That sounds...bizarre. Though I'm not sure I understand what was going on when it was/wasn't working.
When it worked, you'd basically downloaded an installer from a website (e.g. Sonicwire) to your computer's HD, then copied it to your external HD, decompressed it, and then installed?
When it doesn't work, I don't have my external drive plugged into my computer, which is where all my installers are located. If I'm installing a bank from that drive, rather than online or from a disk, it wipes all of my V4s.
