  • Phew! Finished the live-action A Man and His Cat. Final verdict: WATCH IT. HOLY CRAP. Watch every episode except Episode 11 (unless you're just particularly fond of ugly-crying for thirty minutes straight); the ending of Episode 10 covers the first part of the conflict and the beginning of Episode 12 covers its conclusion, so you won't miss anything by skipping it (in fact I think the whole damn episode needs to be outlawed, but that's just me).

I digress! You can find it subbed in English here. Please. I'm begging you. Watch it.
Joy. V2's once again doing that fun little thing where it refuses to open. I figured it's just because I recently installed Yuki, so I re-installed Rin/Len Append so that the editor would be back up-to-date. Nope! Even that's not working.

I could really use the wisdom of the elders right about now. I'd like to use my girl. 😭

I mean, to be fair... my first solo usage of Rin was in a song about cats... and this song serves as the OP for a show about cats... so,

Hahaha I’m the same but with Tei. I’ve 20 gigs of UTAU downloaded but only ever use Tei because all the songs I want to cover are just perfect with her! XD

You have enough voicebanks to fill out the cast of a musical. You could potentially do something similar to OSTER project's "Alice in Musicland."

I'm surprised you don't cover some of halyosy's chorus songs when you have so many. Like "Pain Eraser" or "Blessing."
So maybe I SHOULDN'T be sending all of my mediocre works to my enthusiastically supportive father. I redid my only full-length Saki cover using her AI and admitted that I really wasn't planning on publishing it, I just wanted to tailor it to her AI for fun and wanted him to provide general tuning feedback. Since he knows nothing about vocal synthesis, he provides commentary from the sole perspective of a professional singer, and that helps ensure my works retain expression, so that was my goal here.

I just got off of the phone with him. He spent ten minutes dissecting every last little thing about it that he loved (he spent three minutes on the vibrato alone), and ended it with "So tell me again why you're not gonna publish it?"

So here I am, seriously considering recycling an old cover with marginal differences because my dad told me it's good.

I'm too much of a daddy's girl for my own good. I made him proud and now I've got too much confidence because of it. 😅
So I've spent the past three days straight crying over Fuyuki Kanda. Like, even though they changed his appearances some in the live-action adaptation, they captured his essence perfectly (helped by the side-by-sides of the manga vs. the drama that they show in the end credits of each episode), and his actor is phenomenal.

Aaaaaaaah I can't wait for the anime adaptation!!! I honestly hope they recast Kanda's actor, but the live-action drama is handled so well that I trust the team behind the anime no matter what.

A Man and His Cat (manga), the first few chapters: "Here's a lonely cat and a lonely man! We'll learn more about them as we go along, but first, let's watch them interact and have a good time together."

A Man and His Cat (live-action), the first six minutes: "Hey kids! This cat has accepted that he's going to die alone and nameless and this man just made a cup of coffee for his dead wife because he's desperately trying to hold onto her in any way that he can! Fun for the whole family!"

(Also, the live-action adaptation has Kanda working at a Yamaha music school, so naturally I will never criticize Yamaha again, because that's where my sweet boy works.)
Well, one plus side of YouTube ditching the dislike button: I can no longer see the two dislikes I got on this video, so I have the nerve to try sharing it again! I know it’s quite lackluster (hence, I’m assuming, the two dislikes I got within five views 😅), but I enjoy their tone enough that I still wanna show it off.

Kaito English is unironically amazing and you can’t convince me otherwise

Speaking of my dad: he’s the strongest reason I’m so into music. His side of the family has been highly musical since long before he was born even, and so from a young age I was surrounded by song. A common activity at family events is for someone to start up on a song (usually classic or southern gospel songs) and everyone else come in with various parts of the harmonies, which is where I got my ear for them.

While I’ve long-since given up on singing (my brother’s the one who got that talent), I would be inspired by my dad’s stories as a child of people whose ranges were near-superhuman. And then I’d try to prove that mine was shaping up to be as well. I’d sing a single note, not even really holding it out, starting as low as I could manage and going so high my throat wouldn’t even produce a sound, and ask him where that set my range. He’d just laugh and say that was impressive, but one’s true range shouldn’t be measured by the absolute highest and lowest notes one can hit, no matter how uncomfortable or unlikely, but rather where one’s voice can shine most consistently. “You can push yourself in both directions, I think,” he’d tell me, “but you can’t really call it a solid range unless it’s something you can achieve comfortably and repeatedly.”

And I still think about that every time I see an Utau whose creator markets their range as C1-B6. Just because it’s capable of producing noise at those notes doesn’t mean you should actually use them there, much less recommend users do just that. :clara_ani_lili:
My dad has always been my biggest supporter with regards to my vocalsynth hobby, but I’ve been scared to share my works with him for a long time now because I don’t want him thinking I’m wasting all of my time, especially now that I’m a retail-working dropout living on her own. Gotta keep up appearances, y’know?

We went to lunch together a few weeks ago, and he asked if I was still using my Vocaloids. I said yes, and I told him that I even reached 1.2k views with the very first Vocaloid he ever got me (which was Gakupo). He got excited and asked to listen to it, then he listened to a few more, and he told me to send my stuff over to him any time.

So last night I sent him a quick side-project that I don’t intent to publish (Rikka singing Henshoku so I could test how far I could push her tension and breathiness). As of now, he said he and my stepmom have listened to it several times (it’s only the opening chorus, so it’s quite short), and they’ve also sent it to my grandparents, my uncle, and my great-aunt.

Man, this is the ego boost I’ve been needing for so long. I know it’s probably just him trying to be supportive no matter my skill level, but it’s nice. 🥺
Oh boy, I'm finally gonna look into VoiceVox! It sounds really neat, and since it's free it wouldn't hurt anything--

Nope! She's the one outlier that isn't Ritsu or related to SSS. So I'm really looking forward to hearing her (especially since I think her design is really cute), I just wish she wasn't like the only one (that we know of so far) coming to VoiceVox that's like that orz

SSS charcaters and Ritsu however give VoiceVox good exposure so hopefully that means more companies and/or independent creators jumping on board 🥺
Me, a fool: "I don't really like getting invested into ongoing series, especially if they're emotional. I prefer the more mindless fluff! I don't like being made to feel really strong emotions and cry and stuff like that."

Also me, having just inhaled the first four volumes of A Man and His Cat, my face coated in tears and mucus: "Little by little, the sky grows light. I'm fine. I'm doing well. Don't worry, my love."
I tend to feel really guilty for the way I portray Kiyoteru in my writing; there's a fic I've been working on for nearly three years now that I keep getting too discouraged to pick back up because I keep thinking, "Everyone's gonna hate this. They're gonna read three paragraphs and say 'That's not Kiyoteru! You bastardized him!'".

But like,,, his Natural and Rock/teacher and rockstar characteristics being portrayed as two facets of his personality so wildly different that they almost qualify as alters isn't too outlandish, is it? I mean, one of his promo images (posted below) alludes to the concept, so at the very least I'm not just pulling this out of nowhere. I just worry I'm gonna be the one that executes the concept so poorly that it ends up grouped in with Kagamine twincest and hardcore guro as some of the worst fics the fandom has to offer, and my already lukewarm reception as a writer will go outright cold.

It's literally just smut, most people can overlook logical fallacies to read about two guys banging, why am I stressing so hard over this
Everyone, please join me in welcoming Kaai Yuki and her travel companion, Kaai Ushi! (I originally called her Cow Yuki, but let's be real, Kaai Ushi has a better ring to it.)

Yes I know my papasan is covered in cat hair, don't judge me.

Looking her over, I'm still incredibly shocked I was able to nab Yuki for under $40. I figured her box would be damaged or stuff would be missing and maybe the only sure thing would be the activation code, but nope! If not for just a tiny little dent on the corner of her cover box, you wouldn't think she's been off the shelf since her release twelve years ago. She's even got her original promo materials, including a giant sticker. She's in immaculate condition, second only to Meiko V1 for the most mint-condition secondhand 'loid I've ever bought.

    Welcome, both of you!
I have a hard time accepting that I can't learn everything all at once, and that sometimes I have to be patient. It's a major reason that I've never been much good at retaining foreign languages in spite of my adoration of and skill in mimicking them. A typical conversation I find myself having with my Slovake.eu printouts as of late:

    • "The rhythmic rule dictates where the ending letter of an adjective is elongated. Here's the details of that rule."
    • "Ah, that makes sense!"
    • "Of course, there's numerous exceptions to this rule. It's more of a point of reference than a strict rule, really."
    • "Understandable. Care to show me a few of those exceptions so I know what to look out for and the whole concept feels a little less overwhelming?"
    • "Now let's conjugate 'byť'!"
    • "SHOW ME THE EXCEPTIONS OR I'M GOING TO BURN YOU AND START OVER SOMEWHERE ELSE YOU DUMB BYČ"

Ah, God grant me patience. Slovak is such a beautiful language and I'm dating its most beautiful speaker and that alone is motivation enough, but one of these days I'll have to accept that not immediately knowing everything and being confused is just part of the process and no reason to get discouraged.

My method is to go over everything once very briefly, then go back to the beginning and go through it slowly and thoroughly. I always want to have a full overview of what lies ahead before I'm ready to get into the details.

Sometimes on long sections of non-fiction reading (book, article, whatever) I go through and read the first line of every paragraph before I read it all beginning to end. It gives me an idea of what I'm going to encounter as I read through it. It's rare that I find an author who can deliver the content in a linear fashion makes me feel informed of where we're going before we get there.

Other people get overwhelmed and skittish when given too much information at once. I say to give me all the information, I'm going to look over it, fully aware that I'm not going to remember or understand most of it. But it conditions my subconscious to be aware of what to look out for once I start learning it all. It's like seeing a map of a country before riding a tour bus through it. It gives you some context for what you're seeing, rather than just letting the tour guide drip-feed you bits of it as you go along.
Tsuina's actually not what I was expecting, not by a long shot. Demos and her previous products led me to believe she'd be another moe vocal, and I, lover and protector of all things moe (fight me, I don't care, moe voices are far more versatile than people give them credit for), was eager and looking forward to that. So I plugged her Standard Lite into a piece I had originally tried covering with Rikka, thinking her cuteness and clarity would give it that extra oomph that Rikka's softer, more realistically youthful tone couldn't.

But she's not "cute" in the way I had been expecting. Honestly, I think Rikka Standard has her beat out in the cuteness category. She's nice and clear, but oddly deep-toned, closer to Matcha than Azuki, so to speak.

And holy crap, I love her. I was already set on getting her Standard, but I can really see myself using her a lot, not as a standard, lovely moe vocal, but as a genuinely unique and beautiful voice in her own right.

Tsuina-chan I would die for you

I was testing her out too and she's such a interesting vocal like she's cute but not unrealistically high pitched and her pronunciation is unique and her ai tune offers a different idol singing style. I wonder how she'll sound will nemu or haiyi.

I'll be honest, I haven't been interested in Tsuina up until now, and even I'm surprised by how different she sounds. She sounds youthful, but not in the usual "moe" way that's been overdone in vocal synths at this point.
Ah, finally cleared out my SoundCloud! Now no one's unfortunate ears will have to stumble across my subpar works and suffer. Now to build up the nerve and clear out my YouTube... that one might take some time, heh.
For reasons I can't quite explain, I've recently been fascinated with the Mario series and have been inhaling as much info on it as possible (ironically it has nothing to do with the Chris Pratt movie coming up either. I genuinely have no clue what triggered this). It's led me to the discovery that Charles Martinet's first commercial stint voicing him was neither Super Mario 64, as is commonly claimed, nor Mario's Game Gallery as the latter fact is usually corrected to. It was a pinball machine from 1992, which used some of his voice recordings without his knowledge (possibly recordings from his very first audition tape, though I don't know if that's been confirmed or denied yet).

Honestly? I really, really like the way he sounds here. It's not as iconic, sure, but it's got the beginnings of the Mario voice we all know and love, and it's jovial without being outright falsetto. Like, I honestly kinda wish this was the direction he ended up sticking with, because it's just super, super pleasing to my ears.

I didn’t realize that a Mario pinball machine was Charles Martinet’s first role as Mario! I thought for the longest time that it was Game Gallery!

and i need to mention that there’s a video game I play that has Charles Martinet voicing the villain, and everytime i hear him, i think of mario lol

I was always under the impression that Charles Martinet's first role as Mario was doing voice work for interactive displays at video game conventions or something.

@parallax_fifths it was! The pinball machine was just the first commercial usage of that voice (in other words, the first time pre-recorded audio clips were used for a product rather than him being hooked up to a motion capture rig for a live audience).
A GIGANTIC thank you to the mod team for tackling the recent issues. If there's anything I can do as well to assist, please let me know! Otherwise, I'm going to do my best to help revert VVN to the comfortable, fun place I've always known it as.

Of course!! I've proposed a plan about a certain thread to the other mods that I'm waiting for feedback on, and I'm hoping it'll at least solve that big elephant in the room. The absolute last thing I want to do is make anyone feel silenced or oppressed about expressing their opinions, positive or negative, but at the very least my biggest concern is removing the content that is directly attacking other users or making them feel unsafe/unwelcome (and if we remove anything that anyone has an issue with we absolutely are open to discussing that and restoring content if we exercised our power too much) - beyond that, I hope we can keep making VVN a safe place for all users and prevent anything like that from happening again. :kiyoterunatural_lili:
