UK uni courses usually ask students to stick to one format because we don't normally have to take classes that are completely outside our original courses. (Example: I did a combined History and War Studies degree, and the most "out there" course I had to take was a class in Capitalism, but it still allowed us to use the Chicago referencing system like all the History classes used). Referencing formats are annoying to use and remember, but I still highly prefer Chicago over Vancouver (we had to use Vancouver for one big essay in college, and it irritated the crap outta me).

Dang, that sounds amazing, Blue. US Universities usually default to MLA format, especially for base Comp classes, but the more writing-intensive classes you take the more formats you have to use. I'm a writing major, for example, and I'm also taking a psych course; for my 16 credit hours this semester, I have to use MLA, Chicago, and APA, all for different classes. It suuuuuuuucks.

Sounds like a nightmare to remember. :( US colleges and unis to me seem to be based on confusing the hell out of students and wasting time, from what I'm understanding on some of the college status updates on here. I wouldn't say UK unis are perfect (our tuition fee prices are astronomical now), but at least many courses jump into the actual points of the course, rather than forcing students to take random, not-always-relevant classes like some US courses do.
im going halloween costume shopping this weekend and im so excited! I worked on halloween night last year so I'm so happy I get to celebrate this year!
I finally stopped running all of my Tumblr blogs because I'm so sick of the over all attitude on that site. Everyones gotta have a problem with everything. I really like the blog format but my goodness is it just a hot mess over there.

Honestly, it's horrible. Every fandom somehow found drama. I was chief fanfic author of the Kung Fu Panda fandom - the KUNG FU PANDA fandom had intense drama and even violence at time. A major fandom artist called me, and I quote, a "stain on society" for 1.) writing smut and 2.) not characterizing Tigress the way she liked.

It's just a mess. I only go on Tumblr to look at fan art nowadays, but I never engage anymore.

I left Tumblr ages ago because it got so toxic. I'm just trying to have fun and see interesting content, but everybody just starts posting depressing and/or toxic stuff so it just kills the enjoyment. >.>
I thought about starting an ask blog, but remembered "oh. wait. I left this site for a reason... no thanks."

It's a shame the community as well as the staff are a mess because I really like the blog mixed with social media format. There's some really cool accounts you can make if you're creative and it's a really good platform for certain things, but the majority of the users are angry and dramatic and the people running the site don't know how to fix problems (porn bots posting illegal things? ban all nsfw content and don't even get rid of the bots!) The whole thing is such a great idea with some of the most abhorrent execution I have ever seen.
my 3ds wont read any games i put in it im so sad

I'm so sorry! Have you Googled what might be wrong with it? It might be something you can get fixed at a repair shop. If all else fails, you can sell it for parts and put that towards a new one. 3DSs have gone way down in price.

i looked it up and it might be that a pin inside is out of place. its something i can possibly fix myself but i have very shaky hands so im gonna see if a shop can do it. i called one shop though and they didnt seem to want to do it (told me buying a new one is usually easier than fixing an old one). But Id rather just get this one fixed because it was a gift and i dont like to get rid of gifts, so im gonna keep calling around and see if someone will do it!

In the UK, you usually only have to take three classes a semester if you're doing uni full time, and three is already pretty stressful for many British students. (Having three deadlines meet on the same week was never fun when I was doing my Bachelor's.) I don't understand the pressure in America to take on more than three college classes.

Holy crap. Here, 3 classes usually equates to 9 hours, which is part-time - you'd need at least 12 hours to be considered full-time here in the US, and you're often pressured to take 16-18 hours. (I'm taking 16 this semester, for example.)

@cafenurse , that's great! Drop a class now if you need to. Focus on your base credits, go at your own pace. If you're worried about falling behind, most colleges offer online courses over the summer, and taking one or two of those can help keep you on track. You've got options. Prioritize yourself!

@uncreepy's right, the academic aspects of college are no joke.

Personally, the thing that was more difficult for me was the other aspect you sometimes hear them talk about during the orientation-type meetings you go to before/early in college: it might be the first time you're away from home.

When you hear that, you imagine that it refers to people who miss their families. While I did that to some extent, I'd really prefer to rewrite that phrase somewhat like this: college is when you take another step toward being out in the "real" world.

Granted, not everyone's home life is good, so this might not apply to everyone. And some people's lives are such that they meet the "real" world much sooner. But as I see it, while you're in high school, "home" is accessible, and it's sort of like a bubble that's always there. You go to school, get through all the craziness, and then come home, step into the bubble, and clean up the aftermath; the next day, you do it again. Even when you're going through stuff at school, the idea that the bubble is only a few hours or minutes away is comforting.

If you go away to college, though, the bubble basically disappears. It's you, and the "real" world is right there against your skin every moment (Especially if your roommate has very different priorities regarding college than you.). In a way, it feels like being watched; it's an unrelenting, almost adversarial presence.

But I think one of the goals of growing up is to eventually face that presence and grow into it. Because the "real" world, where everything is on you, is the world that everyone eventually inhabits. From that perspective, I think college is a good thing in that way, though it's not an aspect they advertise: it's a controlled place where you deal with that rite of passage into being, or nearly being, an adult.

The good news is that that feeling does eventually go away. Maybe in a few weeks, maybe in a semester or so. You'll find your favorite places in the environment that used to feel worrisome and alien. And having initially felt resistance to your sudden immersion in the thick of the "real," you'll at some point find that you're some kind of acclimated resident there. If you were sort of like a diver before, who disliked having the "real" water right up against you, you'll find that you now feel more like a fish--there are still predators, but it's more your ocean. Don't get me wrong, the "bubble" does sort of come back, too, particularly when you get a place that's more your own, either by moving out of the dorm (some people do) or graduating and moving back home/getting a dwelling of your own.

You'll find lots of fond memories in college, too. I made friends there, though regrettably we lost touch. I can also remember watching an anime episode or two in the evenings (That sort of thing helped me feel less isolated, too, during that initial period.), even finding an old episode of a favorite show I hadn't seen in years and watching it while eating microwave lasagna. There was a movie I'd always wanted to see, too, that I remember finding in the library and watching, too. There were lots of nights where I worked late without worrying about bothering anyone and fell asleep with my books. And sometimes holing up and working all day, which was the first time I ordered pizza delivery. They're little things, but those kinds of things, as well as the freedom to handle the situation's many challenges in your own way, are the things you'll enjoy, or else remember kindly.

So I guess what I'm saying is just to sort of hang in there. It will get better, and for what the experience will do for how you grow, for providing the tempering that helps with coping with life, for the changes in how much you know and how you think, the experience is definitely worth it. It's definitely not as bad as it looks at first; some of it you'll remember as enjoyable for a long time.
