(1/3 wow what) I understand where you're coming from. I've seen your thoughts echoed by quite a few people recently. I've been thinking about this a lot so I wanna verbalize my thoughts too...

At a certain point, I feel like I also thought that "focus on character" was something that detracted from the scene, but I've revised my thoughts on that in recent years. I think in earlier times for this community, the problem with "character focus" is that fans weren't cognizant of synths being instruments and would levy their love onto Hatsune Miku, for instance, or "Hatsune Miku's songs" instead of the people that made them.

But, and it might just be me, I haven't seen signs of this repeating itself at all since the popularity spike of AI synths in music. I think the "producer focus" is as high as it's ever been right now.

The repeating pattern I have noticed is that there's been an increase in "character-focused" songs with memey/headcannoney/meta works that self-reference the synth. But I've seen many people in the community say they missed that kind of early, silly spirit, and I also think that kind of lightheartedness lowers the perceived barrier to entry for people just starting to get interested in making music. When all we have is very serious artistic works, it can be easy to say, "I'm not sure if I'm talented enough/have the skill to make something that...", but when we also have people excited about the 'simpler' stuff, I feel like you can say "I can make something fun/experimental too!" and that might lead you down the path to creating new groundbreaking music for the scene like the stuff we really cherish.
