  • My uncle studied in Japan for a good long while. For most of my life, all that meant is that my grandparents had a lot of traditional Japanese artwork in their house, knew about old daytime TV shows, and were early Nintendo DS adopters. But somewhat recently, over family dinner, my uncle looked me dead in the eyes and asked if I had watched the new Evangelion movie and if I liked it. Well, I did, so that conversation went somewhat smoothly... but it took 100% of my effort not to burst out laughing. It really caught me off guard.

Now I'm trying to get him to understand my passion for Vocaloid music. My dad likes inabakumori and tsumiki, but my uncle is stubborn and probably only remembers the early songs from nicodou before the music scene had taken form.

I'm thinking, maybe working backwards by showing him ZUTOMAYO, Yorushika, and Kenshi Yonezu first could work.

WagakkiBand covers of Senbonzakura and Roki, then play the originals. MitchieM to show off how realistic the vocals can sound. Hachi is always good, especially since he's kind of well known as a singer now.

@mobius017 It is hard to imagine, isn't it! I was about to say he might not be quite old enough to be a grandparent, but then I realized that he is the oldest of my parents, aunts, and uncles... so that is a 100% true evaluation. Scary :arsloid_ani_lili: One time I was at a bookstore looking for the latest volume of yotsubato! with a friend and a much older gentleman asked us if we had heard of Speed Racer, and told us it was really good. Speed Racer and Voltron are the anime my dad knows about too, so there definitely are old anime fans among us, but it was never marketed as anime to them as kids, so alas.

@MillyAqualine To him, I think Haruhi Suzumiya might have special value as a kind of... evaluation/parody/self-acknowledgement of otaku culture, which might differentiate his appreciation from mine, which was of course the hare hare yukai memes and surrounding culture.

@Vector I didn't realize the bassist made Yoshiwara Lament! Cool. MitchieM is probably a no-go because of the poppy song composition. I think we're on the same page as far as working backwards though, that's what I mean by Kenshi Yonezu -> Hachi :) and so on with the composers.
The Zundamon and Zunko hoodies are so cute... I'm absurdly tempted to get the Zundamon style, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the neon green text stripes. Just... agggh, the ears! Cute!
I wonder if synths of the Project Sekai characters will ever become reality.

I've never ever had problems with Project Sekai fans (but I also think I inhabit different spaces online than a lot of people here). It's sad to hear there are pockets that aren't good.

And yes, it would be weird plot-wise, but I can't help but get a little giddy over the thought of being able to create new songs for the characters that already have compelling stories interwoven with vocal synthesis. I think there's potential for a "full circle" sentiment there that preserves the integrity of the original narrative.

    EDIT: wrt this
I don't really think there's that huge of an overlap between the Project Sekai fandom and vocal synth users
I'm not sure this is 100% true. Lots of Vocaloid producers post their Project Sekai scores on Twitter and get a lot of engagement from fans. A lot of small-time producers have talked about playing the game, too. The people that are primarily fans of "project sekai" might not also be music producers, but I think sentiment around the game from people that make music is generally positive from what I've seen-- probably because it portrays the experience of "being a vocaloid producer/user/member of the community" in such a varied and positive way

Ah, I was mainly talking about people who don't produce music (and also primarily the Western community, which trends younger). Project Sekai has a very large fan community - while many came for the virtual singers, a lot also are just here for the original characters, too. I don't really see those who are fans of just the latter entering the vocal synth community as a whole even if one of them were to become a synth, just from the patterns and behaviors I've observed from the sidelines. They could be casual listeners, of course, but many of them aren't involved or interested in the technical side of things at all.

That's fair. I do think Project Sekai is turning people into 'vocaloid fans', or at least legitimizing vocaloid music in the minds of some people that wouldn't be otherwise interested, though. Maybe expanding Project Sekai into the synthesis world is a way to introduce more non-synth fans to synthesis... and make them synth fans. :) It's def a pipe dream, but who knows.
    Current projects
    - Zutomayo dance video but with the faces of Yakuza/Ryu ga Gotoku 7 characters edited on top of it. Hard to explain but very funny in practice (kinda otoMAD/YTPMV style)
    - Impact Zundamon Nuigurumi (namigroove) bass cover/MV parody

I'm holding myself to completing these, so I'm posting this somewhere that way it feels like a promise
I just had a full on conversation with Mesuo Kenzaki (provider of new VOICEVOX lib with a scalpel for a head) and I’m laughing so hard it hurts. All of the fans have been so nice to me explaining things in English and simple Japanese. Dude himself is super chill. I’m a fan now
a slight change in bass plans-- a family member has a sterling music man (one of the simpler models) with a malfunctioning preamp. So I'm gonna get my interface and cables, but inherit the rickety old bass for free until it can't play anymore or I determine it can't be fixed. time to put the EE skills to practical use :kaito_move:
I'm finally getting my own bass pretty soon! I think I'm going to get a Yamaha AG03 too since I'll be in college with it anyway and wouldn't really benefit from an amp. Been practicing playing and singing a lot, I hope I can share the things I make someday!

I don't know what's your setup look like, and what you already have, but general rule is to maximize cost effective and it's depend on what your expect from that unit.
Fortunately, in these day almost all audio interface have quite similar performance and build quality, so it's a good choice to pick audio interface base on bundle.

You may pick Presonus Studio 24c if you don't have any software such as DAW yet, their bundle included studio one artist 5 which is around 100$ USD.
It's have MIDI In-Out too, if you have midi keyboard or hardware synths.

Audient id4, is something different, they had excellent headphone output it can drive 250ohm headphone easily, and pristine sound mic pre, i use it to record others UTAU with SM7B mic, although it don't have MIDI IO but if you never use it then I highly recommend this unit.

Good to know. I do have a DAW (FL) and don't have any MIDI interfaces, but I'm not opposed to the idea of expandability in that area. I'll keep an eye out!

FYI: MIDI Keyboards these day don't need an MIDI I/O anymore, USB is now become a standard, If you don't have a plan to use old midi keyboard or old equipment (e.g sound module, old keyboard synthesizer) that require midi input, you're good!

realizing I missed the opportunity to draw KAFU, SEVEN (NEUTRINO), and myself hanging out for birthday stuff today. next year, LOL
Pinocchio-P's last song was "Magical Girl and Chocolate", so I wonder if "Reincarnation Apple" is also a response to a past song (Apple Dot Com)?
I could totally see this being the case if future songs follow a similar pattern.|
I really like the new song, though. You can't please everyone, no matter how many times you reach new heights and reinvent yourself as an artist.
The most amazing thing to me is how Zundamon has become, like, basically the most popular new singing synth (other than KAFU of course) despite not having a singing VB at all.
Does anyone know what NB means on bilibili? I've started using the site to do outreach with Chinese participants of the robotics competition I'm part of and am not acquainted with the slang that wasn't imported from nicodou yet.
I really like the (finalized?) new designs for the vsingers. I think it's great they took their time and gave it many passes.
irucaice is performing at cho kaigi right now!! Get on the stream!! It made me so happy to see her on stage in front of the crowd!

How can you say vocaloid is dead, how can you say the beginner producer spirit is dead when stuff like THIS IS HAPPENING. aaahhh vocaloid makes me so happy. I love it from the bottom of my heart.
