i saw the new halloween movie tonight but didnt really like it, which is a shame because the first halloween is one of my favorite movies, and I thought the 2018 one was actually pretty good. I found this one kinda boring tbh :/ Here's my slightly spoilery review of the movie (though to be honest, if youve seen one halloween youve seen them all, so is it really spoilers?)
I definitely felt like the movie relied far too much on the shock value of blood and gore to make it "scary", but really it ended up just kind of making it cheesy. The original movie was able to make Michael intimidating, ominous and scary effortlessly. This new one lacks the atmosphere the first one has and tries to make up for it with over-the-top-gruesome deaths, but it ends up holding the film down.
Also, this movie kills off way too many characters. Like basically all of them. When you learn pretty quickly on to not get attached to any character because they won't last long, you end up having like no attachment to the movie and you just spend the entire runtime watching people you don't care about run around. It makes it so bland and predictable. I just knew exactly how the movie was going to end when it got to that scene where they were all surrounding him, and surprise surprise I was right. Yawn.
I know they'll make these movies forever cause it's a cashcow, but it's really hard to make a movie series about a superhuman who is invincible, immortal and has literally no weaknesses interesting. Every movie is "this time we're gonna kill Michael forever!" and they always fail. it's like gee, I wonder who's gonna win. is it going to be the mortal humans equipped with baseball bats, or the man with super strength who can not die. Hmm I wonder.
You'd think they'd start to throw in something to really spice the franchise up...I felt like they hinted at it a lot in this movie, I thought him taking off his mask was gonna be like this really grand reveal and we were going to like learn something new about him and he was going to become a more fleshed out, complex and interesting character, but alas. It ended up kinda being nothing. Even if fans would hate it cause it'd be a departure from the og, you'd think they'd do something to make the series fresh...add a character stronger than Michael (or at least as strong as him), reveal something new about him thats like a plot twist, actually have him die....If "Halloween Ends" is genuinely the last movie in the franchise (but i dont have high hopes) I hope we'll finally get an intriguing ending to the series. If it's legit just everyone thinking they killed Michael but then he gets back up and kills them all and then it zooms in on his mask while the theme song plays, I am never going to feel happiness ever again.
The soundtrack was immaculate though!
