I thought it was just that particular phoneme that crashed V2 Engloids. Huh...

It's only Tonio that actually crashes. I think the main issue is that [@] isn't actually SUPPOSED to be used by itself, so there tend to be issues with it (Tonio being the most notable case, but Hio will refuse to sound it in certain circumstances)

Afaik [@] is a fine vowel to use on its own, but that it's just not voiced well in many Vocaloids. I think it's a difficult sound to pick out on its own, similar to how (U) often sounds more like [u:] than how it's supposed to sound. In any case, Defiant is right in that it's only Tonio that crashes on it, and only on notes D3 and up (or apparently B2 and up?? idk), and yes it happens in all editors because it's an error in Tonio's voicebank's programming itself (my pet theory is that it's been corrupted, which somehow made it fuckin huge, explaining why the editor will say it's run out of memory). You can read a little blurb about it on Zero-G's site FAQ. Because of how octave recording works, [@] on Tonio does not crash in lower registers (and in fact sounds quite good in some words, saves him when his Q sounds a little awkward sometimes!).
(EDIT: (U) to avoid underlining oops)

It CAN be used on it's own (in fact, it may be a good idea in some cases) but Vocaloid itself will never use it as a solo phoneme- only as a combo one.(I think)

Oh yeah, not by default. But it's pretty helpful to sub in if a specific sound you're going for isn't working with Q, {, or O: ! I've noticed it has better effects in a lot of non-native Engloids rather than native ones, strangely enough. For example it saves my ass with Kaito and Nana fairly regularly, but ones like Tonio or Ann, it's very niche to ever try to use.

@ Defiant, ah is that it? All I know is that I tossed him on a VSQ I'd tuned for Nana once, for shits and giggles, and where @ made her sound nice, he practically gagged on it LOL. I haven't had cause to even try it on him when tuning for him yet, thankfully :P
