I almost titled this 'Flavor Foley Fread'

Since they're very prolific in their music releases, and often provoke discussion, I thought a thread was warranted! Flavor Foley is a music circle consisting of Vane Lily, Rice Deity, and Jamie Paige. More details on their official site.

As of writing this OP, Flavor Foley's latest work is Ego Renegade Boy:

My random thoughts, expanded from my status:

It's impressive how Flavor Foley has managed to attract many new people from outside the community, whilst remaining deeply rooted in Vocaloid culture with their creative choices.

Musicians of all genres often make the mistake of becoming too insular in their influences - only taking inspiration from other artists in their sphere. This results in work that feels both derivative to existing fans, and hermetic to outsiders.

My theory is that Flavor Foley's secret sauce is combining popular aesthetics from other communities (rhythm games for Spoken For, analogue horror for Static - it's no coincidence that these are their most viewed songs) with tributes to popular Vocaloid musical styles, producing the perfect gateway into the community. Outside inspiration expands their target audience beyond existing vocal synth fans.

Which vocal synth would you like Flavor Foley to use next? I'd love to see a Nekomura Iroha song from them.

I mean, yeah! I feel like it's also the fact that they tend to produce REALLY good English that's understandable for the average non-synth listener, which is pretty rare. They also just make really catchy songs with relatable themes, like Static's theme of not wanting change to come or Ego Renegade Boy's trans allegory. Also, Butcher Vanity somehow HARD escaping the Vocaloid community was an excellent boosting pad for their future. The combination of producers also allows them to each focus on a different part of the song making, which leads to better creativity and results.

There's very little chance they see this or will do this, but I'd love to see them use Meiko English or Luka English! I feel like they could work some magic with them, especially because with Ego Renegade Boy and Static they've shown that they can use the Crypton English banks for good results.

Can I just comment that when I first listened to Ego Renegade Boy, I didn't even realise they were using Rin V2 Act 1 and not Rin V4 English? Like HOLY CRAP, the English tuning was brilliant for an old Japanese bank!

You can easily go into a thematic discussion about how using Rin Act 1 (a long discontinued bank) plays into the trans allegory by representing a previous female self that's since "passed away", with Len V4 (still currently being sold) being the new male self.
