  • Does anyone know a good music theory tutorial for digital musicians? Every time I try to search for one, it goes into music notation and notes, when I do not need to know what each note represents when working in Studio One or vocal synth engines.(ex. All I need is G4, F#3, etc)
Though I would like to learn them someday, right now I would like to focus on making music in DAWs.

You might want to have a look at the sources from the General Music Theory resource and see if any of them look like you'd like them. Specifically, I'd recommend the book Music Theory for Computer Musicians and Musictheory.net; although the latter does use/teach notation, it's done a better job than other resources I've used a few times.

For what it's worth, don't be too afraid of learning notation. I'm not an expert by any means, but I think it looks more complicated than it is, and even just memorizing what the handful of different notes mean can be really useful.

Thank you for these links :yukari_onn_lili:I am not too afraid of it, I just do not have the time currently. I want to learn it someday so I can play an instrument.
I know I just said I am not very interesting in CeVIO anymore, but it was mentioned in the Kafu thread and I did not want to interrupt the thread with a most likely silly question, but,
what is the difference between CeVIO AI and CeVIO Pro? I thought AI was CeVIO's upgrade, like SynthV to SynthV Studio.

I suppose so:lumi_lili: They do not require as much effort as sample based synths since the AI does the work, so I can see why many music creators would prefer to use them over sample based so that way they can focus on the instruments instead.

I'm curious whether it's just a fad or if it will stay, I think that how impersonal the process is it could be it's downfall too.

That is a good point. Some creators may wish to have more control over the vocals, so they may prefer sample-based synth instead. You will also get more worth from your purchase since a sample-based synth has more possibility(Now that I think about it, how much do they plan to charge with AI banks?). It could definitely end up as a fad like VR did if the developers of AI synths are not careful.

I feel like every time I get excited for something CeVIO-related, I end up being disappointed. Part of me wonders if I should stop getting my hopes up and just wait till ONE comes up and then follow CeVIO. But we know nothing of what is happening with ONE or IA, so who knows. This applies to other voicebanks as well that we have not heard of much.
Right now, CeVIO to me feels like a console launching with little to no games, not even a big-hit that everyone has been waiting for, like the Switch with Breath of the Wild, so why get excited for something that is not interesting me?
(Though in CeVIO's case, at least it is available to pre-order, unlike the PS5:clara_ani_lili:)
I think I will still follow Kafu's development, but as for anything else CeVIO, I am not sure. I usually love following vocal synth development too, so I am not sure what it going on with me:kaito_lili:
On a much happier note, SeeU arrived yesterday :seeu_lili: I have not opened her yet since I am in the midst of moving, so I might lose all the bonus items she came with in the move, and I have covers with other Vocaloids that I should finish or start working on before I install another Vocaloid. But part of me still wants to open her.
As someone who loves all the animated Digimon animes and films, including Tri, I have to say...Last Evolution is extremely disappointing and almost insulting to the fans at some points. Without saying spoilers, I can describe it as the kind of film you love when you first watch it, but the more you think about it, the more you realize it's plot and it's theme made no sense whatsoever and contradict many things prior introduced in the series. It is also a very poor conclusion to the series overall, and does not even bother to tie up the loose ends. Tri was much more satisfying, even though I felt it had a somewhat rushed ending.
They really thought the message "The things you loved as a child will go away because you are a adult now and your potential is gone and there is no way you can bring them and your potential back so just grow up already" would work in a film that was made for nostalgia purposes and heavily relies on nostalgic songs? And after it is released you announce a reboot of the series? Not to mention that is just a poor message overall since being an adult means you have more potential and growth because now more things are accessible to you that weren't before when you were a child, like getting a job, or driving, etc. and to make butterflies a symbol of the villain when butterflies were always a good thing in the series, and were the namesake of the very first opening? I thought Toei was better then this. :kaito_lili:

My copy of Last Evolution arrived. I have been very busy lately, but I think tomorrow I will take time out of my schedule to see it. Though the description on the back is already making me sad:kaito_lili:I have a feeling it will be sadder then Confession.
Does anyone have Utau recommendations? I am only familiar with the Vipperloids, Mawarine Shuu, Matsudappoiyo, and Sai and Sayu Yurika.
Edit: I also know Amane Luna.
I wanted to install Project Sekai today, but it is not compatible with my phone. I do not think I will need to upgrade my phone anytime soon either. I was hoping Project Sekai could be my main game too, as none of the other games I have seen interest me.

I glad to hear I am not the only one struggling then. All I have to play is Miku Tap, which is not very fun after a while. I always end up stuck near Stage 900.
Going to try using the V5 Editor as a VST today. I hope it will help me get better at making covers and timing.
Would it be considered an unpopular opinion to say that Oto-ing is not that difficult?
It is tedious, but it is not the nightmare I heard people describe it as. I am Oto-ing CV however, so maybe other types are more difficult.

To me it's the other way around, it's more difficult to oto VCV tho 😅
But I love otoing CV, and I know the "secret" on how to make it very smooth!

@VocaloSynthesis I suppose it does. I feel like I dodged a bullet then. I was originally going to use my headset mic until it started to break, so I bought a regular mic. Even then I had difficulty because it picked up my computer's humming. Thankfully it seems Utau is not picking up on those sounds.
@mahalisyarifuddin I love it too. What is the secret?:nemu_smile_lili:

oh agree, i definitely find it easy for the most part but man its tedious and probably the number one reason why i am slow on making more voicebanks haha.
For anyone that has purchased Vocaloids or merchandise from Character Planet, is there a way to track your package?
    Rylitah

    EMS itself should be fine, especially since it already shipped. I think it's just Japan Post specifically that's not allowing EMS shipments to various countries (including the US)... which isn't a problem with Character Planet, since it's shipping from Korea ^^;;

If it isn't EMS that they went with for once though (it should say in the email what shipping they used), they may temporarily be using something else.

Ah, that makes sense! I'm pretty sure I heard some other countries have suspended shipping as well but wasn't sure if South Korea was one or not

Good thing I buy my vocal synths digitally then. I was completely unaware of suspended shipping. The only ones I would have to worry about are Stardust, Kaito and Meiko V1, but by the time I get them I would assume/hope the pandemic will have calmed down and shipping will be less restricted.
I wish I was not so lazy when it came to tuning. Every time I open the editor I just can not stand to tune, even if I'm almost half-way through the cover. I am thinking of pushing through it and doing it tonight just so the cover can be finished.

Mood I have random spurts where I'm like yes let's tune everything rn now or the more likely scenario is I tune one note get winded save and quit XD repeat till the tuning is done
    Stardust
    Stardust
The latter is what always happens to me:ring_ani_lili:I envy those who can tune in one sitting. It also does not help that I find more fun making VSQs/VPRs/etc then actually tuning them, even though the former is much more difficult.
I'm trying a different method right now where I tune one verse, then switch to something else, then go back to tuning, then repeat. I do not know if it will help me, but I need to try something to fix this problem.
Does anyone know a better way to lay down flats in Clip Studio? I have been using the wand+fill bucket method, but if you are using Brushes that are not any variation of the G-Pen, it ends up missing some spots.
Also, is there any way to color backgrounds without it affecting the upper layers when using the Realistic Watercolor tools?
I hope we get news about Eleanor SynthV2 soon.

    That Titanic clip:clara_ani_lili:
@Krin I think the lack of expressiveness depends on tuning, which seems to matter a lot to more relaxed vocals. A lot of Luka songs I have listened to made her sound very dull because of the tuning, whereas in other songs she did not sound dull.
I still would love more pitches though. More pitches the merrier:miku_ani_lili:

@Stardust true!! maybe it's her straightforward (or too accurate?) pronunciation that i meant. but i do really like the sound of her in mid + high range with the current pitch. hopefully she gets a lower pitch too because that's my problem area with her :,,)

@Krin Now that you mention it, that may be the reason why. Hopefully the new recordings will be a bit more expressive, if that's the correct word, without losing her relaxed tone.
She sounds lovely in that range. I haven't used her much, as I only have her SynthV2 Lite version, but I can see her having problems in lower pitches due to her voice being somewhat high.

Is anyone familiar with a good guide to making Japanese Vocaloids sing in English?
    mobius017
    mobius017
You're probably going to find phoneme replacement--replacing phonemes in one language with their closest equivalents from another language--to be really useful to you. Like uncreepy mentioned, a chart of available phonemes is going to really help. This chart is from the Vocaloid Wiki and is meant to be used to convert English to Japanese, but you could always use it in reverse. Like uncreepy mentioned, the results won't necessarily be perfect, but based on personal experience with other languages, it's possible to get pretty good results--how good the results are may vary depending on the particular voicebanks involved, how close the phonemes are, and maybe what you can do to overcome any differences by manipulating the Vocaloid parameters (GEN, OPE, etc.).
    morrysillusion
    morrysillusion
sadly dont know any specific guide, as uncreepy said i think its a lot of practice and just feeling it out to get the right sounds. i will list some things to keep in mind/stuff i do though:
    - its a tedious process to change *every* single phoneme and as a base, i tend to use a ENG -> JPN phoneme converter plug in while in V4. i use one by SalatarisSpace as the other one i have puts way too many voiceless consonants and it was annoying. im not sure if the plug in i use is available but id be ok sending it if you need it! i edit it heavily from what it does because it doesnt do everything, but it sets something to work off of and again, i dont have to do everyone by hand completely lol.
    - experiment with vowels and combine them to find better sounds like [a M] or {a e] etc. theres a lot to put together, some are weird but some are handy
    - its best not to throw all your consonants and vowels into one note like engloids, like this [s t o p], i tend to break it up so the consonants will be properly voiced, like [s M_0] [t o] [p M_0] - making the first and last notes short. keep in mind how many consonants should be voiced as well...sometimes too many makes it sounds like a mess. say the words and thing about what you hear best.
    - on not using too many consonants- the sound [M] is a very good closing off sound that is good for e's or end sounds like "ow" or "oh", if looking for a 'closing sound' like that, i recommend using a vowel over the consonant as end consonants without a vowel (ex [w] and not [w M]) are barely voiced or not voice at all (which goes to the above on why i make short consonant notes like [s M_0]
    - experiment with parameters! VEL and OPE, but mostly OPE, have been very great in helping me find slightly better pronunciations of the consonants and vowels.
    - the issue with [4] (japanese r)... theres a lot of ways you can use it, i sometimes use it as an english r or l and it just depends. i suggest messing with OPE when using it to see what other sounds you can get from it.
    - think in the way japanese is structured in CV. you here a lotta "to" "po" "su" etc and thats why its best to not settle with [s t o p] or [ p\ M d] or whatever. english is made that way, so the base conversions youll see from plugins and such wont work well. think like CV and break up the words accordingly.

this is all based off of using pretty much purely V Flower, so some of my tips may not be super helpful, youll have to hear out the vocaloids you use and get to know where their flaws are.

Thank you all for the advice :clara_rylitah: I'll keep these in mind. And thank you for the guide Mobius017. I didn't know the wiki had such a useful resource.
Can you use Miku V3 Vivid and Miku V3 Light without owning Miku V3? I am interested in the extra banks, but I already own Miku V4X.
I had a very strange dream today when I had to take a nap.
I had a dream that someone on Vocaverse was really upset that users were posting Kaito songs and calling it "spam", even though it was on topic and in the correct subforum. There was a back and forth and it ended with them just being upset that people liked Kaito when they believed he was a "terrible low quality vocal". The strangest part was, that it felt very real.
I have no idea why I had such a strange dream considering how peaceful Vocaverse is. I think maybe stress from RL things are getting to me, or TheStarPlace's status post about people's unrelenting hatred of Kaito somehow surfaced in my dreams.

But, back to reality, I hope to finish tuning a cover today. It'll be from start to finish, and I'm quite excited for it.:clara_rylitah:
