VV always goes a bit dead when no big news is announced for a while. Also, forums are nowhere near as popular as they used to be, at least compared to 20 years ago. Even 15 years ago, VocaloidOtaku used to be really active; then social media platforms like Tumblr, Reddit and Instagram started stealing the users who would have hung out on forums otherwise.

I thought the VVN or vocal synth community has been like this since long time ago?
I'd say super-active discussions started dropping after 2013 or so. I do recall 2014 being the point I noticed activity on VocaloidOtaku started to decrease, away from shitposts towards more thoughtful conversations - not necessarily a bad thing, but it did reflect the trends I've already mentioned with social media. VO's death in 2018 directly led to the creation of VV, because some of us on VO wanted to carry on with forum-based discussions without the baggage VO had gained over the years.

I think what's also helped VVN survive the current social media-dominated landscape is that we can post tutorials and troubleshooting advice for vocal synths, which isn't easy to do on other platforms (except Reddit and maybe YouTube if a video is necessary to demonstrate or fix an issue). If you need help with something, it's easy to either track down an old post discussing the issue, or write up a new post asking for advice.

That has been on my mind as well. In my view, any form of engagement contributes to keeping forums active—particularly tutorials, guides, and troubleshooting threads. You don’t usually find good guides on random place. That’s what makes vocal synth forums special and what keeps them going.

The reason i prefer it this way because, when thing start to get attention and become super-active, almost every time thing go down hill so fast... and we already have so many example in the past.

Yup, I prefer somewhat dead forums, but peaceful ones.

the thing about this forum for me is despite not posting a lot its kind of the only place i find decent news about vocal synths. there isnt a single place i go that rather consistently has new threads for tracking news on a new voice or whatever. forums are far more organized and easier to navigate for that information. reddit is the closest "modern" social forum but it is lacking in that subreddits dont have categories, some lack flairs for organization, and a lot of the subjects are still too niche for the subs to even me useful anyways. i have never found any of the vocal synth subs to be particularly useful.

imo i find this forum to be more of a useful website rather than a place i expect the same social activity as a place like twitter, reddit, discord, or amino. i dont really need VVN to feel like a social site when i come here for the news, and the discussions (and that too. my god, i much prefer having critical discussions on a forum like this than in the replies of twitter lol).

I think places like this are the last bastions of independence in the world of centralized, corporate internet. It's good that they exist, even if they aren't as popular as they used to be - though honestly this place feels pretty active to me, I especially admire how some people here post every single piece of news in the community lol. Indexability and searchability are important too, a lot of information nowadays is gatekept in Discord servers, which are neither of these.

these XenForo forum software must be expensive to keep. isn't it a monthly rate? I remember I drempt of using something like this for my site and then looked at the price and suddenly making my own forum backend seemed much more appealing.
