(Mate Engine is also available on Steam with some extra features, but the free version is more than enough)
it supports custom VRM characters, so you can use the free software VRoid Studio to make your own VRM character, or download characters/outfits/accessories (free and paid, you need Pixiv account) from the VRoid Hub:

I swear, one day it was just Miku/ 25 Snow Miku, and the OC. And it has sense sprawled into hitherto unseen scope -w-. I honestly don't know if I like it, but I'm mildy doomer at the time of typing this.

That's actually a good thing that there are so many licensed characters to choose from (and with the sales, the buying price is very low for a high, high quality purchase). The animations are always so cute, and the recorded sounds and the various reactions depending on what happens on screen, is something you don't find anywhere else.
Other free softwares like Mate Engine are good too (Mate Engine in particular is very good), but the very polished look and care of details for every character is found only on Desktop Mate.
Also, the base program is free to play, so think of the extra characters as a good way to support the developer team (which is based in Sapporo, Japan, so that's also why they have a good relationship with Crypton).
And one of the next feature will be the VRM model import, so it'll be possible to have custom VRM models, and the developers read and reply to feedbacks on the Steam forum:gumi_lili:
They deserve all this success, and it's normal that more companies will decide to put more licensed characters ^-^
