Most of the problems now are just social issues rather than issues. Unfortunately the western community (Vocaloid, UTAU, etc) have a very "I'm right, you're wrong, shut up" kind of mentality that creates a lot of conflict, for one.
Really just talking to people in the community can be a mine field to the point that even just passive advice or light banter can be framed as an attack. Some semi-well known users have been seen sending groups at one person for it.
Hmm, right now the community is also quite "drama addicted", to the point they actually like to recreate situations just to stir up trouble. So you'll find you may encounter a lot of trouble if you use any form of social media. There aren't many "real" problems in the community at the moment, it's just people getting really bored and doing whatever they can.
Unfortunately, the English speaking side of the community has had so many problems that it has sort of become a safe haven for users who got ostracized by their language micro-community due to their bad behavior.
You'll find that a lot of the more respected members of the community actually do NO social interaction and just pump out content, this is why. Opening your mouth for any reason just isn't worth it.
If you want to have the best experience, you may want to restrict your public discussions to forums and stay socially neutral there. Beyond that you should find a tightly knit group (ie, a discord server) you can talk with some people with.
As always, remember that this is the internet and emotions and intentions cannot be understood from text alone. If you have concern, then contact the person in question rather than jumping down their throats because you don't know who you may hurt and how it may affect you.
Also with social media like twitter, remember that the impact of very short and neutral phrases is very small and it's not much of a platform for in-depth and thoughtful communication. It's just a place for people to word vomit without context late at night.
It's very different from the Japanese community in various aspects, but I don't know many details. I do know that some of the larger communities are either invite or request only.
Drama seems to be more contained there and short lived while the western community loves to talk about things publicly for years and reference years old events to hurt users later on.
Keep in mind that the "western" community is quite large. Most consider that to be any part of the community outside of Japan. It may be easier to separate it based on primary language for specific regions when discussing it. Such as North America, Central/South America, UK, Europe, West Asia, East Asia, etc, etc.
