This is how I picture the Vocaloid universe in my head.
Several companies have manufactured androids built to sing. These androids exist as characters that are mass-produced and sent into the world to live their lives. Thankfully, separate models of the same character don't usually meet, so life appears normal for them. (There are exceptions; for example, there was a time when two Rins living in similar areas got their Lens swapped and had to meet up to exchange them back.) These androids have something special: their voice boxes are run by special vocal synthesizers that allow them to sing as well as speak. They have been dubbed "Vocaloids."
Many Vocaloids are created with special programming that nearly acts as a "soul" for them. It allows them to adapt to their environment and develop a personality, interests and even beliefs. Vocaloids as characters are diverse and their model styles can range from androids to humans to even the likes of fairies and spirits.
In this case, a young woman named AVANNA moves into a new house to find a resident already there- a cheerful android girl named Hatsune Miku. Though confusion ensues at first due to the surprise, the new roommates quickly become friends.
Hatsune Miku: A cheerful, neat and polite young android, 16 years old in physical attributes. She enjoys singing, dancing and listening to music, and has a diverse vocal range. She speaks Japanese natively and English fluently (not by any means native-like, but she speaks it readily and easily). She also speaks conversational Chinese but her accent is poor due to not having the proper linguistic data. She is good at preparing meals, drawing, and rhythm games.
AVANNA: A mellow and even-tempered young Irishwoman, 18 years old, a Vocaloid herself but less robotic in design. She speaks English natively and has considered learning Japanese, though she and Miku mainly communicate in the former due to Avanna's lack of experience in the latter. She enjoys baking and gardening. She enjoys video games but is terrible at anything that isn't a puzzle game or Animal Crossing.
Chis-A: A new arrival, an AI personality recently transferred to an android body. Though she seems mature at first glance, she is actually mentally young and can be a bit reckless. She is an introvert and can be socially awkward. She speaks Japanese and some English. She is an absolute legend at video games and incredible with technology, but cannot cook to save her life and is not at all a dancer.
