I had to look up what was IRL (in real life, correct?)
and yes, talking by my experience, usually it happens in those 2 ways:
1. I've met several members of Vocaverse (and previously VocaloidOtaku) thanks to the forum, usually we start knowing each other on the topic of an event, and then if we wanna meet before the event, we can decide where at what time (example, in front of hotel of stay the day before or same day). This is true especially for new meetings, because meeting by chance during the event is more difficult because many many people. For friends of the forum/twitter I already know, it's ok to meet by chance during or after the event ^-^
2. This is true too, and especially at events in Japan, fans like to exchange self made "business cards" with their profile photo of twitter , niconico or pixiv. In line for a concert, for an exhibition or just sitting waiting for the concert (the doors always open 1 hour before the start). For me, the biggest and most nice surprise is when I start talking to somebody I don't know in real life, then we exchange our twitter, we realize we are already following each other, we look at our profile picture and.."ohhhh after long time we finally meet!" it's a very nice feeling
it also happened a third way: sometimes at events like Magical Mirai and Snow Miku some forum members already know me (probably thanks to a friend in common) but I don't know them IRL, and when they approach me with "are you.. MagicalMiku??" i'm super surprised and happy!
