  • 2021: The year that either 1.) the Vsingers dominate the scene and finally shut the "vOcAlOiD iS dEaD" bullshit up or 2.) VocaTwitter proves once and for all that it's a one-tricky pony and ignore all the development going on with the Vsingers to repeat the same tired old joke over and over again.

I'm not one to bash the Western fandom, but after all the attachments I've developed to Chinese synths this past year... I really hope they come and remain a fixture of this portion of the fandom, rather than being big for two seconds, being used in a handful of Circus and A/k/i songs, and then being drop-kicked back into irrelevancy.
My last cover of 2020 is up! Ah, this has been a good year for me, cover-wise. I have the Almighty Haiyi to thank for that.
I had to run to the Walmart by our store to refuel, so I figured I'd drop by the TJ Maxx next to it and browse the skincare aisle. Normally all they have to offer that interests me is Andalou Naturals and the odd sheet mask, so I figured it'd be a short and painless little trip.

What did they have? Innisfree Melting Balm. Innisfree Green Tea Foaming Cleanser. Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Clay Mousse Mask. Innisfree Jeju Pomegranate Revitalizing Serum. All discounted. I've never gotten to try Innisfree before.

My wallet may be a little more empty, but my heart is full.

    I'M SO HAPPY
Y'know what I'm shocked to discover is so rare? The first Rune Factory game. The first BokuMono game makes more sense: it was released right at the end of the SNES's lifespan and didn't have many copies made for its Western release, and now that it's such a cult classic it's remained in high demand. But Rune Factory? It was earlier on in the DS's life, BokuMono was popular enough that they knew Rune Factory would do well and made abundant copies, and even when it was first released its price point was fairly low (as I was 10 at the time and able to buy it on my own with money from my rubber band bracelet sidegig; I only charged $0.50 a pop and the adults at my church were the only ones buying).

Like... a new copy of RF4 goes for, what, $40?, but you can find a second-hand copy for under $20. RF1? It's not HM SNES levels of expensive, not by a long-shot, but damn if it's not annoyingly more than I was expecting to dish out.

I never even got past the first dungeon. I was just there to plant some turnips and make Felicity my wife. Oh, Darby, why were you such a stupid child?

Anymore, I'm a slut for Bianca, but I honestly don't know if I'll have the patience... the only way to woo her is to just talk to her every day until her heart meter is maxed out, which takes, iirc, around three in-game years. I've got some thinking to do...

DS game prices in general have been increasing as the DS itself falls into retro status. I've noticed even a few Pokemon games have gone up in price over the years, despite copies being common on online marketplaces.

Hmm... the thing is, several more RF games were on the DS, but they’re all much cheaper. I suppose it makes sense, given the first game is... well, the first game, but given it’s also considered one of the weakest entries in the series, I really did expect it to be less coveted. RF4 being universally acclaimed yet being available for half the price of the first game or less just startled me. :clara_ani_lili:
I’m going through my older fics trying to find motivation to write again... and y’know what? I wanna do something I never do. I wanna celebrate a passage that I’m quite proud of.

A knock on his door woke Oliver from a dreamless sleep at half past noon.

    “Come in,” he called.

    No one came in.

With a heavy sigh, he dragged himself from the safety of his bed and trudged to the door, cracking it open carefully.

There was no one on the other side.

There was, however, something laying on the floor. A tray of food.

Oliver knelt to collect and examine it. It wasn’t all that fancy. A cup of water, a bowl of green tea (no… matcha? What was the occasion?), and—

And a stack of crepes. A little burnt around the edges, drizzled unevenly with melted caramel, and topped with banana slices of varying thicknesses.

His heart jumped into his throat then sunk just as quickly into his pelvis, and he almost put the tray back. But his stomach protested, as he’d skipped dinner last night and breakfast this morning, so reluctantly he brought it into his room.

Two months ago, Oliver made dinner for the household, a fairly modest offering of a few English dishes and several of his favorite desserts. Len, the second-worst cook in the house (just barely above Gumi), had been enraptured, and he begged Oliver to teach him in his ways.

“Well, I… alright.” He wasn’t much of a teacher, never had been, but he couldn’t find it in his heart to say no. “What would you like to start with?”

“What about… ooh, what about those super thin pancakes? Those were really good! I wanna learn to make those like a true Englishman would!”

    “I mean, they’re technically French, so…”

“Eh. They taste good. Teach me anyway.”

It took several days and half the contents of the household fire extinguisher, but eventually Len got the hang of crepe-making. In spite of the mess and the wasted materials and the smell of smoke that lingered in the kitchen for weeks afterwards, the memory quickly became one of Oliver’s favorites.

He never wanted to forget the sight of Len, face powdered with flour and arms and hair flecked with extinguishing foam and sleeves singed, laughing sheepishly and promising the next attempt wouldn’t be so disastrous. The intense concentration as he handled the thin dough with a pair of spatulas and uttered some cross of a mantra and a prayer that he wouldn’t drop them again. The utter glee that he vocalized loudly when he finally presented to Oliver his first decently-prepared plate. Through the calamity and the destruction and the half-serious threats of eviction Meiko spat their way, they’d laughed until their stomachs hurt and hummed and sang as they cooked and cleaned, and if ever Oliver felt he had a place in the world, it was then, lost in carefree and domestic joy alongside his best friend.

“You know what? I’m gonna surprise you one of these days,” Len had said as they began their third deep-cleaning of the kitchen walls, still darkened with soot in spite of their best efforts. “You’re gonna be sick in bed and having the worst day ever, then I’m gonna burst in and bring you a tray full of the most delicious crepes you’ve ever eaten and make it all better!”

And they were delicious. The best batch Len had ever made. And suddenly Oliver’s room felt more vast than Royal Albert Hall, and there he was center-stage, a deafening silence and overwhelming emptiness his only audience.

The tears that he was so sure had run dry the night before returned with a vengeance.

He set the empty tray back in the hallway when he was done and cried himself back to sleep.

    Fuck, I wanna write again.

It's been six years and I still cry every single time.
Y'all remember that video Patuk made for me for my birthday? She made me one for Christmas, and I got to watch it with her. I'm fucking WEEPING I'm so happy.

God help me, Fourth Ray Beauty’s entire website is 25% off. Thank God I got so many fast food gift cards, because the rest of my money is going to skincare.
I made myself sad reading canon-compliant fanfiction. Time to go read Courting Habits of the Line of Durin for the umpteenth time!
