I've always heard that this:is her beta design. But never seen any sources for that claim. Does any actually have any? or is this just a wifes-tail?

It's a design from the book vocaloids by Kei (mikus original artist) that showed off some of his art of the crypton vocaloids and featured concept art as well like the design above :)
Yeah, Crypton had the beta designs thing a few years ago, and they revealed the beta designs for Miku, Luka, and the Kagamines.

Miku's beta design has been discussed by Crypton several times, including recently here, she also received official merchandise. A well-cited article on Miku's development is available on the Wiki!
