I'd guess it's because crazy reverbed toms from the Linn drum machine were a huge staple of 80s music (e.g. the start of Never Gonna Give You Up) to the point that it's had a lasting influence. Personally, I'm not sure how else I would use a tom sample lol. *hides upcoming project*
I do tend to prefer "dry" sounds though, so I can build the reverb/compression/etc I want.
