i've asked this question on a different forum site before, so i thought i'd ask it here too. as you know, some fandoms are infamous for being a hot dumpster fire. but there are some really chill fandoms out there who just like the ip and nobody ever gets in a fight. are you in any fandoms that are like that? (or the closest it can get to being like that atleast...)

The fandom where I'm probably the only person. Actual answer, probably the XXL Woofia fandom? It's a relatively new game with a new fandom, and I've been in it almost since the day of the game's release. There isn't (much) fighting, and most people just seem happy to be there. If you want the opposite, I'll have you know I was at one point deep in the Undertale fandom. I got out (mostly), but JEEZ that fandom is a dumpster fire.

The Robots (2005) fandom on Tumblr because it's basically just people who love the movie. I'm not always active there, but it's fun when I am. I should post there more. My answer in 2021-2022 would have been this fandom. I miss how it was in those years. But I also can't complain too much because I don't think it's capable of being as bad as the Sonic fandom.

Re-Animator is one of the coolest fandoms I've ever been in, which is a little ironic considering the source material. Very small, very niche, but has one of the highest concentrations of insanely talented artists and creatives I've ever seen.

Funny how I see this post after watching Robots again for the first time in years a few days ago! The animation has aged really well for a 2005 CGI film. But I'm kinda sad Blue Sky never attempted to make a sequel - a Robots 2 would have been way more interesting than any of the Ice Age sequels.

The fandoms I most appreciate tend to trend older, and make up three categories:
  1. Fandoms that know that their favourite thing hasn't been good in years, but instead of complaining about the quality, they just make memes based on its classic era (and maybe make fun of its current quality). Good examples include The Simpsons and SpongeBob SquarePants. I'd say Sonic the Hedgehog would be in this category if the games hadn't improved and the movies didn't do well, but now I think people aren't so scared to admit they like Sonic anymore?
  2. Fandoms that are based on things very much for adults (not necessarily NSFW, just adult problems only adults can relate to), so the fans manage to avoid the traditional pitfalls of fandoms by not indulging in clichés you'd see in more teenage circles, like shipping. Best example I can think of is King of the Hill.
  3. Fandoms that involve properties that finished years ago, so now you mainly just find people who really like the thing they're into. Robots was already mentioned, but another example I can think of is the Mother series, since people are just happy to talk about the stories and characters. And pester Nintendo about a Western release for Mother 3 lol.

The Mother fandom is just happy that the series exists at all. They really want a Mother 3 Localization, but not as badly since the fan translation.

I just avoid the cursed parts of the fandoms I enjoy. (Mainly gacha games and none of them are super cursed, it's just there are always weird people out there and drama. You just gotta know where/whom to avoid)

CITY/Nichijou fandom. Not too big (I'd say it's a medium size?) but even at its size it's surprisingly decent. Off topic but I used to be in the Azumanga fandom, and all i can say that it leaned towards the "edgy 4chan" side at times.

At least on Reddit, it did. I haven't interacted with the fandom elsewhere, but what i can tell you is that after mid-2024 is when the reddit side of fanbase entered a nosedive.
r/azumangaposting is especially bad. You cannot go 10 mins without seeing humor that was straight out of Instagram Reels ("aryan" edits, nazi/racist jokes...)

Also, I found a reddit post where someone posted a 4chan screenshot claiming "Zoomers ruined Azumanga" and the evidence within that 4chan post was a clearly faked Wikipedia screenshot claiming that Kimura was a controversial character in the most AI-genned way possible. When I brought up the faked wikipedia article (lack of links, edit history), all OP said was "This isn’t even Wikipedia dude this is 4chan and it isn’t fake this is a real blogger, I don’t use ai"

www.reddit.com/r/azudaioh/comments/1pnq8os

Yet another reason to stay out of the azumanga fanbase and Reddit as a whole.

Crazy to hear this, considering that throughout the 2010s, the Azumanga fandom was fairly quiet because its initial cultural moment in the Western anime fandom in the 2000s had died down. I'm disappointed that the fascist side of Gen Z and Alpha are stinking the atmosphere of the fandom up, but not exactly surprised - anime has long been strangely vulnerable to attracting white supremacist clowns, and current social media is accelerating this. (They're already wrecking the Nightcore fandom on YouTube).

Reddit in general is a cesspit for both right-wing and left-wing fandom bullshit, oddly enough. If you're not "pure" enough in values for either side, you'll get trolled right out of subreddits.
