  • i have never used synth v very consistently since i never owned a full vb until now, so since i am now, i have been able to really see what i do/dont like...

    goods:
    - i do like, for the most part, how notes can be carried. the ease of switching between "-" and "+" becomes very easy, not causing me to have to stop and do advanced edits just tab, enter the character, tab, enter the character, etc. however some words just did not work how i expected them to when i used "-" which is a little annoying, the way synth v carried some words when entered is not at all like what i want (oddly vocaloid gets it right for some of those words).
    - the sorta 'curve' tool for drawing on parameters is nicer than the lines imo, mostly with how it creates the nodes
    - the interface is sleek and nice to look at, easy to read really. its not a huge pro over like, vocaloid, its just nice to look at lol :P
    - i do like there is a default "hum" sound if you dont have a voice in. kinda nice to at least hear, and it reminds me i didnt select a voice- instead of silence where it might confuse me if my sound is off- just a nice lil detail

    bads:
    - the sidebar on the right. i didnt like it before and i still dont. 99% of the time i forget what the symbols mean so i just click on them over and over and then i have multiple open again i forget which is which, so i close the wrong ones.... it aint good. theres good information in there! but i forget it exists all the time!!
    - in relation, the way it exports the vocal tracks did confuse me quite a bit coming from programs like vocaloid where its under export > export as wav.... its worded in a way i have never heard and the fact its hidden in the right sidebar makes me forget where it is
    - again has some issues with the automatic phonemes/dictionary and the way words where carried. often times words ending in N or "n't" would not carry properly when i used "-" and it was very annoying. a few other words straight up did not work ("choir" was one i recall)
    - it seems you cannot use + if the notes aren't connected??? if im mistaken let me know but every time, it did not work. which is.... very annoying

aside take this mini review as, i think it has some nice parts! and its easy to use. but i wouldnt say its any easier to me than vocaloid- theyre both technically the same imo with a few things missing or added. that fuckin sidebar tho....

also in regards to the curve tool over line tool for parameter drawing.... vocaloid 5 makes it all look "choppy" and i realize that, when it may not actually affect the sound very much, it just looks nicer for it to be all smooth lol. in vocaloid 4 i often use a plugin called "parameter smoother" just because, since it smoots out my shaky hand drawing.
something have kinda been balanced in my life and i actually really really wanna make original songs again.... i may just tackle instrumental for a bit bc im unsure if i really wanna keep making vocal synth songs regularly. but im listening to some of the files i have unfinished and i really like what i have made and i wanna make more tbh

Hmm... The success of the above cover reinforces my own experiences with Eleanor Forte AI: she's a crooner. That is to say, her AI was trained by a vocalist who sang into the microphone at a talking level, similar to Frank Sinatra and other singers of his era. There's nothing wrong with that per se, but it really isn't gelling with the songs that I had prepared in anticipation of Eleanor Forte AI's release. I guess I'll have to wait until Solaris AI (or whatever it's called this month) is available.

ah i agree! that is definitely what i was thinking but did not know the way to word it... i will be honest i even feel that way about her original bank too, just that their ranges are a little different. i would say i still find her to sound good in the range i have tried her with but, it can be hard to work her into other genres because of that. @parallax_fifths

i still havent finished anything but these were the few things i did with her, all of wish i think sound pretty decent but i didnt really feel like she was standout in any of the covers i plugged her into? mostly because of how i feel with her, much like your own statement.
(last one probably the most fitting)

shes got a lovely tone and all, but the way she seems to be in range kinda suits her to certain songs over others. i think id be fine making an original song with her voice, as i would suit the song to her voice- but with covers im kinda just jumping to every file i have thinking 'this sounds nice, but it doesnt really fit'. i still like her way more than her old bank so i think i will still use her
today has been plugging and playing ever english file i own but not actually mixing a single cover because im so indecisive.... they sound nice but i guess im also a little bored because technically i have used all these files and covered them lol. but im also a tad too lazy to cover something new either
not to sound potentially illegal for a moment but man lately what is it with getting downloads in very unsecure ways? i got eleanor on a google drive that i could surely link to anyone....(edit: did test the link on a not logged in account n yeah, i could click it) sure, you need a serial, but people cracking these softwares would easily get their hands on her early like that. making it easy to steal means itll be easier to crack (i have heard of some difficulty with synth v cracks over others but the point still stands in being able to use that link)

but also i have expirienced this with other things too. i got Psychonauts 2 (the game) early as a backer and it was a torrent link which again. i could link to anyone and DL as much as i wanted, and it had no DRM! so like. free game basically??

it seems a little risky to do that, mostly for an even tinier company like volor.
gotta sit down soon and try open utau... the stuff it has for english banks in terms of making usts sounds like exactly what i need. i would be lying if i said i didnt avoid using my own english utaus because i really hate figuring out the phoneme side of it all...

its simply my autistic and adhd ass going "i get it but, if it has too many steps i suddenly lose all energy to do it because its too many steps" so knowing theres some tools in open utau that kinda eleviate that makes me interested. i really like english utaus and i wanna remake my own, but not if im gonna skimp out and not use it so i wanna give it a shot lol. i will let up the steps to do something if it means it will be easier later, really
i think in the last year i have mentally become at peace with flower cevio AI being of an unknown status. like. not really because id say everything coming of cevio will be bad, but its just like. part of me also doesnt want to see the potential terrible fate to flower on cevio. however sad the seemingly expected death of gynoid would be....im also ok with her just. staying as she was last ya know lol
    morrysillusion
    morrysillusion
gynoid twitter literally only reposting the same merch tweet for...so long.......does not spell hope to me lol. obviously no human has picked up the twitter accounts since the previous person left and im surprised its been so long
    morrysillusion
    morrysillusion
and not to conspire too much but the release of flower talk showed some changes in her direction imo that would make me a little iffy about where cevio could take her- in the sense that she may start to go down a path more similar to those voices being made for cevio... i say in the sense that, gynoid's creations alone have their own uniqueness, so if they were to start chasing the look and trends of successful voices on cevio then i would easily be dissapointed (looking at the changes of IA and her very miku-like redesign...and the much more moe look to talk flower....it has me thinking)

it is impossible to know what is going on with the supposed flower cevio at this point. maybe shes been reworked multiple times? maybe gynoid and cevio have something going on (conflict? a deal? being merged?), who knows. she could pop up next week suddenly. idk.
i was reminiscing on some old covers of mine and counted... i have made at almost 200 covers with v flower (this is partially due to that year i ended up making 100 flower covers as a challenge orz) since i got her in 2016
    morrysillusion
    morrysillusion
the number is a bit loose since i counted by the total folders in my "finished" folder for flower, but there may have been some missing since i did loose everything from 2016 to mid 2017, but undoubtedly i have 150-175 after that 100 cover challenge
i have healed decently from my surgery now after almost 3 weeks so i am more on my computer in general right now and i guess i will pop in to make a quick status after distracting myself with other things to enjoy. i dont plan to repeat my thoughts too much as i very very well expressed this on my status from October 13th (i guess you cant link status posts orz...) and in order to deal w circulating negative thoughts i dont think ill take part in more intense discussions here for a while- and imo this includes jokes and memes too, theres only so many self depricating critical jokes i can take about what i enjoy before that too becomes harmful to be around.

i think all discussions have a place, even those of the more critical nature, but i think it can really be a downer when it feels like thats almost all there is- and thats how i feel recently. its hard to pull myself away due to my ocd and the habits is forces upon my interactions... but i will be around and i hope to simply share things i like, post art, covers, etc and get excited for what new things are coming in vocal synths.
some less than stellar interactions have made me not want to be here recently so i probably wont be for a while. (i know ironically falling in line w some other ppl bouncing but its not related lol its different and more specific to some interactions i have been having in relation to the voca community, not nessecarily on this forum)
tbh one of my main drives to use singing synths is that i just like hearing them sing. i just like plugging in different voice and hearing the voices. i avoid buying new voices purely out of that drive, since i really only do it randomly out of boredom and try to keep to trials and lite vbs. but i ordered eleanor and anri, i only have eleanor's lite vb, so im kinda extra hype to have some actual new full voice banks after many many months of not purchasing new voices.
its been quite a while since i unlisted all of my vocaloid videos.... and it feels nice, i feel good not being bothered by those anymore and not feeling like that is my entire identity on my youtube channel. my sonic/shadow utau remains and i only get dumb comments on those every so often now.
there isnt a single day that goes by where my dyslexic brain doesnt read IA AI wrong every time. is it AI IA? AI AI? IA IA? IA AI? i dont fucking know anymore
"i shouldnt pick up this impulse cover right before surgery i wont have time to work on it and probably will lose inspiration when im back!" i say as i literally start covering 4blood with flower

i havent made her sing in english in SO long mostly bc i havent had any english songs i remotely wanna work on. i only really like the aesthetics of this song too lol
the Chimera album is So good... all the collabs sounded lovely (and im happy for the abundance of flower). its here if you havent heard it! CHIMERA by Various Artists

Thank you for the reminder, I was initially a bit troubled that I couldn't find it on apple music despite typing the same title in to the search..I ended up typing it in Japanese for it to show up, a little bit ironic perhaps(lol).
a hot topic so im tucking it away into this status and not a thread bc id rather ramble to myself
in regards to the idea of characters looking too young based off age i often wonder if people can also realize that a young/teen aged character =/= doesnt mean bad? like we can have teens in media and have it be fine? i feel like there is always a tricky line to draw between a character just being allowed to be young versus a character that was clearly designed to be exploited ya know, and thats been a conflict in recent vocal synth releases/announcements. like the first vocaloids to come to mind as young/teens but are like Normal and not done weird is Matcha and Asuki (who i dont see official ages for but they are noted to be "school girls" and i have to assume thats ya know, high school). like, we have all kinds of media with teens and there is nothing inherently wrong about that! but then we go over to a voice like Fee, who was underage and clearly described in ways that was gross. i assume or hope people realize that is the focus of criticizing age and appearance. it feels like its hard to win when instead of thinking "lets stop making adults who look like babies" and say "well if they look like a teen and are a teen that makes sense"- it is hard to win, mostly when the fans' intentions can be worse than the company's

in the end its not just the age, its not just the design. its the culture that has normalized the stylization of girls in ways to attract people- be it through skimpy clothing or youthful teen appearances. not every designer is out to make this a problem on purpose, not everyone is actively creating a problem, i wouldnt point a finger at anyone specific because its not possible. and having young characters isnt inherently bad nor is young looking characters, but there is still always a trend to analyze imo because its such an active problem in eastern animation media. i would gladly welcome high school aged character and voices if they take after the idea in a totally normal way and i would equally welcome young looking adults if it didnt always feel like they were picking up a look that was strangely inappropriate for the age they're trying to look like

the important thing to always remember though, is no matter how respectfully it may be tackled there will always be gross people in the world who look at the teen or look at the teen-looking adult and see something worse to do. that cant be avoided ever, no matter the critisisms made on these issues. its hard to be aware when its such an un-fun topic but ive been around anime since i was a child, its hard not to see the issue in things when you've been directly affected by such a fandom culture.

(and like i know talking about being baby-faced irl has been brought up as like a reason its not a big deal bc it happens in real life but i have genuinely faced some odd and disgusting shit for many years due to looking like a teen... like im not gonna go into it but i wouldnt say being baby-faced irl doesn't have its issues too aside from ppl asuming you're not 21, people can be gross and speaking up about any of this kind stuff is important to me due to that. plus you living a simple normal life while looking like this isnt relevant at all to art work and concious choice to design characters like that. anyways yes watch me leave this here and not open vvn for days <3 understandably this is just a rough topic for me lol)
this could probably be a journal entry but im too lazy to find that thread

there is this kind of... collective negativity i feel builds in pretty much any online space that allows discussion to happen, mainly discussion that often spirals into dislikes only and not much else. i took a break from here a couple months ago that was kinda related to that, but its sparked up again because the topics of fandom discourse and opinions have been quite relevant in between the valid opinions of recent vocal synth news. the conflicting part is that its not that there is something inherently wrong with negative opinions, but rather noticing a sorta... domino effect in such discussions. mostly in a community like this, as much as i would say this place has the most civil discussion i see (in comparison to say, twitter) that doesnt stop it from sometimes being an echo chamber. like i feel when negative opinions spawn they kinda just keep rolling and rolling sometimes, snowballing as multiple other people react (often outside of a contained thread, which makes it spread more and more). it almost feels nonstop and hard to avoid but it is normal people would feed more negative opinion topics because people often like to share what they feel others need to know or hear.

this analysis, again, isnt to say "stop talking about negative things!!" because its also not specific to here-- social media/social online spaces, is just like that. someone says something, someone on the feed sees it, they make their own post to share their own view, more ppl see it and either comment or continue the discussions in their own posts, and so on. its great to have a discussion, but i find those heavily negative "yeah i dont like [thing]"/"im finding myself to hate [thing] now"/"[thing] just isnt good anymore"/"there are so many problems with [thing]" to obviously be a bit exhausting to witness over and over, mostly when they become such common topics, and they seem almost never ending as people just keep up the chain reaction of one post to the next- often times there isnt much of a point to saying such things after a while.

i like discussion, i like coming here for news and discussions, and sharing the negative opinion is never the wrong thing to do- critique is always valid even more so in a fandom where things like young characters are often exploited for popularity and fan service etc, so many other bad things that should be spoken out about. but i think all of us at some point find ourselves feeding more and more negative topics with an unclear drive (i certainly have, and i think its impossible to not if you do more than lurk) but the more i distance myself from more active social media i really see how that kinda domino effect of topics is just not fun. i dont really want to come here just to see ppl say how much they lost hope for vocaloid, or hate synth v, or whatever resurfacing opinion about cevio and then see the discussion carried on for days or weeks bc random little status updates or posts keep triggering it to be discussed again and again. it has nothing to do with me agreeing or disagreeing with those things.

theres undoubtedly a point where i sigh, step back and decide not to check the forums. which i will no doubt keep doing, or perhaps do it for a longer time. its not about censoring yourself or censoring all "negative" things but theres something good in recognizing where things go too far and they affect the way you look at the spaces youre in. from twitter, to tumblr, to forums, etc- ive been on the internet long anough to feel that kinda negative fandom echo chamber really weighing down on me. sometimes it feels like i cant go anywhere without it :/ avoid twitter like a plague but i could go somewhere else and still face it. so its not about running away, its just about being aware when to stop. to make sure i dont keep feeding into that, and know the right time to just close the tab and check back in a few days.
not a huge deal ig but i have already seen a lot of misinformed comments about Hippi and whether shes a synth or whatever (purely on the english side of the community) obviously the west/english speaking side doesnt get much or any translated english news and it leaves ppl out a lot, but on demos/videos for hippi now (after seeing they clearly are just making her a a virtual icon for a human voice) people think 1st place is "lying" to people because they just think it is a synth and that clearly the company is trying to trick people.... or that no, maybe its synth v AI, or whatever other assumption. obviously this leads me to two conclusion 1) my god, people just dont try to research anything if its not in english?? theres never been a statement that hippi would be a synth v or whatever like its not hard to notice that not clarifying "shes not a synth" doesnt mean theyre lying, and 2) its incredibly easy for people to be confused due to the fact hippi is lumped with two other synths. while i wish ppl would you know... read a little, its no surprise people would assume she was one

in the end this maybe doesnt matter much because 1st place isnt exactly aiming for the western fans anyways, it seems clear japanese/eastern fans know what hippi is. but its still interesting to see how the confusion affects the interest of other areas of the fanbase

oh man, yeah, i get it. i sometimes make responses only in the hope that at least someone will see it and not necessarily the OP of the comment but ive gotten quite used to ignoring annoying and obnoxious people on the internet/deleting incredibly rude replies (on my own posts/etc) and making sure i dont continue a stupid chain and 'feed the troll' in a sense.... still, such a shame to sigh and see these kinds of comments because it would be nice if people would just think for a second!! maybe a minute. maybe five minutes lol.

and i agree! i mean i have no harsh feelings against any engine, i like seeing them all develop with no bias. but theres a huge incentive in western fans to pin down one engine as The Best and that everything else is a lost cause. for many vocaloid is a lost cause now. and cevio is too. and utau isnt comparable. or whatever nonsense theyre thinking. synth v is great but its not the One and Only True Engine that must be used by literally everyone in order for a voice to be "good".

theres toxicity in every angle of this (western context) fanbase which is, you guessed it, why i dont engage with the fanbase literally anywhere (except here to some degree because this community is so small, its easier to manage). i dont care what engine anyones rooting for, it seems like they all come down to the same core issue no matter what- being stuck in their own little bubble without any insight into what the bigger picture is
    morrysillusion

(on the ironic plus side, the conversation i had on YT that inspired this though, one person who attempted to claim some kinda synth v thing quick apologized and understood the facts i was giving them instead of fighting like so many others would.... so thats nice haha)

The mob mentality that occurs in fandoms can get annoying, but I've noticed that every rise is followed by a fall: the opinion of a group swings back and forth like a pendulum. Inevitably they'll come a point in future when the mob feels 'betrayed' by Synth V, and turns on it. It's become so predictable that I've started feeling sorry for anyone that's beloved in the moment: the higher they're raised up, the more dramatic their downfall. Right now, Synth V often feels like the only engine actively developing voicebanks aimed at the English speaking fandom, so it attracts a lot of sycophants. When people stop believing the future of vocal synths rests on Synth V I think they'll relax, and criticism won't be as taboo. :rikka_smile_lili: :koharurikka_smile_lili:
