I would recommend trying these steps if that doesn't work:
SUPPORT - VOCALOID2: 起動時に「合成エンジンを開けません!(CANNOT OPEN SYNTHESIS ENGINE!)」と表示され起動できません。 | SONICWIRE
Also, you may need to set your system to JP locale depending which voicebank you have.
Wine (and I assume ReactOS) can cause serious problems with Vocaloid's activations, so I wouldn't recommend trying that, especially not with the touchy V1.
It's rather scattershot whether you will have luck getting V1 to work on Win10 onward or not; Leon above and some others I've spoken to had...
What's strange to me is they've ALWAYS been pushing Miku heavily overseas, even when it was more niche. Miku, Rin, and Len will never manage to make significant inroads in the West, just due to their vocal style. If Internet had marketed Gumi English a bit better Gumi could've probably...
Semi-related, but I've felt for a while that the sheer number of letter voices combined with the lack of notable presence they have (they really aren't marketed much) makes most of them totally forgettable and difficult to market. Professional producers might not be looking for the same...
For what it's worth, I think Michelle is more understandable than the demo makes her seem; the mix is overpowering her in that and making her hard to hear- she's really not that bad for understandability (disclaimer that i changed the pronunciation of "devastating" to be the right number of...
Sorry it took me a couple days, but I would recommend just downloading the import tool from Zero-G's old FAQ rather than go through Sonicwire's system. It's the same tool (Piapro import is a seperate, more automated system)
Preserving miki's tone gets a little strange because miki was also intended to be a realistic capture of Miki Furukawa's voice (which it was, probably the closest V2 to their VP by a large margin), so they could go a lot of directions there.
Nancy's voice is significantly deeper than Jenny Shima's so if she is supposed to be diva (which I personally don't believe) she has a different vp now
Speaking terms doesn't imply that they are willing or able to rerecord to be fair. If they were open to recording new samples, I find it pretty unlikely they would have gone with this method instead.
I feel like it's in a style that's been sort of popular lately where things just...sound atemporal? Not a style I care for but it definitely does sound like a lot of popular vocasongs lately
Avanna sounding like there's cotton over the mic was intentional, would like to know if I went too far with it
Any other general feedback would be appreciated!

Yamaha is having a contest rn where you can win V6 and Cubase by making music using the trial versions of each
Not sure if this is "unpopular" more than "just something no one thinks about" but I think it was a very good idea of yamaha to tease what they're still working on for V6. Yamaha works slow (for a lot of reasons), so I think letting us know "there's more stuff coming" made it definitely feel...
I also don't think that it helps that they have LITERALLY NO distinguishing design characteristics. Like, I don't think all VBs need to have an avatar or whatever, but having several paid VBs with literally just letters makes it pretty hard for any to stand out at all.
