my deepest darkest secret is that i used to "mix" my covers in windows movie maker. id export the vocals. then id load the instrumental on a video file into windows movie maker. then id import the vocals over it. and voila. i was done

I feel that! Not quite WMM, but my first several covers weren't mixed at all. I just exported the mixdown from V4, slapped it on a video, et voila.

Same here. I didn’t really learn about mixing until halfway through 2020, so my covers from before that are just balancing the volume and exporting it.

when i was very new to covers in 2015-16 i really did rely on plug-and-play a lot, like not tuning stuff myself ESPECIALLY for UTAU as UTAU tuning confused me a lot (it still does lol). and i certainly a few times would credit myself for "tuning" alongside the original tuner even if i only edited a few things.....

and my current sin (not vocaloid specifically but just mixing for covers) is i took some other vocaloid artist's mix preset from a (publically shared) FLP file ages ago and continue to use it to this day and i literally havent changed it up until recently haha.... i am trying to break this habit and make my vocal mixes more unique since this preset really doesnt work with every voice but it "does the job" so for years now, i havent attempted to change it because i in fact know so little about the details to vocal mixing....
