Of course, for your vocals you probably don't want to fade right down the absolute silence. Instead just a few dB up or a few dB down at strategic locations should do the trick.
Thank you so much! I had no idea about Write and Read modes. That said, I DO use automation, though I usually set it all by hand. I'll try this and see how it goes!
EDIT: The thing is, no matter how much automation I do, the voices inevitably clip, which thanks to the compressors just sound... compressed. The instrumental track suffers the exact same fate. Turning off the limiter helps a LITTLE bit, but of course it pisses the entire program off because clipping. I try amending this by turning each track down and then just bumping up the volume on the Master, but that fixes nothing. The whole thing sounds disgusting and unpleasant to listen to and I honest-to-God have no idea what the fuck I'm doing wrong.
