Thank you! I don't quite understand [p\ M] , though. Would you use [p] as sort of a lead-in to a long [M]?
So far, I've been using a very short (like 1/64) [h u:] note 1 semitone lower than I really want to be, followed by a long [m], at my intended pitch with heavy vibrato. So each pair of notes make up one hummed note that sounds basically like "hmmm." I can't remember ATM if I did anything with the attack/velocity of the notes, though I know I tried it. Sometimes the h or m come across more strongly than I'd like as I slur from one hummed note to the next, though.
I haven't tested it, but I was thinking "N" with some excessive BRE to give it that kind of metallic roboty sound people often complain about BRE adding. It would add some resonance, and the metallicness could probably be ironed out with EQ.
