  • I'm posting here for the first time (not sure if anyone will read this, but I feel like this is a "safe space")
I'm recently seeing a lot of "pirating Vocaloid is okay under any and all circumstances is okay because bla bla bla" takes on Twitter, and to be honest, I don't know how to deal with this. I've muted the two accounts that were the worst, but I'm too afraid to write anything about it myself because as soon as you're against piracy in the slightest, you're apparently an awful classist that wants to shut poor people out.
There might be exceptions where piracy is somewhat acceptable, but those really are exceptions, not the rule, and saying everyone who is against piracy is always a classist is ridiculous. At least I think so.
Like... Did I get recommended some Tweets by the wrong people, or is this actually the consensus inside the community?
This whole thing bothers me a lot, and I legit don't know what to do, but being too afraid to speak your opinion is a terrible feeling.

edit: Thank you all for your comments and likes. I really appreciate it
Thinking of this topic as a bad thing that happens to come with something generally really amazing (vocal synths) is a good mindset

I don't think it's the consensus, I think it's half and half or people put arbitrary rules on it.
Ex: It's only OK to pirate if it's Yamaha because they're big, it's only OK to pirate if you're poor, it's only OK to pirate if you won't earn money from songs, it's only OK to pirate if the Vocaloid can't be purchased anymore, it's only OK to pirate to test the voice bank out, the list goes on.

I don't agree with it at all even if someone who is a buddy in the community insists it's okay. Vocal synths aren't a necessity, there are free options like Deepvocal, UTAU, lite Synth V, etc. People just want to justify satisfying their want or like getting revenge on a company they deem unworthy of a legitimate purchase. I think if I were forced to argue in favor of pirating (NOT for synths), then maybe I'd say poor + HAVE to have it and there's no alternative (ex: when Photoshop was the standard and there were no free alternatives about a decade ago).

I think some people just are too scared to say if they agree with it or not. Some people don't care if it's "wrong". Some only care if someone in particular does it (ex: popular producer who makes money off their stuff and steals other things like VSQXes or gets leaked voice banks).

This topic is one of the many "joys" (sarcasm) that comes with vocal synths, I guess. The community has good and bad things in it that are frustrating.

I think the worst case is when they insist it's only okay for Vocaloid because big evil Yamaha, forgetting it's mostly been bunch of small companies developing vocaloids ( and a lot vocaloids labeled as Yamahaloids were collaborations too, not just Yamaha's doing or Yamaha simply was the distributor ). Yamaha is big but the voice synth industry is small and barely profitable.

As someone with an interest in lost media and digital preservation, the only real exception to piracy I can think of is if a Vocaloid VB is completely discontinued (so no new digital and physical copies for sale), and you can only get secondhand physical copies for inflated prices, like the V1 Engloids and Piko. And even then, that situation is still morally dubious if physical copies can still be found online.

I'd ignore VocaTwitter - in general, Twitter is full of kids and overgrown manchildren pretending to be revolutionary communists, and their hot takes are laughable if you've ever spent more than five minutes in the real world.
