  • I'll admit it now, the first time I heard Kevin's name, I immediately thought of Kevin the sea cucumber from SpongeBob lol.

Since he got announced, I feel weird seeing one of my cousins' name here (though it isn't spelt the usual way so it's not 100% but still lol)
Soooo, someone's leaked the Hisuian designs for more Pokemon in Legends Arceus, and as someone who defended SwSh on the whole, even I had to admit some of the designs are... bad. I won't share any pictures here because spoilers, but I will say Palkia has been BUTCHERED.
I haven't really talked about my PhD since I was accepted into the course because... Who else on here really wants to hear me babble on about the history of autism in Britain? Plus, all I've really been doing for the last few months is write up the literature review, which is taking up a lot of time considering I've had to research the currently lacking historiography of autism in general. (The short version: academics didn't give a monkeys about autism history until around ten years ago).

So yeah, the reason I haven't talked about uni recently is because I'm stuck at the tedious stage.
Erm... So I tried shaving the sides of my head yesterday, mainly because my pixie cut was getting way too fluffy on the shaved parts and it was annoying the crap outta me, and my mum was too scared to touch my hair with an electric shaver. It went about as well as you'd expect, considering I did it myself and I obviously can't see the back of my head lmao.

Okay, the sides of my head aren't too bad... It's the back that looks awful. My stepdad's offered to try and fix it, but my mum is still upset, so I might just wait until I see my hairdresser next week.

Which begs the question... Why the hell did I shave my hair when I could have just waited to go to a hairdresser? Sigh.
Fourth part of my tattoo done, and because it's close to the part of my elbow where it bends all the time, I'm now in more excruciating pain than usual. Think I'll just play Pokemon Shining Pearl tonight and rest it off.
So apparently, BDSP are so faithful to the originals that they've brought back some of the old glitches from DPP, like the void glitches with Darkrai and Shaymin. There's also a severe softlock issue with the puzzle in Snowpoint gym if you leave the autosave on (basically, it's entirely possible to trap yourself within the snowballs. One poor sod managed to get himself softlocked in there because the game autosaved as soon as he got stuck. I think the issue existed in DPP, but at least you could manually save before that happened.) Fortunately, there seems to be a secret menu on the title screen where you can load a backup save, but this implies the devs knew some people would accidentally softlock themselves at certain points.

This is going to sound insane but I hope it was intentional.

I will concede that this will probably be the closest I'll ever get to seeing a SpongeBob vocal synth.

And this isn't even the first time that's happened. I guess that's what happens when you live near a nature reserve. orz
Obviously, we only have canon birthdays for Miku, Rin, Len and Luka. But if Miku and the twins were 16 and 14 respectively in 2007, and Luka was 20 in 2009, this would mean that Miku should have been born in 1991, the twins in 1993 and Luka in 1989. And if the Cryptonloids aged in real time, that would also mean Miku should be 30, the twins should both be 28 and Luka should be 32 in 2021.
Seeing people talking about their "Vocaloid phase" makes me sad/grumpy, because they perpetuate the myth that Vocaloid (and vocal synths in general) has gone dead when it never did, the nature of the fandom just changed. (More specifically, the Western fandom moved past its weeaboo stage and matured.) It also makes me feel kinda weird as someone who hasn't stopped listening to Vocaloid since I discovered it in 2008, because nowadays vocal synths are almost like a genre or style I listen to and judge on its own merits alongside the multiple others things I enjoy.

To further illustrate, I have multiple Vocaloid albums sitting alongside trance, vintage electronic, punk, New Wave and pop albums on my iPod. At some point, I know some metal stuff will be on there, so it's gonna turn into a musical potpourri.

I can understand what you're saying. Personally, I think those sorts of discussions about a "Vocaloid phase" irk me for a different reason: they imply that whoever is saying it was into it for awhile, and then grew out of it in the same way that they grew out of other childish things.

I think it's best to take what they say at exactly face value, though: it was a thing that they went through and then moved on from. Personally, I only discovered vocal synths 4 years ago, and I regarded what I found as something valuable. I've committed large quantities of time, effort, and thought to learning new skills; come to better understand myself and other people; and appreciated new artwork and music. I intend to stay. For whatever reason (maybe to some extent because of the earlier "weeaboo" mentality), their experience was more temporary. I do wish that, whether intended or not, they could keep their implication that a vocal synth interest is something childish to themselves, though. Because, whether it actually is or not (which I think is debatable), an interest even in things associated with children does not necessarily yield only childish results.

@mobius017 Oh, the "childish" implication irks me too! Some people in nerd circles still look at you funny if you're an adult who listens to Vocaloid, as if it's something squarely aimed at kids and teens. (Never mind the deep learning curve for vocal synths...)

Yeah. It sort of confused me when I first heard people talk like that. I got into Vocaloid when I was in college back in 2007. Early on it was young adults that made up the main demographic of fans.

What has made me stick around for 14 years is the crowd-sourced, by-fans-for-fans nature of the songs, art, and animation. There's a sincerity to it all that you don't get anywhere else. A person doesn't make a Vocaloid song because they want to be in the spotlight. They do it because they have something inside they feel the need to express. And the anonymity and abilities a vocal synth provides allows some people to make music who otherwise wouldn't have.

There are no executives or marketers to tell them what content is or isn't allowed, or whether to publish something or not based on how well it will sell. Plus, it's amazing to listen to all the covers and remixes people are able to make without some record company issuing takedown notices.

On top of all that, the technology is cool. It's been amazing seeing it improve over the years.
The recent discussion on the Anri thread about babyfaces has made me realise that I've managed to shed off my babyface status by cutting my hair short. Prior to that, people would legit mistake me for a 15-year old when I'm actually 25. Nowadays, I probably look like an undergrad student rather than the PhD student I actually am, but at least people automatically assume I'm an adult now lol.
Got the third section of my tattoo sleeve done yesterday, and now I'm halfway through! I also thought it would be a good idea to finally show it off on here.

Apologies for the potato image quality and darkness - my phone's camera sucks lol.
Sometimes, I do miss having long hair, namely the ability to wear ponytails. But then I start remembering how much of a nightmare it was to maintain my hair when it was long and curly (frizzy ends and lengths... o_e), and the horrible state it was all in by the time I did cut it short. Although I can't really style my short hair any differently from its default state now, I'd still rather keep it short than try to grow it out again because I know history will repeat itself if I did.

I'm also starting to realise that instead of actually wanting long hair on myself, I'm just attracted to women with long hair. Lol.
Guess who's stepdad has tested positive for Covid on a lateral flow test, and is now waiting for a PCR test to properly confirm it? 🙃
AAAHHH MY DISABILITY LETTER HAS FINALLY BEEN FULLY FIXED! I was gonna complain to my needs assessor about not responding to my email from last week, but a new letter came through this afternoon saying that my academic tutor has finally been amended to the right provider, which means I now have my old tutor back! Now everything on the disability side of things should be in place for my PhD. :)
