VOCALOID Why did you buy the vocaloids you have?

I bought Daina because I was very excited for her when she was first released, I love engloids and when I first heard her I loved her voice. I loved how clear her pronunciation was, and she seemed less stiff and nasally than Cyber Diva, who was the other engloid I was thinking of getting at the time.
Miki was a gift but I put her on my wishlist because I love how cute and fun her voice is. It's also very versatile imo. Plus I had used her trial before and liked tuning her.

How about yall?

Mayu - I think part of it was that her trial was my first experience using the editor as well as that I loved a lot of songs on the album they released to promo her. So, excellent marketing by Exit Tunes, if I'm being honest (also had a soft spot for yanderes years ago)

Avanna - I think it was partially because people said she was beginner friendly and partially I liked her Celtic and/or fantasy theme. I also just liked her tone best out of the available Engloids at the time (I missed my chance to buy Miriam so Avanna it was... I love you Avanna don't look at me like that)

Ruby - I think a lot of it was I was a fan of Misha's UTAU work for a long time beforehand. Plus I really liked her main production sample (I downloaded and put it on repeat A Lot rofl) and I hoped that one day I too would be able to tune her like that (*hides tears because the dream is still so far away*)

V3 Lily - I started liking Lily as a sort of rooting-for-an-underdog thing when she was a newer V2, and then when she got an updated bank with a tone I loved even more I had to have her myself.

Cyber Songman - Part of what pushed me to actually buy him was Yamaha did a sale/promo at one point where they were giving away a bunch of job plugins to people who bought a Vocaloid, and I found his voice really appealing so I used it as an excuse to buy him (don't even use them, I think it really was just an excuse XD)

Luka V4X (almost forgot to add her oops) - I bought her during that period when Cryptonloids were on sale and they were giving away free mixing tools with a purchase. I mainly chose her over the Kagamines because while I was debating which one to get I got an idea for a Luka x Lily song rofl

I went for Una cuz she instantly became my favorite after hearing her most popular demo song, I was already using UTAU at the time so I knew what type of vociebanks I liked and she was everything I was looking for in a voicebank! From a technical standpoint she was an objectively a great quiality and she was promoted as a beginner friendly vb which was like....ideal for me! Even after using some more vocaloids with trials I still find her to be exceptionally smooth and expressive! Such a lovely vb! :una_rylitah:

:leon_lili: LEON: The first Vocaloid voice I fell in love with. Something about his tone and slight "charm" to the voice was interesting to me. I personally enjoyed using older technology, as if to say old technology can still be used in beneficial ways. He was the only voicebank I owned for a good while, but I enjoyed learning more about the Vocaloid Editor that way. It's interesting when V1 is the first Editor you use - you can see how Vocaloid has grown from it, but surely it's not the same without those Resonance parameters the first editor had.
LEON served as a gateway for me into using Vocaloid. I messed around a lot with his voice to get an idea of how I could use his voice; it made me enjoy him even more.

:lola_lili: LOLA: Now, a few years back, Zero-G had some kind of sale going on, before they announced they were going to retire the V1 voicebanks from their store, that being LEON, LOLA, and MIRIAM.
I can't recall how long it was ago before the announcement, maybe a year, but there was also a bonus: when I bought LOLA, I also got sound samples. I was excited! Another Vocaloid to my collection, and I'm glad I purchased her. I became more attached to her voice. Like LEON, I messed around to get an idea of what her voice sounded like. At the time, I didn't know I'd use her voice years later to help create the song Invisible Being. I love using the Vocaloid1 Editor, and I wish I did so more.

:miku_lili: Hatsune Miku (V2): Now, let's get to the Miku part. At this point, I was much busier with things like school, so I didn't use Vocaloid as much unfortunately. But, I still made it a goal to work on music, specifically for the future.
There was a good auction going on at the time, so I decided now would be the time to finally pick her up.
Like with LEON, I wanted to use "old technology", as that's also what some of the most well-known producers first used: V2. I believe V3 was already out at the time.
And I was excited (again w, I'm gonna use that word a lot). I absolutely love Miku, and enjoy her voice. I can't describe it, it has some sort of cute, robotic-like charm to it - you know it's not real, but it's better that way. She's here for you, she doesn't need to be real.

:miku_winter_lili: Hatsune MIku (Append): A bit of a similar story, but I absolutely love Miku's Dark Append, and knew I wanted to use it for potential future projects. I picked it up and began messing around a bit with the voices, and realized each one of them could be used in effective ways. Despite being the same character, each voice felt unique, as if bringing a different personality. I find "personality" can be a beneficial thing to bring into songs, so I'm glad to discover each voice could be used well.

:yukari_onn_lili: Yuzuki Yukari V4 (Jun and Onn): Yukari's Natural and Whisper voicebank. Yukari was on a major sale at the time, and I began considering picking up another Vocaloid. Upon consideration, I realized how effective Yukari's vocals are in some songs - especially ones that interested me. She's a Vocaloid that's well known and is up in popularity and, is certainly, a gamer like me. I thought her natural vocals could be used well, but upon hearing more about her whisper voicebank, I fell in love. It reminded me of Miku's Dark append, and I decided it would be a good investment, especially considering the sale.
As with the other voices, upon use I've gotten to "know her more" and love her voice even more so. She even comes with some exVoice files (a lot!), that made me happier with my purchase.

:yuki_lili: Yuki Kaai V4: I purchased her alongside Yukari Jun and Onn. She was on sale, and for an amazing price too. I put some thought to this, as I had also thought before of picking up Yuki. Her childish, innocent vocals could make for something intriguing, I believe. Perhaps (and hopefully) unique.
After much thought, I decided to purchase her voicebank. It could very well be the last time she was on sale after all (I don't think it was, but I still think I got a good price either way).
I'm eager to see what I could create with Yuki's voice! Her childish voice could make for some heartwarming music. I don't have access to something like a kid's choir, so Yuki may be the way to go then!

:dex_lili: Dex: Ah, Dex. This purchase was for Christmas - on Christmas day even! He's a Christmas gift for me. I picked him up just last year, again at a time where projects were rather busy.
But I had been considering Dex for a while at the time. It would be another English vocal, specifically one for a newer engine even, and also give me another male voice. On top of that, I was convinced Dex's vocals could work pretty good with rock, so I thought he would be a good voicebank to add to my collection.
I wish I could use him more, it would help me enjoy him even more, I already know. Hopefully as projects die down and I have more music-related ones, I can really get a good grasp of his voice and love him even more than I do now. But, I'm happy with Dex, I'm glad I got him. I'm eager to see what I might create with Dex too. I was using his voice I think a week ago, and I began getting an idea of some of the potentially unique ways I could use him

Bonus: :gumi_lili: Megpoid Talk: I believe Megpoid Talk was on sale when I picked her up. I thought it would be neat to pick up a talking synthesizer, and this one even came with two other generic voices - a basic male and female. (I got a funny idea that these voices actually ARE Gumi, she's just good at imitating.)
I became interested in getting talk synthesizers thanks to watching Let's Plays. I thought Megpoid Talk could create a VSQ from what you created, and I honestly just figured it out - I thought this would help with creating talk videos.
My drawback though is it seems like Megpoid has quite a bit of licensing tied in to her, and I don't know if that even includes just using a VSQ you made with the software.

:rin_smile_lIlI::len_smile_lili: Rin and Len V4x - I wanted to finally buy my first Vocaloid, and, although I heavily considered getting Miku V4x for my Vocaloid, a friend convinced me to Rin and Len since they're essentially a two for one. I had never heard their V4x (I'd only ever heard their Act 2 at the time) before, but I ended up getting them because I just liked Rin and Len a lot. I was also sold because they came with a DAW, some sample instruments, and Piapro. One of the best decisions I've made!

:mayu_lili: Mayu - I can't remember why I exactly I bought her, especially considering I used to strongly dislike her. I think her voice had just grown on me after listening to A Lie and a Stuffed Animal, so I wanted to buy her since she has such a nice voice.

:miku_lili: Miku V4x - She was actually a gift to me! I wanted her because partly she's Miku (at some point or another, I'm gonna want to get the most popular Vocaloid), and because I had her trial a while back and had some songs that I'd never finished with her! (To this day I still need to finish Remote Controller with her and Teto.) I also really wanted to try out her dark and solid vbs; I'd heard dark in the song Glow and thought it was a human singing at first, so I wanted to use such a lovely voicebank.
(Oh, and she used to be my favorite before Rin and Len stole that spot from her! XD)

I used to dislike her because of the whole "yandere" thing (I don't like Yanderes very much and strongly disliked them at the time), and wasn't initially fond of her voice. (I actually disliked Tei for similar reasons as well.)
I ended up putting the yandere aspect aside, because it seemed like a silly reason to dislike a perfectly good vocal.

I've wanted most of the Vocaloids I have for a very long time, so the technical answer is "I got a job and finally had the money to spend since I live at home". As for specifics:

I bought the VOCALOID4 Editor with the $100 I got from a casino on Spring Break last year. (I suck at gambling, my luck is terrible, so my mom was like "Just keep it, you've earned it.")

:oliver_lili:Oliver: Of the Vocaloids I wanted most, he was the cheapest by a large margin. I'd just started working, so my first paycheck wasn't very big, but I had enough to nab him! (It was also partially fueled by spite: I'd read a whole lot of threads saying "Beginners should stay FAR away from Oliver, he's a pain to work with". In hindsight, they were right. But I'm still glad I did it anyway, because he taught me the importance of patience when working in the program!)

:rin_smile_lIlI::len_smile_lili:Rin/Len V4X: I've wanted them since I was in the seventh grade. I asked for their V2s and Appends at Christmas for three years straight. My first big paycheck came in last May, and May 18th is my birthday, so they were my birthday present to myself!

:miku_lili: Miku V4X: I've always loved Miku, and I knew I wanted her after I got Rin and Len. So I got her the following month.

:meiko_lili::kaito_smile_lili:Meiko/Kaito V3: I took a break from buying Vocaloids after Miku, but I'd been putting in a lot of extra hours at work, so it occurred to me I could, in theory, get them both at the same time. And that's what I did. I got so excited at the thought of getting TWO Vocaloids in the mail at the same time that I couldn't sit still, so one of my supervisors told me to go run laps around the building. They were understanding and encouraging towards my obsession (and I miss them so much...)

:gackpo_smile_lili:Gakupo V4: Gakupo was my favorite Vocaloid when I was a teenager (I'd always mark breaths in my sheet music as "SDG", standing for "Sexy Drunken Gakupo," a reference to the song "Breathe"... I thought I was clever, dammit.), so I figured I'd ask for him for Christmas, since his boxed Complete set is... pricey. And my family came through! My mom and dad, who aren't on the best of terms, got together to figure out where to buy him as cheaply as possible, and he was my only Christmas present, but I've made it known that it's the best Christmas present I've ever received, so I really do hope they know how grateful I am.

:kiyoteru_lili:Kiyoteru V4 Rock: Actually, I didn't much care for Kiyoteru. I got him because I found him for what I assumed was cheap on eBay. In hindsight, if I'd waited like two months, I could have found BOTH of his V4s for not much more than I got his Rock VB for, but que sera sera.

:kiyoterunatural_lili:Kiyoteru V4 Natural: I can't just buy a single VB for a Vocaloid. I've gotta have 'em all.

:luka_lili:Luka V4X: I got her this summer after a long hiatus from buying Vocaloids. Someone was selling her for $140, so I took them up on that offer!

:gumi_lili:Gumi V4: She was the final of the Vocaloids I'd wanted since I was a teen, and buying her at long last felt so gratifying. And then three weeks later she's on sale for 40% off after I've already dropped $200 on her. The patience I'd learned from dealing with Oliver had worn off and left me a fool in a man's body. Oh well.

:dex_lili::daina_lili::prima_lili::tonio_lili::avanna_lili:Dex, Daina, Prima, Tonio, and Avanna: They were on sale. That's it. That's literally the only reason I got them. Actually, I've always had a soft spot for Tonio's voice, and the others have very nice voices as well, so I don't regret nabbing them in the least!

Honestly? Good for you for going after a Vocaloid you like despite being told that it's not beginner friendly. Starting at a higher difficulty often times provides important insight on things you'd have never noticed if you worked with something easier.
(I personally learned this lesson with Rin and Len's V4x's. They might not be as hard to use as their earlier VBs, but they were still challenging for someone who didn't know the first thing about using Vocaloid.)

I got Mayu because after years of being a Vocaloid fan I just really wanted to have one myself and make some covers. I looked all over amazon jp and back then Mayu was the cheapest (I think only 60€?) and also one of the only ones that could be shipped to my country. So I researched a bit to see if I even like her voice that much. And well, as you can see I fell in love with her. Even more so as soon as I got her. I don't know but to me getting her as my first Vocaloid and using her in my first bad tries with the program made me feel like I have a special bond with her haha. It's just.. a different kind of admiration you get for the voice as soon as you work with it instead of just listening to stuff others made.

After that I got one of the last physical copies of Lola as a present from a really good friend of mine and I'm super happy that I have her.

I bought Miku V4X simply because Miku has always been number 1 for me. I had been a fan for quite some time and I was deeply in love with her voice. The software was pretty much an impulse buy, I didn't have grand plans to make music before that, but at Magical Mirai 2018 I ended up buying the software package after I had passed by Sonicwire's booth several times while roaming the exhibition.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to invest much time and effort into making music, and since I'm happy with having just her, I haven't considered buying more vocaloids.

I got Cyber Songman after years of being a vocaloid fan because he's my favorite and he's so special to me!! I bought his V4 bundle(this was before V5 was a thing)
Nana was more of an impulse buy, I tried her trial pretty soon after getting songman and I liked her range and thought she would work well as a high female vocal...she gives me a lot of trouble but I'm happy to have her!
I bought Avanna because she was on sale at one point earlier this year. I wasn't able to get her on sale (had to buy her from bigfishaudio and not zero-G because of bank account shenanigans), but I don't regret it-shes a great vocaloid for her price.

I'm probably going to end up having more Zero-G loids than any other kind because of how many sales they have. A huge reason I bought Daina is because they had her on sale to celebrate her release!!

Do you have her english voicebank vb or japanese vb/s?? Also this is the first time I heard someone say Nana gives them trouble, how is she troublesome to you? Just curious ^^
Oh I forgot to say, I just have Nana V4 English. I find her pronunciation a lot to deal with (like how she says Tch for every t sound), but I'm still not very good at vocaloid in general :gackpo_lili:
