(2/3) …okay, maybe that’s a tiiiiiny bit dramatic, but what I mean: people have latched onto SynthV to such an extent that many fans believe (or at least act like) SynthV can do no wrong. Every new release is the most revolutionary thing ever, Vocaloid could NEVER, and if you don’t like it or if you just don’t prefer it then obviously you’re a tone-deaf hater. Most fans at least aren’t that blatant in their attitudes, but the general atmosphere is still present.

SynthV went from a fun and quality synth that I could enjoy for its own sake, to something untouchable because it was the anti-Vocaloid, the savior of vocalsynthesis itself, and God help anyone who dared offer any kind of criticism that wasn’t immediately followed up with tenfold adulation. That contributed to such an oppressive air of forced positivity and toxic attitudes towards any synth that wasn’t SynthV that I came to hate it, and I fell out of love first with SynthV, then with vocalsynths as a whole.

My time away from the fandom helped me reconcile and rediscover my love of the hobby itself, but that distaste for SynthV remained, and I think that’s the reason why. Even in light of 1.7.0, there were people saying “This is literally the only bad thing they’ve ever done, everyone needs to shut up,” and I have this feeling of almost dread that, if and when Dreamtonics fixes it, that same forced positivity will return, and the fandom will be expected to once more bow at the feet of the Superior Synth.

I guess these attitudes have been around for about as long as vocalsynthesis as a hobby has been, and SynthV is just the latest object of reverence in this evergreen fandom. But I do miss the more relaxed love that used to surround it.
