  • I changed up my UTAU ui!! got sick of my classic greyscale/purple scheme and decided to go for a simple bold red look. it's too bad the plugin doesn't let you change the pitchbends, because the default red/blue utau uses looks kinda gross along darker tones. so i had no choice but to submit and use a lighter theme /sigh

and here i am tuning with kohaku merry aka my emotional support utau
using teto's english CVVC alongside her VCV to fix pronunciation issues works SOOO WELL?!!? also i forgot how much i love how she sounds when she sings deeply,,

thats what i do too cvbhnjk and use her eng phonemes for different tone in jp songs cuz a lot of her samples can pass for jp ones vbhnjmk,l

it's a bit embarrassing but at the same time validating that i can confidently navigate niconico's mobile app (which is completely in japanese) almost entirely without even knowing how to pronounce the majority of things i'm clicking lmaofjsjfnxnkg
Okay so after too many attempts trying to upload to nnd i somehow got my tuning video to upload??!?!!! you have no idea how relieved and honestly shocked i am that the video didn't crash mid upload!! all the niconico dwellers can witness and judge my messy tuning now. anyways i'm ECSTATIC

Sooooo i totally just recorded and finished editing my first everrrr UTAU tuning video UNDER AN HOUR. it was very impulsive :meiko_ani_lili:

now i might ummm... aha..... impulsively upload my tuning for the entire niconico world to see 😳 kinda nervous

granted that i can actually upload successfully this time unlike that tei anniversary mess
uhhh so i need opinions on how i mixed this wip, rock is really hard for me to mix vocals with for some reason because i'm always battling between making them not too overpowering but still "pop" and don't sound muddy with the inst. also ruko is a bit of a b^tch to mix when they sPPPiT their CConsoNatTTs like thiS so i've kind of brought this on myself :,,) specifically the chorus is the part where i had the most trouble.

might not be on long enough to read any replies 2nite considering it's almost midnight and i'm basic and have a normal sleep schedule <3

Wow, it sounds really good to me though! If I may offer my own two cents from my quick listen. Try two things and see if it helps from a mixing standpoint:

    1. Scoop a little around the 750 hz - 1khz on the vocals.
    2. Bring out some top end on the vocals with maybe a hi-shelf EQ

You mentioned having a problem balancing the vocals so as to not be too overpowering, but still "present", and I think this may help. Doing these changes might affect the perception of the presence area (2-4k), and you might have to joggle the volume level a bit, but I hope it helps. Sometimes its hard to gauge whether to just use EQ, or mixture of changing the level and EQ. I tend to do both at the same time to find the sweet spot.

I've only every used Gumi to this point, but based on my own mixing experience with her and listening to many different vocaloid songs: Many mixes have a lot of upper mid-range in the vocals and not much in the presence area (2-4k), or high-end. Also a lot of lo-mids sometimes, which begins to sound muddy.

When I mix Gumi, I almost end up with a 45 degree angle on my EQ spanning the spectrum, lowering the lo-mids, some mids, and boosting the presence and hi-end. A lot of words can be erratic with the frequency response as well, and I have to use multi-band compression and a couple more compressors to get her to sit right. Your compression sounds nice and even, though.

Also, this may be a taste thing, but I like to set the vocals to sit right in the mix with everything else in a rock context, and not too much at the forefront like a pop mix. That way the guitars and drums have more power (maybe that's just me, though).

Also, are you using one stereo file for the instruments? Or do you have access to the individual instrument tracks? All of that would affect the approach to the vocals, of course, and my advice has been predicated on having one stereo instrumental backing track and the vocal track. Anyway, enough of my ramblings  . Thanks for sharing! I like to delve into this stuff.

wow thank you both for all this effort...!!! ♡.♡

@parallax_fifths actually i used a bit of both de-essing and automating for consonants (because i was afraid of using the de-esser too much lmao). also thx for the channel reccomendation, i think i might have come across one of his videos before in my mixing depths of despair haha. his videos look promising!!

@AALLF ty for the EQ tips!! sometimes i'm really bad at determining what a vocal needs done to it so hopefully as I get more into mixing i'll learn how to fix my issues lol. (plus i was mixing this at 11pm at night @_@) i did breifly try EQing the high end up a bit but thought it started to sound gross, i think i'll try going more hi-mid like you said.

and sadly i only have a single instramental wav as my bg (but maybe that's a good thing because having a million instruments lined up in my daw would stress me tf out djfkfjd i'm good with just mixing my vocals and letting the inst do it's own thing :mirai_ani_lili: )

I'm with you on that! I'd much rather work with one stereo mix-down than individual stems if I was working on someone else's music (mastering engineers probably have an easy job :giggle:).

I went the other way in the beginning, obsessing over mixing, producing and recording, and sticking to the basic stuff with GUMI and Vocaloid. Now that my album's done, I can finally start digging into all of those UTAU resources you gave me, and everything else Vocaloid.

I think Ruko make would sound great singing this, but I see you say you wanna branch out from Merry and Ruko so what about… Matsudappoiyo? I have feeling he might sound good singing the song.

oh right, i sometimes forget matsudappoiyo exists LMAO and got a really nice new voicebank for his anniv... however I decided on using a guy called tsukishiro hakupo who i used to be a fan of back in the day but never used. i think he's still fairly popular??

but um, his vb is NOT the same quality as i remember so maybe it's time to give matsu his time to shine
UTAU海外組 -- does this mean "overseas UTAU user" or an overseas made UTAU?

i finally made a pixiv account and am now trying to understand the tag language over there when my Japanese is terrible :)))

The article is written in a slightly strange way, but that tag refers to UTAU voice banks made by foreigners. I would translate "UTAU kaigai gumi" as "Foreign UTAU Brigade". The article further explains that just like VOCALOID, there are overseas UTAU fans who mainly make their banks to include 50ish sounds and be in romaji. The article links to a list of voice banks included in the brigade split with guys on the left, girls in the middle, genderless on the right: UTAU海外組とは (ウタウカイガイグミとは) [単語記事] - ニコニコ大百科

thank you both!!!!! that makes sense now.
has anyone else had an issue in niconico where when you try to upload a video, the upload screen just goes blank after awhile...? i've tried multiple browsers and it still happens. my isp is fixed now so that shouldn't be the issue like before. it feels like all odds are against me from sharing my tei project fghdfjhd

I've definitely had uploads fail partway through, but I can't remember if the screen went blank or what. But it's a pain in the butt because Nico uploading is slow.

I also know that the site does have some sort of warning about high-traffic affecting uploads. Perhaps this is what you're experiencing...?
    Krin
    Krin
i don't think it's warning, the site just goes completely blank white after a minute of uploading. but i've found a workaround!!! i'm currently 25% of the way uploaded from the niconico mibile app on my phone lmao

so niconico uplaods are always slow then? because usually my upload speed isn't too bad.

edit: phone upload keeps stopping too. so frustrating.

Nico is always slow for me. What takes minutes to upload to YouTube takes at least two hours to upload to Nico. I image Nico is faster when uploading from within Japan, because Nico probably only has servers in Japan, unlike YouTube which has servers all over the globe.
isn't it cool how teto is just so world famous that bandai namco added her to soulcalibur

yes! I used to main Amy when I had SC4!! she's pretty frail but her combos are dangerous - especially with how fast she is - which makes her tough for beginners, though I found her relatively easy to grasp. lemme shut up before I become a full-blown SC stan again and talk forever KDJFKSF ☠

@UMA.55 (inactive) i've seen some gameplay videos of her and she does look pretty fun honestly. i pulled out my dusty dreamcast a few days ago and have been playing soulcalibur a ton lately... now i'm almost tempted to buy the sixth 👀

edit: i'm just happy they kept most of the original characters, it's fun to see how they've evolved in 10 years
one thing that sucks now that it's summer is that it's no longer socially acceptable to still dress like its midwinter. i miss wearing chunky sweaters and plaid pants and tall boots. every year!! this is a struggle!!!!!

i finally """"finished"""" the odds&ends cover i was working on last week. this week is exam week and since i'm too mentally burnt out to tune anymore, i decided to call it "short ver." bcos it's only through the first chorus, and so it doesn't make me look like a lazy bish x

oh man i am so excited for summer break!!! sounds like a good time to finish my endless pile of WIPs

    I have another mixing input request! apologies if these are getting annoying ;;
i mixed the same 3 parts of OODS&ENDS 3 times, each time with slightly different EQ/compression etc. To my corrupt bad mixing ears, #1 probably sounds best but i'm constantly going back n forth between all 3. it's always nice to have a second set of ears to hear what i could be missing and i do appreciate everyone who's given me input in previous posts!!

    if nothing's really sticking out then just try telling me which one speaks to you the most lol^^;
