Installing Vocaloid software on new laptop

Hi everyone! I recently bought a new laptop, only to have to return it because I kept getting errors trying to install Vocaloid software. The errors were something along the lines of "device not found," and from my brief internet research, looked like it could mean something as simple as a problem with the hard drive. I remember it giving these errors when I was trying to install V4 voice banks, such as the Luka V4, Kagamine, or Fukase banks.

I admit the laptop cost only $800, but my current laptop (on which Vocaloid 4, 5, and 6 software works fine) is very similar, the main difference being that the Intel i7 processor is two generations older than that of the new one I tried. It has 16 GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive. I currently have the ZOLA V3, VY2V3, and YOHIOloid V3 banks, the Kagamine, Luka, Fukase, VY1V4, DEX, and DAINA V4 banks, and all 16 free V6 voice banks. Installing them has never been a problem in the past, though I think my DVDs are beginning to wear out on my physical copies.

Whenever I've upgraded computers, I've never had to worry about being able to install the Vocaloid software. I know there is now lots of competition to Vocaloid, and I posted earlier on this forum about frustrations I'm having with the V6 Editor, so I know there are better and less frustrating options out there. But since I do mostly choral work, I'm kind of reluctant to spend perhaps $1-2000 to start over with a completely different system like SynthV, and buy maybe 16 new voice banks. On the other hand, if that's what needs to be done, perhaps I should start saving up. If any of you know anything about orchestral music software, then you'll know what I mean when I say that I've used Finale for 35 years since its inception, but it is now being shut down, and we the users were all encouraged to buy Dorico at an attractive crossgrade price. Likewise, my days of being able to use the Kagamine and Luka voice banks are certainly numbered, and from what I've read on this forum, it could be that Vocaloid as a whole is headed for the trash can.

So here are my questions: How can I be sure that when I try buying a new laptop again, I will be able to install the Vocaloid software? Or is it simply getting to the point where Vocaloid software will no longer work on a modern Windows computer? Finally, is there a way to legally convert my (legally purchased) Vocaloid DVD software to files that I can carry on a USB drive, like I'm currently doing with all my (also legally purchased) digital copy installers?

Thank you all for reading, and in advance for any advice!

there shouldnt ever be any issues with a particular kind of laptop/PC being able to install any Vocaloid software-- so long as its not a Chromebook because those are weird. all vocaloid software should work with little issue on Windows 10 or 11 (dont quote me 100% on 11 as i dont use it) whether its Vocaloid 1 or 6. if you have errors in the future itd be good to see those specifically, i wouldnt ever worry about needing to return the whole computer as it should be fixable with the right information! its possible something could be wrong with the installation location, maybe you were missing drivers, etc... hard to say.

my suggestion for saving DVDs would be to make a digital copy of all the files contained on the disc. the disc should have an installer on it and if you save that on a folder outside of the dsc, you should be able to launch it in the future without the DVD

As far as the dvds go, you can easily save the installers and extra files over to your pc or usb/external drive by viewing the dvd in file explorer and then copying the files to the intended location. No need for any sort of conversion.

I agree, there shouldn't be any issue with any PC with Windows on it (and like morrysillusion said, that's especially true with Windows 10, but also Windows 11 should be fine). Maybe there were some settings in the Windows preinstalled that made difficult to install some extra software. Are you sure it wasn't Windows N edition? Because the N edition doesn't allow new software installed, only from the Microsoft Store.

What were the specs of the old and new laptop? Do you remember the model number? and some of the error codes?
Since a brand new laptop can have lots of unwanted apps preinstalled (think of extra antivirus software), and probably the preinstalled user didn't have administrator privileges, it's possible those were the issues that stopped the installation of Vocaloid software.
What I recommend is, make a clean new install of Windows 10/11 Pro edition. Use the official Media Creation Tool to create a bootable USB pendrive, delete the previous installation and install a fresh Windows on your PC (don't worry for any missing drivers, Windows Update after the installation will automatically download and install them):
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows11

also, disable the annoying UAC (User Account Control) from the Control Panel:
enable the .NET Framework 3.5 (some older versions of Vocaloid might need it):
and yes, saving your DVD installers into folders of external hard drives as backup is a good idea :seeu_lili:
