What do you mean by "makes you pause before you can edit"? I don't understand, I thought that you could edit while it's running? Or maybe that's the case in the V4 editor proper. I don't know, I use Piapro v4x.
It's not like that in Piapro iirc (it's been a very long time since I've needed to ever use it), but actual Vocaloid editors used to make you pause playback before you could do anything. Like I can't edit while playing the vocals back. V5 made it so its like SV where you can edit while playing, but it'll need to render again (while being slower than SV). The Piapro editor is a bit different than the actual V3/V4 in how it works.
Most harmonies follow the principles of music theory, with each singer singing part of a chord. So the more you understand about chords, the easier identifying harmonies will be! If you aren't already, I recommend learning the basic chords and intervals of a scale.

When I can't identify harmonies, I will use simple music theory to invent my own with thirds, fifths, and octaves. Even if they aren't 100% accurate to the original, they won't sound dissonant or 'wrong'.
