Too many audio tools going subscription only could have a very bad chilling effect on amateur music production. If you had to pay monthly for a DAW, effects VSTs, synths (regular and vocal), something like Kontakt, etc., it would be a huge barrier for entry and also cause more homogeneity since people wouldn't want to try new tools as much.

It's a recipe for a terrible tragedy of the commons: enough actors doing something out of self interest could end up killing the whole market.

I don't think other company will follow this trend, the reason is obvious. The way waves do to user is like they kick you out of the boat in the ocean and left you to your fate. Customer are NOT stupid and they know it, but the company are so blind to see that.

There was the time that waves completely dominated the plugins market because they don't really have competitor just like avid pro tools. Now.. everyone caught up or even surpass them, but they still act like 20 years ago, they stuck in the past, ignore and refuse to see what's going on around them.
