  • Yeesh. At the end of June I got herded onto an EMT and rushed to the nearest hospital. Just got the bill today: $520, $450 for stepping foot in the vehicle and $35 for every mile they had to drive.

Hmm... tuning in CeVIO AI is taking a surprising amount of getting used to. It's difficult to get exactly the results I want; part of that is that, even with the old Timing parameter activated, there's no way to smooth the transitions between vowels like there was in CCS. I'm half-contemplating making my first CAI cover one with lots and lots of harsh vocals, because at least that hack still works.

It's odd. In principle it's not much different from, say, Ace, but I'm having a much, much harder time with it. Anyone have any tips for a lowly Vocaloid main?

While I'm being a walking unpaid advertisement for Mondly, please enjoy this photoset of me slowly but surely testing out my new vocabulary from my Mondly lessons!

Psst! Would anyone like a subscription to Mondly? It’s a spectacular language-learning app, and so far the only one I’ve been able to stick with consistently and actually LEARN stuff. And since I’m subscribed to the full plan, I can add on accounts hella cheap, so if anyone’s looking to learn one of the 41 languages they offer, hit me up!
I'm an excited peach! There's a Comic Con coming up in September in the state capitol, and my Print Manager invited me to go with her and her family. Tom Kenny’s gonna be there! Josh Grelle is gonna be there! The guy who voices Lest in the English dub of RF4 is gonna be there! And since the capitol is one of like two interesting places in Arkansas, we’ll get to explore and do lots of cool, fun things! It’s just the kind of outing I need.

I’m preeeeeeeetty sure I’m gonna be cosplaying as Pete, because 1.) I’m predictable and 2.) it’s an easy cosplay to put together in a short time frame, since the components are simple and I’ve already got short brown hair and 3.) I can be corny and give Patuk a blue feather to hold her over until I can get her a proper ring, but y’all didn’t hear that from me 🤐. I’m gonna look like such a dork but I’m gonna be so happy I won’t care, I’m calling it now!

Notorious Fashion Disaster Gumi is confirmed for AI Voice, an announcement that comes paired with the reveal of the single most questionably-designed character in the history of vocalsynthesis for the same engine. What kind of an omen is this?
Not me with 20k WIPs wanting to cover a song written in archaic Estonian
(The band has made thorough attempts to wipe it from the internet unless you pay for it, but it's called Eha by Metsatöll. I'd likely need to do some heavy key-switching to be able to cover it in the first place...)
In college, I decided I wanted to get my Master's degree in a Study Abroad program and become a librarian, so in my fantastical digging I found a program in Estonia. I'd never even heard of Estonia, but I fell in love with the language, so I became determined to learn it and move there after getting my Bachelor's! That, of course, never happened, but this was in the middle of a period of extreme turmoil in my life, so I spent several months throwing myself into my studies as a form of escapism.

Because of that, I ended up actually becoming conversational in Estonian by the time my life became stable enough to come back to reality full-time. Haven't retained much of it, but I'll always love it, because it really is a beautiful language.

I taught myself via this interactive online video course hosted by an Estonian woman, and I developed the biggest crush on her. Even if I didn't feel like learning or practicing, I'd do it anyway just to see her (the videos were all pre-recorded, mind you, there was no direct interaction). In hindsight it's definitely cringe, but hey, it brought me joy during a hard time and gave me appreciation for a language and culture I once knew nothing of, so no harm done!

When recounting this to Patuk and showing her the videos, I came to the realization that the host looks eerily similar to her... like, Patuk if she had a bowl cut and a Finnic accent rather than a Slavic one. That marks the second time I've realized in hindsight that my girlfriend bears a striking resemblance to a person/character I crushed on in my past. I have a type I guess 😅

Y’know what I want to start doing again? Homemade box art.

(1/3) It was brought up in the UO thread, but to keep from cluttering it, I wanna say my peace here!

I’ve mentioned that I’ve had deeply conflicting feelings towards SynthV in the past months, and the aforementioned UO conversation helped me pinpoint the source of those feelings. It’s not the software itself by any means. Its quality has gone steadily downhill and its output suffers sameiness, which I’m sad about, but that doesn’t make me dislike it. Ace is glitchy as hell, Vocaloid gives me the odd fit, but I don’t love them any less for it.

No, my hard feelings toward SynthV aren’t because of any kind of performance issues. It’s the pseudo-religion that’s been built around it.

You're definitely not the only person to feel that way. I wasn't entirely sure what you meant when you've mentioned "forced positivity" recently; in this instance, I totally get it.

I've purchased Synth V. I'm sure there's a lot for me to learn with the more advanced things it can do. I wouldn't hesitate to say it's good software in that it works reasonably well for me, is intuitive, and it can sing quite well with minimal help from me. At the same time, I've encountered my share of crashes.

For a long time, I held off on buying the software, and a big reason for that was the attitude that often surrounded it. There was so much of going around touting it as the best vocal synth software ever, and all other offerings were basically crap that it would grind underfoot and eat for breakfast.

There's nothing wrong with people being fans of a particular software and sharing their positive feelings about it--that's what the fandom is about, and that's what we do here. But it's possible to do that without telling people who prefer something else, directly or indirectly, that yours is the best and theirs suck.

I'm actually really sad that that was at least one of the things that caused you so much difficulty. That's just not right.

You worded it perfectly! I’ve said before in private that a lot of the love for SynthV manifests as hatred for anything that isn’t SynthV more so than just love in and of itself. I’ve gotten shut down before when trying to voice that opinion; things look like they’ve calmed down a lot in the time I’ve been gone, but it’s still ongoing, and with SynthV being acceptable to criticize right now I wanted to say it in hopes that maybe this time, I could really get it off my chest without being booed off the metaphorical stage.

And thank you for your sympathy. It honestly means a lot to me. It was a really bitter thing for me; something that I once loved, that once brought me so much joy, became the very thing that drove me to nearly abandon this entire hobby, and for what? A pissing contest over which synth is the best? Does it matter which is the best? I just wish the state of the fandom was such that people can acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of all engines while still embracing them all as a collective whole. Maybe that’s asking a bit much, but it’s nice to imagine.

I don't know if it's a good thing that I am not the only one to feel it in the air

Like, don't get me wrong, it's a nice synth, I like playing with the trails-lite versions (And Saki is my absolute queen and I'm truly happy to see after these years Maki finally has a voice)

But lately there were some very bad vibes (that occurred a while ago but only on one person) and sadly it seems they're gulping up the whole software (like the ANRI situation with toxic behaviours, the fact Maki's VA was changed without any notice to her former voice actress, Eleanor boxes, the vagueness about announced vocals, the Virvox situation, etc)and seeing people who were heavy fans of the program suddenly starting to walk away from it since the strange update problems, well, it seems to be a bit disappointing after the cool start it got

And while it seems now more people tend to tone down the things said here and there, there's still this perception of synthV as the ultimate synth, ditching hard UTAU, DeepVocal and Vocaloid, while praising it without caring about some issues both in and outside of the program in itself
The bad news: my internet is spotty, so working in Ace is hit-or-miss right now. Not much is getting done on this cover. I've been able to polish the first half to a shine, but I've hardly made a dent in the second half because it keeps timing out when I try making more than one or two changes in rapid succession. Until I can get my internet fixed up, have a portion of the first half!

The good news: I'm working on a longer and more lighthearted Lucas/Ares fic shamelessly plugs my first one, and it's been in limbo for a long time because I just couldn't find a single element to tie all of the otherwise marginally connected scenes together. I found it early this morning, and rewrites are already underway! I feel it already flows a lot better, and my hope is that I have it finished within the next week or two.

I'm especially happy because just a few days ago, someone on Reddit found a comment I made regarding my first fic and eagerly asked me to link it to them... and were very obviously disgruntled when I did, because they'd already read it and had been hoping for something else. I'm getting more ASAP I swear 😭

I did one of these shortly after the game came out and I wanted to redo it now that I've spent more time with each of the characters! For how much r/runefactory bitches about "Weeeehhhhhhh, but they're not the RF4 cast, so they suck," this is honestly my favorite cast out of all seven games. I just... I dunno. I genuinely love all of them, and the degrees of separation between each tier really aren't steep at all (except for St. Eliza, who can go choke on an entire bag of dicks).

and as I explained to Patuk, for how little fanart there is of them, almost all of them align with my personal headcanons of Lucas being super PDA-happy and Ares getting flustered by like,,,everything he does, it just makes my heart so happy

I went back and ran a few tests, and surprisingly, 1.7.0 even messed up Standard banks. It’s not to the extent it’s screwed over AI banks, but there’s definitely problems: their voices are grainier and they suffer frequent pops and clicks during playback. Since I mostly use Standard banks anyway, I’m back on 1.5.0.

Ah, there’s a song with Haiyi I’ve been wanting to finish something fierce! All I really need to do is knock out the last half and I think that would do it~

Hm. I seem to have overlooked one major setback: the instrumental is only available on pan.baidu, and while I had it downloaded at one point, I seem to have deleted it, and all of my alternate ways of accessing Baidu are no longer working. Shit.

Ah well, it's a catchy song but maybe a little simplistic for her. I'll find something for her!
My grandparents must be feeling another shortage coming up, because they inexplicably brought me a 90-pack of toilet paper the other day and frankly I'm still kinda baffled. I didn't even realize anyone sold 90-packs of toilet paper. I mean, I imagine it's great for large families and organizations and such, but for a woman living alone in a single-bedroom apartment...? I don't even have anywhere I can really put it, so it's just kinda sitting in my living room, ominously. Watching. Waiting.

Which is to say, if anyone in the continental US needs any toilet paper, hit me up, because I don't think I go through that many rolls in a year.
Okay, full disclosure: I haven’t had this much fun utilizing parameters since Gen1 SynthV when the Tension parameter actually made significant impact. I think that’s another thing I prefer about Ace over SVS. AI SVS banks tend to fall into sameyness no matter how well or how extensively you tune them, because they were released with realism in mind as opposed to character, while Ace hits that sweet spot between realism and character, leaving greater room for stylisms that I can’t achieve in SVS.

I promise I’m not trying to be all “SYNTHV BAD, ALL HAIL ACE MASTER RACE,” I’m just sincerely enjoying myself. Thanks to my adjusted medications and ongoing therapy I’m finally feeling passion again, and Ace is giving me an outlet to express it in ways no other AI synth has before. Aaaaaaaah I’m having fun!!
    Rylitah

I haven't gotten the chance to mess around with Ace myself, but the results I've heard from it are very stunning! I kind of wondered if it would be possible to sound realistic while also having the option to kind of just go crazy with it and like... you kinda can do that in Synth V but there's really only so much you can do? I'll definitely have to try Ace out myself sometime!
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
Oh yeah! I’m going absolutely wild with a cover right now, to the point where I’m not sure if it adds emotional weight or just makes the whole thing goofy, but you can definitely push Ace vocals more than you can SVS vocals. It is more Character Vocal-driven, and I know that’s put a few people off, but I love the added variety. The interface is still in Chinese, but there’s a few quick guides to it, and once you commit the parameter buttons to muscle memory then it’s smooth sailing (though English and Japanese interfaces are in the works, last I checked)!
I took advantage of DLSite's big summer sale and checked a particular voice off of mine and Patuk's checklist: Sasara AI (+ the Song Editor)! With Tsudumi being announced, it seemed like a good time. I've never been a fan of CeVIO AI's pitch rendering, but with more vocals coming out that I either like or am interested in, I'd like to learn to work with it, so I'm excited!
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
I already am! Thankfully it seems I won't have much to learn; it's nigh-identical to VoiSona, which I've been spending a lot of time in, and bears strong resemblance to the original CeVIO. I miss the way Timing worked in the OG CeVIO, because it made transitions between vowels a lot smoother, but honestly it sounds pretty good, better than I remember it sounding anyway.
