ID the Iconic Hawaiian/Tropical Instrument?

You know the iconic two-note slurred Hawaiian/tropical instrumental riff? The one so commonly heard at the first appearance of an island paradise setting that it's sort of a trope? Does anyone know what instrument makes that?

By its sound, I'd guess it's a metal string instrument, possibly electric. In the trope uses, I think it's doing a pitch bend.

I think it might be the high-pitched instrument heard at the beginning of this (probably not the ukulele strumming in the background). Or else maybe a similar instrument.

Anyone have any ideas on what this instrument is? I'm thinking of recreating that trope for a song.

Thank you both so much! Those both sound very like the instrument from that trope; I'm sure it's one of them!
