I've never tried it myself, but Reaper is pretty popular, and I think it's free? Could be misremembering, though.

I recommend Sonar cakewalk by bandlab, it's a full feature DAW but Windows only.
Waveform Free is another DAW but it have "Free" tag mean it's feature-limited version.

Honorable mention is the REAPER, although it is not free but you can get it for like 60$
