I don't keep up with utau popularity at all so this is a lovely surprise how well she did already! I am also very interested in how the AI vb will turn out just from a technical standpoint like do they train it from tuned songs?

I'm happy this has been such a success - Missile made a comment on how the previous crowdfunds for Rei basically came down to the wire and he's relieved this was funded so quickly in comparison, but Rei's popularity has exploded in recent years and she's genuinely one of the most recognizable synths of today (quick aside: I cosplay at conventions and I'm almost never recognized, but I got stopped so often when I cosplayed Rei at Otakon a few months ago lol).

Super happy for him, and for Rei, and I'm excited to hear the results!

does her low range sound like teto to anyone else or am i just tweakin

also, utau getting turned into vocaloids is, in general, exciting,,,, but what is the point of this? that's not a rhetorical question btw, i'm genuinely asking, why would anyone pay for this instead of using her utau vb?

it's not more realistic (and it can't be, bc she's a completely artificial voice + her whole appeal is that she's robotic), it sounds. buzzier. especially in the high range. kinda giving pre-ai cevio

I guess it's easier/will be easier to learn and use than UTAU? Other than that I'm honestly not sure. There might be some slight differences in tone usually, but with Adachi I honestly can't see that happening. I'll still buy Adachi V6 because I really like her, but yeah there doesn't seem to be many improvements so to speak. I guess we'll just have to wait and see! I kinda hear her low range sounding like Teto...

I think a lot of you are really underestimating Vocaloid's brand power here. A lot of people (especially on the JP side) won't bother using UTAU even if they like her as a character, but they will buy and use V6 even if there's no big upgrade to her sound quality just because it's much more accessible and easy to use despite the financial hurdle.

She doesn't have to sound any different, or even better. She just has to be easy to understand how to use, and usable. UTAU really isn't that for a lot of people - SV Teto has more than proven this, and it's not solely because she sounds more human or realistic (though it was a big help in getting people to initially give her a chance. But it's very clear that SV Teto is far more popular and used than her UTAU banks are or ever were, and those are still free for everyone).

I agree! I think there's a significant market for straight UTAU-ports, if done well. If Teto UTAU's samples were made available as a concatenative bank in SynthV for example, it would cause an absolute storm. Breaking into that market is probably the most astute decision Yamaha has made.

I've probably mentioned this before, but there was a big Japanese poll asking whether people preferred Teto UTAU or Teto SynthV - and UTAU won by a landslide. This suggests that SynthV is getting more usage because it's just so much easier that it outweighs price and tone preference. (But as a caveat, I heard UTAU has a stricter licence, which would have some influence too - I'm not sure how much.)

However, a good UTAU port is easier said than done. UTAU has a lot of depth, and attempts like SV1's Renri didn't match the original. To fully meet people's needs, it would also have to be compatible with crosslang and autotune, as these are the two major usability advantages of AI. That's got to be a technical challenge, one I'm curious how Adachi AI will tackle.

We're hitting the cusp of the flaws we fought to remove becoming stylistically desirable, as happens in all art forms. Adachi Rei is proof that a commercial engine who invests in "retro" robotic vocals is a smart one!

Yamaha hasn't done much to impress me on the technical front this era, I'm interested to see if they'll pull this off. Too much additional buzziness and Rei will lose her signature tone (not the type of roboticness you want), fail to match UTAU's customisability and power users won't migrate. There are many things that can go wrong, but it's a goldmine.
