It's fortunate a new team was willing to take over, or that would have been a verrry awkward announcement haha.

In a way, Maghni AI in its original form met the fate their maligned dissenters predicted: it died, and was abandoned. For some time now, its corpse has been Weekend At Bernie'd around by third-party developers who refused to let that unfortunate situation kill their dreams of releasing for a commercial engine. Time will tell if they're able to give Maghni AI a full resurrection.

This part was very surprising to me. I wonder how the process works without the full engine code in-hand... 😓

Regardless, I hope everything works out for them. Even if, unfortunately, currently this is panning out similarly to a 'classic kickstarter story'.

It's good that there's so much passion in it though. This will very likely be a *very* different project than their prior idea, (which was very high-scope), but I wonder how it will develop anyway.

Correct me if I am wrong, so based on what I know, somehow the previous developers who left the development of Maghni AI (perhaps including some major developers) have somehow bring along with them the entirety (or maybe a part of core functionalities that they developed) of the Maghni AI base code (perhaps due to disagreement of transferring ownership and so on), so the current team of five is working their best to reconstruct a stable replacement architecture (which includes engine stability, core functionality, and voice colors etc) for the all new Maghni AI.

If that is true, then no wonder the newest demo sounds a little bit different compared to the previous ones. I wish all the best for them to recover from the challenges that they are facing and could produce an entire newer, better, and more powerful version of Maghni AI. I personally believe that those who are persistent in continuing their projects despite their past difficulties or delays will eventually see through the end, although the result might be entirely different but certainly be even better than before.

despite maghni still being worked on and despite it being likely that it'll get finished at some point (and it's not at all a dig on the current team, very very proud of them for still working hard) it's hard not to feel stung knowing that something big has happened behind the scenes... like, it's a weird feeling with a very 'for fans by fans' project like this when we have "notable" figures from the community thrown into question because... well, how these trusted team members would let the remains of the project struggle with keeping it afloat, i guess.

i've been following maghni since the VERY very first announcement and specifically was just wanting to see everyone working hard on it succeed, and i do still really wish the best for everyone still working on it, but i really can't imagine the stress of trying to fulfil all of the expectations people had for launch when there seems to be a lot of things outside of direct control of the remaining members.

i will say though, when i first saw the tweet posted here, i thought 'oh, shit, it's completely over isn't it'... thank god

I'm genuinely not surprised this project has struggled to the point that the new dev team are almost about to discard the previous code and start again. I can still remember when Maghni was originally announced and almost everyone on here (including myself) gave the project a side-eye because of its already-lofty goals, knowing the previous track record we've seen with vocal synth fan projects. (Namely professional voicebanks going up in flames, but still).

I stopped following Maghni for a while and seeing this pop up today sure was a shock.. I wonder how it got to this point since I remember all of the high hopes the community had from the announcement and stuff.. I wonder why so many things go wrong with Vocatone projects (Yohioloid being discontinued, the entirety of Oliver's development, etc)

Can anyone post a twitlonger or unroll or something? I deleted Twitter so I can't read the replies to the thread
Hope this helps! Mirror link via xcancel (Nitter).

The most interesting part of this situation has been seeing the current Maghni AI devs doing the PR-statement equivalent of desperately blinking in Morse code: "It's VocaTone's fault! It's VocaTone's fault!" in the subtext of all their responses. Not knowing what went down behind the scenes, I'm not inclined to take sides atm. The circumstances of VocaTone leaving could have been sympathetic (e.g. a family tragedy) - as strange as it sounds, there are some things more important than vocal synths. :')

I’m a top backer who donated $2,000 towards the campaign as an individual, as well as $300 in donations made directly to Vocatone outside of the campaign.

I have a lot of (unfortunately not super positive) things to make clear about the current state of Maghni AI from my perspective as a backer and highly invested individual.
  1. Vocatone essentially abandoned the current developers and did not pay them what they were due. It has been multiple years now that developers have had funds withheld from them. This can easily be confirmed by just looking at the timeline of how long some developers have been on this project (over 4 years).
  2. Vocatone’s last update was on their Blog on 8/17/25 discussing Backer Rewards, their last public post on social media was 4/1/25. They have not set any dates, nor made any clarifications on how soon Backer Rewards will be fulfilled or even how much of the merchandise is actually made. Merchandise such as the Olirondo comics, an additional purchase you could make, have not been shown.
  3. There are only 5 publicly known developers on the project now.
Cinna: Director (previously Co-Director)

Cocoa/Caleb: Backend Development

Tart: Library Development + Linguistics

Aku-P: GUI Development + Branding

Natalia: Previous Director (she has taken a step back for the time being, but has not left the project)

This list is not currently available on the website but you can find it on previous versions of the website.

Bottom line, Vocatone has been silent, and has provided virtually no transparency about where funds have gone. They have yet to resolve issues with anyone, developers and backers alike, even after multiple months of attempted contact.

Current developers are likely under strict NDAs and cannot speak publicly about a lot of what is happening. I don’t even personally know the extent of third party involvement in Maghni AI. I’m certain there is a lot we still have yet to know about.

To lighten things up, I DO want to make it clear that the current team is EXTREMELY dedicated to getting Maghni AI released in any form possible, even open-sourcing their work if needed. None of the work which has gone into Maghni AI’s development has been a waste. They are doing as much as they can with their personal time and funds to get things working. Maghni AI is not “dead.”

Just another thing to note since I think it’s worthwhile to keep in mind the original promises and goals of Vocatone’s campaign. The majority of funds were supposed to go to “Programming Fees” aka. Development. The campaign raised double of their original goal.

I understand that circumstances shift, reality sets in, timeline changes, funds get moved around. I personally hold no issue with the extension of timelines or amount of time being taken by the team (previously OR currently).

What I don’t understand how we have yet to receive a concrete explanation on where the $40,000 went and why all of it HAD to go towards physical merchandise. At some point it’s just untrustworthy/unethical business practices.

**Apologies for not merging things in advance but thank you to whoever did! I’m really not familiar with forum etiquette

ANOTHER RELATED UPDATE:

We have a Blog Post

This update appears to paint Barham Karim, the original AI Developer, as the sole proprietor of the fund mishandling, and put the sole responsibility on Misbah Studios as well.

I don’t want to say much on the matter until we have confirmation of this.

It’s good to see forward progress and more transparency from Vocatone.

A FINAL NOTE!!!! and final edit until further updates.. (I seriously hope there are only good ones.)

It’s 9PM and I’m tired as hell, but it appears I received communication from Vocatone from a personal email I sent them only today.

I’ll leave things off with an open invitation, if you are a backer who tried reaching out to Vocatone over the last few months PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Literally, email me if you have to, contact me on my socials, whatever works.

I have heard of MULTIPLE people at this point who did not receive any communication from Vocatone even after multiple emails, and I want to see full confirmation that I’m not the only one being paid attention to.
