Mm, I can understand the basis of the opinion--I think there's sort of the same two lines of thought regarding human artists who use autotune/etc.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. As I mentioned above, even human artists use tools and plugins, either for correction or for artistic purposes. To a certain extent, I would even consider using a vocal synth harder than working with a human singer (i.e., a self-aware, self-correcting being who does lots of things out of the box to improve their own performance), so even if you have issues with human artists using autotune, there should be some greater allowance given in a field where a non-human singer is being used.

At the same time, admittedly from my own beginner perspective, I don't see tools and plugins as any kind of substitute for skill in using a vocal synth. I mean, personally, I try to use different mixing and mastering plugins, but it isn't like I've magically become Mitchie M--the plugins just make the character of the sound that much slightly better.

Finally, and as importantly as anything else--this is a hobby. It's art. The point is to try to enjoy yourself and make something that you think represents what you have in your heart and in your mind. I think skill should be given the respect it deserves, but I also think that the wrong kind of competition and tiering of one person vs. another runs counter to the open, accepting, mutually-supportive culture that we ideally should (and often, at least on VVN, do) have--the culture of people who share knowledge and experience for one another's benefit rather than hoarding it; the culture of people who offer tools, opinions, and collaboration on music, lyrics, art, and other things, sometimes for mutual joy, sometimes for mutual benefit, and often simply because someone needs it; and the culture of people who commiserate one another's difficulties and appreciate one another's successes. Even in the context of the occasional artistic contest, gatekeeping or pitting ourselves against each other is the opposite of what we're trying to do here.

That's like saying that using power tools is cheating when making furniture.
