I get that a lot with Gumi. She ends up sounding raspy and strained, so I'm also interested in any pointers. What I have found out from my own experimentation is that a lot of it is from the automatic application of overdone pitch curves and vibrato. In particular, that weak and "wavery" sound...

I imagine it's something both Yamaha and Crypton want to make absolutely sure is going to be in an acceptable state, given how big of a deal it is for both of them to release a new Miku bank on Vocaloid after close to a decade. It would be a PR disaster to have something like early NT happen...

It sounds comparable to V4X to me, though stylistically more like standard Miku than a "dark" bank. It lacks reverb or other typical vocal processing, so it's a little rough, but not out of the ordinary. I'm thinking maybe...less nasal than the regular NT but kind of boxy or boomy? Not quite...
