tell about the type of compressor, eq, limiter, clipper, distortion, stauration, reverb, delay, etc, how it's behaves, what's curve look like on every equipment (draw it) and explain to those engineer and artist that stand behind you.

week 2 has pass, only 12 of us left.

Week 3 is basically a how to stay alive day to day simulator.
Working in the studio, with real artist only have 4 hr (per person) create a good mix and mastering engineer will do critique.
i see that artist really enjoy this contest and they actually willing to help us (by hint), also the engineer tried to help us by his face expression.....
    I know... that sound weird...

Only 10 place left for all of us, I got 4th place.
After mixing contest is officially closed, I have been interviewed for a very long time (2hr).

Summary: They told me about the purpose of this event, During the first 2 weeks of testing everything other than how to use a DAW, ear testing, do a rough mixes is meaningless.

"We just want to know your personality, The way you interact with other human beings.
As for the prize, Please take it as a gift. We all thank you for joining mixing contest"

    i'm speechless.
I forgot about this free Orchestra sound.

I might sell the AN1x soon. due to annoying firmware.
Considering how counter-intuitive and tedious the AN1x is to program.

    The AN1x is a first-generation that use DSP-based analog modeling since 1997
*Multi-track recording mode. All synthesizers sound and effect are 100% AN1x except for drums.
    got surprise by accident.
    stacking vowels like a a a a, i i i i, e e e e make sound more engaging.

Luka actually sound good when it come to pronounce the word like シェイク (SHE-I-KU, Shake) or ライン (RA -I-N, Line) or テイスト (TE-I-SU-TO, Taste) and also can acting cute voice like Ho-p*po, Do-ra-i-bu, wa-ku wa-ku etc, try to playing with pitch, portamento, and velocity
actually the Vel, play the big part when it come to pronounce, but I see that most people don't even care or touch it.

trial error is still..time consuming but worth sometime.
    Here we go again.
Yamaha's re-trigger symptoms, can you just stop stacking PCM sawteeth for the love of god please.
I got a feeling that cancer gonna be cure before yamaha fixing their own damn firmware.
I'll use vocaloid to make a living for quite sometime now, it's not my main job ofc, but you get my point. Just to give an idea.

When it's come to cover a song, both singing, playing and live performance, Is quite popular in my country (to some degree)
I working with people who like to cover a song by singing with live performance (band) and the singer, she's not so good at harmonic parts, both low and very high pitch and her english accent is not quite meet the standard. This is where the vocaloid come into play.
I see this as my opportunity, so i do a demo, create a contact, agreement, I try to impress her a few time by showing what voice synth can do, and also the basic voice programming.

I've working with her for a few song, both technical supports and live performance to gain her confident. and Finally, My agreement is successfully signed.
and That's how my career started. We have been working together for about 2 years now.
I also use synth voice to create an "Instrument" for use in live performance and production, eg. sampler, organic, ambient, pads, choir, atmosphere etc.
and people are quite like it.

The element of surprise are very powerful, Use it to attract the attention from client. Impress the people and show what it really can do.
also if you guys have knowledge about music theory, playing skills, technical skills, it's almost guarantee success.
you don't have to master at everything, Just enough to get around.

I'm quite surprised that people willing to pay a decent price for synth voice performance.
In my opinion, the synth voice are unique in the sense of it's have robotic tone, it's glue to the real voice so well and that's make real voice stand out up-front.
and very flexible because it's a voice synth, you can program it in various way.
