  • So the guy who helped me fill out the paperwork all but said my laptop's a lost cause. He offered to let me reschedule if I had any doubts whatsoever that I hadn't backed up something I needed, and then he gave me a special folder to keep my stickers in, because "There's a chance you might not be seeing them again otherwise". Soooo data loss is imminent.

I've got everything I need backed up to an external hard drive, though, and my Vocaloids have been deactivated so I can install and re-activate them again, and it's all covered under warranty, so I'm not too concerned. And while my stepsister's computer doesn't have nearly as much space, I can still probably temporarily install V4 and a handful of VBs to hold me over!
My stepsister's letting me use her laptop while mine's in the shop! She keeps it on the charger 24/7, so its average battery life is 20 minutes, making it useless for school (there's only one class where I sit anywhere near a charger), but I can at least use it at home or take it out and hook it up someplace. So I won't have to go without too much in the coming month!
So what was SUPPOSED to be a quick-fix now requires Best Buy to ship my computer back to the manufacturer to fix, which will take up to a month. I asked if there was any risk of losing my info on my computer. “Of course there is.” I asked what I was supposed to do about my Vocaloids, because if my computer gets wiped while they’re still installed I can’t recover them because they’ll still be registered as installed on another computer. “Well, sounds like you’ll need to uninstall them all.” So I’ve gotta uninstall all of my Vocaloids, and then Vocaloid itself, and then save the files to an external hard drive before I can send it out. So I’m gonna have to go a month without a computer. A month without Vocaloid or CeVIO or SynthV. A month without writing conveniently. A month without anything I’m even marginally good at.

Because fuck having any reason to live and be productive, right? ٩( ᐛ )و

Technically, you should be able to just deauthorize the Vocaloids. So you would just run the appropriate version's deauthorization tools. Most likely, you'll get the data back safe and sound, and you can just reauthorize with the codes that you have hopefully saved somewhere.

I really second what @patuk said, though--keeping a backup of any files you don't want to lose, installers, serial codes, etc., is crucial. I was lucky when my PC started having issues--I'd just recently been thinking and planning for what might happen if my computer was to die. So when it started to seem like it was on its last legs, I was at least mentally ready for evacuating my Vocaloids. I really think of the authorization/deauthorization process as this ticking time bomb under which a huge number of software users live, because everything fails eventually.

Think of it like this--a regular platter-based HD (as opposed to a Solid State Drive) works by having a mechanical arm hover over a spinning platter, reading electronic charges from a distance of a few microns. If, for whatever reason, the arm hits the platter, the HD is probably ruined. Even if someone can do some forensic black magic to salvage the data on the drive, you're not going to use it anymore, so if your Vocaloids are registered using it, they all die instantly. (Or rather, fall on the grace of their mostly-secret grace licenses, or maybe working with Yamaha in Japanese to clear out the license that you can't use anymore.)

    It's good to be prepared.

(Sorry, I really don't mean to sound condescending. I just feel strongly about this.)

No, it didn't sound condescending at all! Y'all are absolutely right. I've got everything important saved to files already. I forgot to save Oliver's download file when I first got this laptop, so after I was able to get another copy, I made sure to save everything so that wouldn't happen again, with him or anyone else. I've also gathered all of my activation codes and put them together on a Docs file, so I can access it via the internet.

And yeah, I forgot about the deauthorization. Sure enough, I was able to deactivate everything with one click! If it all goes off without a hitch, I won't have to reinstall everything, just reactivate it, which will save me a ton of time. And if I DO have to reinstall to a new computer, well, I've got all of the files I need.
    WyndReed
    WyndReed
Something I’d suggest, incase you have to reinstall everything, is to make a list of the programs you might need to install again. (Tip from experience. My old laptop bombed on me and trying to recreate my program list from memory was a total nightmare.)
So the bottom of my laptop randomly popped off and won’t reconnect. I got a warrently on it, but it’ll void if I get if fixed here, so tomorrow I have to drive all the way back to town to get it fixed (it’s only a half-hour drive, but I don’t like driving that far; it’s nerve-wracking) and until then, I can’t use it. Like, it works still, but I don’t wanna risk making it worse.

So for the rest of the night, I’m gonna drown my sorrows in Dr. Pepper and HoLV. I’ve been meaning to start a new file anyway...
@patuk I just wanna say thank you so much for directing me to Lightworks. It's taking some getting used to, but it's already so much simpler to use than what I was previously doing, and it doesn't start lagging when I add more than three tasks. I owe you my life.

You're welcome! Always happy to help! :kaito_move:
After stewing from my failure with 1LDK, I'm jumping back into the fray and finishing up Oliver's/Prima's Lullaby. I hope to have it up by the end of the day, or at least by tomorrow!
So my cousin got married last night. The ceremony was just over three minutes long, and then we spent an hour helping ourselves to cake, chocolate, and fruit punch. The fruit punch came in two varieties: standard punch, and "special" punch, which was less punch and more Malibu. I had three cups.

Basically, it was the best wedding I've ever been to.

I'm kinda there and kinda not. I love the idea, the aesthetics, all that, and I love imagining weddings for my favorite pairings and designing wedding outfits and the likes. But actual weddings freak me out. It's half because of social anxiety and half because of my autism, and weddings and their after-parties are often noisy and last a really long time with little opportunity for escape. My brother got married last year, and it was lovely... but it was just 16 hours of stress and more stress, and that was just the day itself.

I don't anticipate ever getting married, but if I do, I want my wedding to be like my cousin's. ^^’

Yeah, I get that. I think my biggest gripe with weddings is sometimes the ceremonies are way too long. I have a lot of trouble sitting still and paying attention for long periods of time. But my SO and I are both atheist so our ceremony wont have any religious elements to it, which should make it a lot shorter since most weddings ive been too spend a lot of time on reading bible scripture. I hope anyway, cause I think if I stand up there for too long I'll start swaying around or moving a lot lol!
But a 16 hour wedding does sound stressful for a guest! I'm glad you enjoyed your cousins wedding so much. c:

    peaches2217
Yeah, religious weddings do tend to be longer. My family and I are Christians, so weddings tend to be all over the board; the actual ceremony at my brother's wedding was only about twenty minutes, the rest of it was me helping out beforehand and then the after-party. The record was set by my grandparents; when they remarried, the ceremony (the ceremony alone) was two and a half hours long. (I was eight and the flower girl; they've still got the video, where I was caught on film spinning in circles to amuse myself and scratching my butt with a rose.)
This is the first year I’m actively looking forward to Black Friday. I hope the Voctro Lab Vocaloids go on sale again - I’d love to snatch Maika up!

same!!! theres so much tech stuff i want this year. I want a new daw and a new video editor and new vocaloids and--- just about new everything~
I really wish Yamaha would extend a Black Friday sale for voicebanks. Even 15% off would be great... TToTT

@patuk Big Fish Audio often has sales on the Vocaloids they sell independently of the companies who make them. You can sometimes go on BFA and get Avanna for $30 while she's still $60 on Zero-G's website, and that same logic applies to the others they sell as well. So I don't think that's the issue, honestly. I could be wrong though- I don't know much about this topic, admittedly...

Their contracts might be different but I'm not too sure either :teto_lili: Speaking of Big Fish Audio...didn't they use to sell Sweet Ann and Big Al?? I believe they once did but not anymore which sucks cuz this might have been the only way to get them on sale.

I dunno. I discovered them early last year, at which point they didn’t stock them. If they did and they stopped, though... dang it all!

It's possible to transfer a Vocaloid over to another computer so long as it's been uninstalled on the computer it was originally installed on. I was able to transfer all of my VBs over that way when I got my new laptop.

To that end... would it be possible to send a VB to someone else after uninstalling it? Send them the download files and the serial code, assuming they have an editor it would work on? Because there's some VBs I just really don't see myself ever using, and I only got them because they were on sale, and I'd feel awful if they just sat wasting away on my laptop.

    cafenurse
Yeah, it is possible. but if I recall correctly it is against vocaloids TOS? or maybe VO just had a rule that you couldnt trade.
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
I don't see why it'd be against the TOS (although, admittedly, I'm one of those heathens that's never read the TOS). I feel like it'd be similar to gifting a VB to someone - you've paid for it, so as long as you pass along the legit VB and not a pirated version (or you haven't pirated the VB you're giving away), it shouldn't be an issue. That's just my view on it, but again, I haven't read the TOS.
    cafenurse
    cafenurse
Yeah im not sure either, but sometimes TOSs are really...particular. I think maybe the rule might have been no trading actually, but my memory is fuzzy. But I dont think youd be doing any harm cause like you said, it's like a gift. So Id say go for it
Prima's seriously grown on me! She really does have a beautiful voice. She's very difficult to work with, but it's been fun trying to figure her out.

She's literally overlooked I feel like she doesn't get the credit she deserve. She's not difficult just different and needs to be tuned.

    peaches2217
I agree with her being overlooked, but I disagree about her not being difficult, especially for someone like me who has little experience with specialized VBs and V2s in general. I'm not saying her difficulty is off-putting, though. Like I said, she's a lot of fun, and a challenge worth accepting!

My father and I are in the midst of a pact: it's very, very possible I'll be getting either a Vocaloid or Haiyi for Christmas! I'm feeling kinda crummy right now, so that definitely made my night.

Also, my most recent chapter on Ao3 raked me in 3 new kudos and a comment, and I'm making good headway on a new chapter as well! I have got to start looking on the bright side more. Things are gonna be okay. I don't know why I keep forgetting that.
Since I'm failing miserably with my writing and Vocaloiding right now, I figured I'd bury my sorrows in FoMT:TLE.

I'm at the end of Year 1, and I already have all of the Blessed Tools! This is easily a new record. Now all I need is to order the stupid clock so I can get the Big Bed and propose to Rick, but the Shopping Channel just HAS to go off-air for the end of Winter and beginning of Spring. Frickin' annoying. But still, I'll be a married (wo)man within another season!

At least I'm doing well in one life, even if it's just digital.

It's so bad. It's so bad, and everyone's gonna hate it, and I'm gonna humiliate myself if I post it, but I've spent so much freaking time on it that I can't just throw it out. I don't know what to do.

I've done everything I can think to do. It's just not sounding good, no matter how hard I try. I might upload the current product here and get everyone's opinion and see if it's worth trying to save or not, but it just... I'm upset. No matter how hard I work it doesn't sound good and I don't know why.

Futari De is finished and posted. So now...

    *cracks knuckles*

I'm gonna finish 1LDK if it kills me.

(Y'all are all invited to the funeral by the way.)
Frickin' Haiyi. Frickin' $95.34 plus $2.33 domestic shipping plus undetermined international shipping. Frickin' frick.

Eleanor/Genbu/Renri are only free because they're either incomplete (Renri, Genbu) or were a test VB (Eleanor). Never a good idea to base prices off them given that AiKO has been out for ages at $60 and the Quadimension Vbs are significantly higher quality. They're basically around the same price as most VOCALOID voicebanks, I believe Superbuy offer a calculator for shipping somewhere on their site (weight will be 200g) if you want to figure out a ballpark for that.
    peaches2217
    peaches2217
Yeah. I admit I was coming from a place of ignorance. Prior to joining these forums two months ago, the only other vocal synth I even knew about was UTAU, so seeing a synth that offers voicebanks for free, I was like "Oof, why are they making us pay for other VBs?" Given the quality of the Medium5 sisters, I think the price is absolutely fair! I was just... caught off guard by it, I guess. :piko_ani_lili:
I've got a comment on my newest chapter - from someone I've never seen on my fics before! They left it on anon, so I hope they check back and see the response I left. (They asked a question, so I answered it and then thanked them.)

...do you have to enter an email address to comment on anon on Ao3? I know some sites make you do that, but I don't have enough experience going anon on Ao3 to know for sure.
