Do you tune with the instrumental playing at the same time?

For the most part you use off-vocal tracks, correct? If so, that can be an issue if the off-vocal is already "mastered", or at the very least has bus compression applied. In those cases it'd probably be very difficult to prevent your vocals from doing anything else other than sit on top. (But not impossible, I would imagine.)

My question is, how do others do it then? Others will cover what I cover using off-vocals that have already been mastered and make them sound perfect. I never can.
