About Miku. (Basically, her V7 will be free to any owners of her V6)

Not too surprising to me. Miku V6 is still incomplete, they still didn't release her promised Chinese update for instance. it would be of bad taste to then ask people to pay for her V7 when they weren't even given yet everything they were promised when they bought V6

I completely forgot about that! Yeah, not a good look for them. I suppose it's possible that they didn't know V7 was coming soon, but still.

Does this mean no more V6 starters/VYs and Cybers? Or does it mean that asa is getting a V7? I'm so confused.
I was also wondering this, I personally interpreted it as being “Asa is the default vb you get when buying v7”, so idk if that would possibly mean the starter silhouette vbs from v6 are just gone?

With that in mind, I’ll go feral if they do VY series V7 lol

Well, I wasn't expecting that to happen so soon after the speculation the other day lol. The quick turnaround for Miku V7 also tracks with my thoughts on it: the tooling and process of making a V7 bank is probably largely the same as V6, so providers of voice banks won't have as much of a jump to make for this lineage of Vocaloid engine. Which hopefully means this also won't disrupt plans for other Crypton characters being brought over into the new style of voice bank.

Why does Yamaha keep just dropping things without so much as a hint beforehand? Also they still sound like Cevio V1s......
I don't think you should expect SynthV level of realism from vocaloid, it's pretty obvious that it's not even about "ability" at this point, they likely could if they wanted to, but it's definitely not their aim, they likely on purpose keep the artificial feel. actually, the UI of V7 makes it even more obvious they're straying more from the "faceless" voicebank philosophy to go all in into the character aspect as V7 features the characters way more prominently on the editor, whether it's the face on the tracks, the background picture on the piano roll...

That's actually an interesting point. V6 felt very catered to professional producers and musicians, but maybe that didn't do too well? Or maybe they just wanted to see what the reaction would be. Either way, interesting observation!

Yeah, it is pretty clear that Vocaloid isn't trying to be the most realistic. It totally could, but it isn't.

I'm not saying it should be Synth V, but I literally don't hear any improvement at all. I was hoping they'd at least make VX Beta the main engine. Oh well, guess Miku is still stuck here.

I think it's more a change of focus. SynthV already captured the "professional" crowd, and Vocaloid has more been alienating their fanbase with vocaloid 5 which went way too hard into the pro sphere. V6's standard faceless banks never gained any ground in popularity, even though they kept adding more for free to add value to their software.. In the end, vocaloid 6 ended up gaining way more steam when they were supporting the fan backed projects with the vocaloid crowdfundings of character banks like Rei etc.

So I think they realised they should keep moving in this direction, even more when they have Miku back on board.

To be fair, the screenshot we've seen is from the Gumi V7 page. the Gumi page's screenshot likely advertised the Gumi V7 starter pack. and starter packs only include the voice, the editor and the editor's linked voice. not the "standard banks" bundled with standalone editor purchase, so i think this single screenshot doesn't tell the whole story.

Kinda funny to see V7 come out now because SynthV just dropped a huge new beta update that, in my opinion, blows V7 out of the water. Like yes I do love what V7's bringing to the table, but SynthV just gave us a tenth language and expanded phonemes while Vocaloid is just getting to what I think are vocal modes.

WAIT, I just realised something huge on the screenshot !!!!

Look at Asa's track name... "Cross"
wouldn't that imply V7 adds back cross synthesis for AI banks... and this time compatible across all banks including asa x gumi ?
that's still a guess but relative to the naming scheme of the tracks (Main, Harmo), Cross doesn't fit any standard musical convention aside from Cross synthesis

Crazy thing to wake up to on a random Friday but I’ll take it! Can’t believe it’s been 4 years but I supposed we were due for V7 at this point lol. Glad that the upgrade price this time is a lot more affordable.

gonna need to hear more but Gumi V7 is already sounding less buzzy, which alongside Vocal modes/appends are the 2 biggest improvements I wanted out of V6. Hopefully it won’t take too long to hear more details about what’s new

seems like on the japanese internet co website, if you already own registered banks from their company, you can get a preferential pricing to the digital v of Gumi V7 for 8415 yens, which is around 53$/47€
