Now that I think about it, might be a kind of "anniversary/history celebration video" about Vocaloid: the title "daisy bell" reminds of "daisy", which was the codename of first project before Vocaloid (around 1998-1999 if I remember correctly). And the color filters of those images are like '90-early 2000s digital tape recorded video style:qingxian_lili:

Kanru's walls
Having seen the resurgence of Teto and Neru, I've decided to put together my semi-serious thoughts on who among our legacy characters has the potential for a comeback of their own. Of course, the characters listed still have a strong fanbase and a good number of new songs: we're talking TikTok-popular here. I theorise that to return to the spotlight, a vocal synth needs three things: EASE OF USE, VOCAL NOVELTY, and ICONIC HAIR.

Ease of use: The vocal synth must be on an affordable, easy-to-use engine with a good attachment rate* among producers.

Vocal novelty: The vocal synth must have a quirked up voice that's nigh-impossible to confuse with anyone else. They must sound at least somewhat weird. If they are realistic, then they must be unique not just for a vocal synth, but for vocalists in general.

Iconic hair: Their hair needs to be a distinct colour not shared with any currently-popular characters. It must be a cool hairstyle that's easy to draw and recognisable in silhouette. The character must be impossible to mistake for anyone else, even without their default outfit.

Gumi:
Verdict: NO / Reason: VOCAL NOVELTY

Sadly I predict it's over for Gumi. Praised during Vocaloid2 for sounding more natural and realistic than her competitors, the features that originally made her stand out now plonk her solidly in the most competitive category of natural, flexible contemporary feminine voices. Despite her nailing EASE OF USE with a SynthV update, the decision not to capture Megumi's full range of expressiveness puts her at a disadvantage against SynthV's many other Nice Realistic Singer offerings. This leaves the Green Character space dangerously vacant (now's your chance, Ryuto :ryuuto_lili:)

Kaito:

Verdict: NO...but potentially YES / Reason: EASE OF USE

Very simple: any old voicebank that hasn't had a recent update is much harder to use than modern vocal synths. However, Kaito has the advantage of being one of our few iconic male characters, and I think Naoto Fuga could pull off a unique vocal performance on a variety of modern engines: if updated, I foresee a potential future for Kaito with the popular kids.

Gackpo:

Verdict: NO / Reason: EASE OF USE

Same as before on the update front, combined with extra hurdles of Gackt's one thousand million crimes, and a design that's more annoying to draw. Under different circumstances, his voice could be quite spectacular, but I don't think that's enough in the modern era.

Meiko:

Verdict: NO / Reason: EASE OF USE, ICONIC HAIR

Ironically Meiko's voicetype is very unique and has been popular when given to other characters, proving she unfairly suffers from a permanent Normal Brown Hair debuff. Luckily she'll always get the Piapro Character bump, so us Meiko fans will stay fed.

Luka:

Verdict: NO / Reason: EASE OF USE, VOCAL NOVELTY

As well as being extremely difficult to use right now (compared to other options), Luka's soft-feminine vocal category has become very saturated. Tragically, this means that soft voices are popular, and Luka could have potentially surfed that trend to success had she a timely update. Her advantage as a bilingual vocalist has also been thoroughly lost thanks to cross-lingual synthesis. In Luka's absence, producers have been driven to seek out other options. I fear she's lost her niche to newer characters.

IA:

Verdict: NO / Reason: VOCAL NOVELTY

I think IA could still be moderately popular if she had an update that perfectly captured Lia's voice, but having already had some good updates and still losing ground, it looks like Lia's not quite enough to grab people in the era of many polished, realistic voices. She could go the Mai/Ayame route and find commercial success with professional musicians in the anime industry.

Flower:

Verdict: YES...with a few caveats

Flower just needs a voicebank for a slightly newer engine with a slightly more cohesive design and she's golden. Her abrasive voice is very unique, her androgynous/goth vibe stands out visually. cFlower unfortunately nerfed these elements - perhaps a V6 could get her back on track? I believe there is both a gap, and demand, for an alternative rocker girl in the vocal synth fandom.

Other random popularity analyses:

Anri: Has vocal novelty and ease of use, does not have iconic hair
Yukari: Has iconic hair, does not have vocal novelty, ease of use okay but locked to JP only
Kafu: Has iconic hair, has vocal novelty, falling behind on ease of use
Rana: Has iconic hair, has vocal novelty, lacks ease of use
Miki: Has ease of use, lost vocal novelty, red is now taken (dang)
Eleanor: Has iconic hair, lacks ease of use (ease of buying, specifically), vocal novelty had potential. I theorise she could have been the 'white one' under different circumstances.
Yi Xi: Had vocal novelty, had ease of use, achieved popularity once given iconic hair (let's go Vimalion!)

I'd be happy to be proven wrong on any of these. One of my favourite things about the vocal synth community is its ability to surprise.

*For those not in marketing, 'attachment rate' refers to the percentage of people who already own the software.

I... Ok?

I do agree with most of those!

Gumi feels like her time in the spotlight is over, she had her time back in V2/V3.
Kaito... Ignoring my large personal bias, I do feel like if he just got a V6/good NT update, he would be SET for a popularity resurge. He's an ICONIC voice, one with a recognizable character attached (and cool hair), but the fact that he's limited to V3 (old) and V1 (REALLY old, barely available for purchase, hard af to use) is the only thing keeping him held back from his renaissance. But until then, no.
Gackupo is not likely to get a resurgence. Even ignoring his VP's... questionable decisions, he's still stuck in V4, and like you said, his design is COMPLICATED. He had his time with Gumi in V2, now it's time to give it up.
Meiko... I love Meiko, but yeah, she's not coming back. Her voice is kinda unique, but her still being stuck in V3 and V1 (see kaito above) is a killer, and I don't see an update giving her more popularity. And as the final nail in the coffin, her design is not as flashy as the other, newer characters. Love ya, but no.
Luka is sadly probably not making it. As you said, her Bilingual "gimmick" is now null and void with cross-lingual synthesis, her voice type is a dime a dozen, and her voicebanks are either V2 (old af and from what ive heard, choopy/hard to use), v4x (evec and a LARGE tonal shift), or SP (miku 2.0). I do like her, but I think she's dead.
IA I have no opinions on. I personally think she'll be fine, but take that with a jar of salt.
flower has a LARGE chance for a new birth. Her voice just needs a V6 or the like (NOT ci flower) and a design that leans HARD into goth, and she'll be fine. Even without that, v4 flower is still pretty popular.

Oof, as much as I love Gumi and like Luka, I do think they've been surpassed by other banks that do their niches far better or with more tonal variety. I'm still surprised Internet Co. never gave Gumi SynthV a Power bank, considering that the most common complaint with her SynthV is the lack of power in her voice compared to her V6 (and even her V3 and V4).

Kaito could see a resurgence if/once Crypton finally get round to updating their other characters to NT and V6, since he's one of the few iconic male voices. Meiko was always the overlooked Cryptonloid, even during the V1 and V2 eras, so I wouldn't necessarily be upset if even an NT/V6 update didn't help her popularity. (Shu-t is probably the only producer that's been carrying the Meiko torch for an insanely long time).

Another issue with Gakupo is Gackt has expressed his dislike for AI, so it's unlikely we'll ever see an AI version of his Vocaloid. (Which is a shame because a V6 or SynthV Gakupo with cross-lang would be amazing!).

IA is getting a V6 next month, so it'll be interesting to see if she picks up in popularity next year!

I agree that Flower could regain traction if she was ported to V6 - Ci Flower didn't get the best reaction from the fandom, so a V6 version that improved her best qualities while getting rid of her flaws (her "cotton mouth" sound is a big one for me) would probably be a hit. Saying that, I think Chis-A may have stolen some of Flower's thunder, since they have similar voice types? (Chis-A is far less aggressive and more oriented to softer rock and pop, but still).
