Open-source software that sounds like Vocaloid 2?

Vocaloid 2 is known for its iconic sound. Newer singing synthesis software has gotten more realistic, but many people (including myself) like the specific sound of Vocaloid 2 specifically. However, the actual Vocaloid 2 software is very old and cannot be purchased anymore. Additionally, no new voicebanks can be made for it. For this reason, I am wondering if there is any open-source project that attempts to replicate its iconic sound.

I have been searching quite extensively, however I have only been able to find the following:
- There was a project called "Rocaloid" that seems to be close to what I am looking for. Unfortunately, it seems like it was only ever partially finished and has not been developed in over a decade. Rocaloid Development Team
- Second, I was able to find something called "MaddeLoid". Unfortunately it too was never finished. My first LV2 plugin « tobias_platen's blog
- Finally, I was able to find this series of blog posts by someone called QueueSevenM. I am not sure whether they are trying to make something like Vocaloid or do something else. I also haven't been able to find any released software, at least not yet. On the other hand, this one is from a few months ago and seems to be actively being worked on. You can still buy brand new Vocaloid 2 voicebanks from Crypton japanese online shop:

You will need a proxy shopping service to buy and make it delivered to you, but it's still possible. Also, with the proxy shopping you can buy used copies from yahoo auctions, mercari jp and rakuten jp. (Import fees depend on where you live, but think of around 20% of the selling price on average)
You might find something on eBay too, but probably more expensive.

Regarding the open source, maybe you can look at OpenUTAU. I know, utau voicebanks don't sound like Vocaloid2, but at least you have open source software and many voice banks to choose from, most of them are free, just look here in the UTAU section or on the Utau forum.
Any other projects are illegal, because it's clearly written in Yamaha terms of use that any reproduction or reverse engineering of their software is not permitted.
