  • I realize this has nothing to do with vocal synth stuff, but I finally finished the second movement to my double bass concerto:

The other two movements are still awaiting final revisions, as well a cadenzas.

Writing a concerto for double bass was tricky not only because it's a low-pitched instrument, but also because it doesn't have a lot of overtones. This means it's easily drowned out by other instruments, which makes orchestration an interesting challenge.

As for vocal synth stuff, I have three songs at various stages of completion. One should be done soon...
Holy coolness, Batman! I was having difficulty in getting the snare to cut through my mix. So I decided to try TDR Nova's sidechain feature and use the snare track to trigger a narrow dynamic EQ cut in the guitars at 217 HZ (the snare's main attack area). Wow, It worked wonderfully!

Now to use the same technique to make the bass guitar and kick drum play nicely together.

I've tried sidechain compression in the past for similar reasons, but always felt it was too intrusive. However, sidechained dynamic EQ is awesome!
Yay! I finally finished my last paper for the school year—21 pages of pure fun!

Honestly, this particular paper really was fun: analysis of six first-movements from six different symphonies by Carl Friedrich Abel. Hopefully the knowledge gained will improve my (non-voice synth) compositions.
I challenge anyone to make a cover of this performance:

(The YouTube comments made me chuckle, but the video itself gave me hiccups.)
Hmm... Still needs work. (And lyrics, of course.) Not happy about the clean guitar. And something about the mix sounds kinda cheap. At least Renri sounds fine. (Until lyrics are added and then I've got bazillions of plosives and sibilants to tame.)

you're way too hard on yourself!!! I think it sounds fine as is (ofc other than lyrics needed). did you make this by scratch? music making is something i know virtually nothing about but from a listener's point of view it sounded good. I thought the refrain was especially cool. definitely continue this!!

and i will ALWAYS approve of Renri.
Ugh. I just tried layering the "N" and "C" Yamine Renri sub-libraries in SynthV and the result was phasey as phuck. Damn.

Obviously a synthesis issue because Genbu also has his phasers set on stun.
I had to make a video presentation for school this weekend. To level out my voice, I tried using the free TDR Kotelnikov compressor, and it worked fantastically. So if anybody else on this site is making a video presentation, give Kotelnikov a go! (To keep things easy, I used the "warm vocal" preset.)
Classes cancelled due to COVID-19, but homework continues on as usual. (The cancellation might only be for today because the Provincial Government's recommendation is to avoid gatherings of 250+ people, and all my classes are tiny graduate seminars. Monday might be business as usual.)
Here is the intro for a Yamine Renri WIP song. Mix levels, EQ, and effects are all preliminary, except the voice where I barely even tried. There's no point in doing vocal processing until I have actual lyrics to enter, because plosives and other nasties can really affect what sort of plugins and/or settings are needed.

This won't be finished for at least a month (or more) because I have papers to write. All I can get done is an hour here and an hour there.
It's official: Reaper is far easier to use than FL Studio.

I've only been using Reaper for a couple of days and I already feel more comfortable with it than FL Studio, which I've used for several years.

It's always so good to find a program you just click with! As a by-note: whenever I use Reaper, I have a hard time getting the audio to actually play back through my headphones. Have you had that issue?

Yeah, when I first imported a .mid file, no sound came through my headset. But that's because Reaper does not automatically assign an instrument to a MIDI track. Just click "FX" on the track's mixer and then add your favourite VSTi. If that doesn't work, then maybe your preferences need checking. Or both. Or maybe Reaper doesn't like you, in which case I can't be of help.

On a slight tangent, one common online opinion is that FL Studio has a far better piano roll editor than Reaper. However, those comments are out of date, as the piano roll editor in Reaper 6 is excellent—I shake my fist at it far less than its FL Studio counterpart.
The guy from REAPER Mania sounds like someone doing an impression of Christoper Walken.
Yeah, I'm leaving FL Studio behind and moving to Reaper. (Although I'll keep FL Studio around for its ZGameEditor Visualizer video-making tool.)
Has anyone here ever used Gullfoss EQ?

I haven't, but I've been curious what it would sound like on a Vocaloid. The examples on their website seem pretty subtle but maybe I don't know exactly what to listen for. Let me know if you try it out.
I don't know the details, but several students and professors from my University were killed in the Ukraine Flight 752 incident. Not cool.
I'm going to be posting my Ignite Amps tutorial piece by piece. Hopefully I should get it all done tonight so I can get back to making music ASAP.
