  • I felt like Luka's users are reducing each years, maybe others non AI voicebank suffers the same issue too? I don't know much about vbs popularity, maybe i have to start watching vocaloid ranking again.

Talking about sound is quite subjective but in the use case, Luka's is like an odd balls among all crypton family with questionable gimmick like EVEC. Yes, she sound unique and no other voicebanks is like her but this apply to other banks too.

Her voicebank is full of issues like inconsistency of phonemes editing, inconsistency of vibrato, lack of smoothness, glitches, audio warping, weird noise in certain performance, excessive fundamental tone, rather poor optimal range handling, poor harmonics handling etc etc. This just scratch only surface though, with all of this issues, the complexity level start to add up very quickly. After you done tuning then you have to deal with her again during mixing and because of her poor harmonics performance, she can be perceived as sound weak or strained and combine with Luka's excessive fundamental tone, her voice can be ear piercing and that's not a good combination.

Either peoples get tired of using her or finding better alternative so it wouldn't surprise me.
Maybe it just me but i don't like EQ with graph and curves that much because there is tendency that i try to make a EQ curves look beauty rather than make it sound beauty. Do you guy are victims too?

It sould be hard looking at what I'm cutting out if it's by ear and knobs only. Then again I'm completely inexperienced with mixing and don't touch it beyond presets and just having it there just because.

Oh, that's quite the opposite to me, when i use eq with fixed band i usually spend time with eq less than a minute but when i use something like pro-q i tend to spend a lot of time tweaking it.
I still remember back then, there is a eq module with only 3 band with fix frequency point (4-4.5 band is considered a luxury) and it's so so hard to go wrong when eqing even though have 0 experience, i still do decently well with it.

Some old analog mixer don't even have eq, so i have to used gain as eq.
If OS keep getting upgrade to the point that your software (DAW, vocal synth editor etc..) are not working anymore and this is the software that you depend on it everyday. What do you do?

Stop upgrades your OS in order to keep using the software? or finding alternative software?

I just curious, because there is a lot of peoples who still use 15-20+ year old software everyday.
I mean, some producers that i know still using Windows XP.

I would say stop getting OS upgrades, because the software I use is all I care about. for vocal synth and DAW software is not easy to just say "use a virtual machine" or "use linux with wine software to use it" because in those cases there will easily be some audio lag/issues.
indeed, many producers and companies of all kinds still use windows xp or windows 7, and because buying an used PC with win xp is very cheap, I support them. In the meantime, I would also look for some alternatives for the future, or just buy some extra old PCs :haiyi_ani_lili:

I completely forgot about buying extra old laptop. I'm still using my old toshiba laptop that i use for programming the rhythm sequence and midi mapping for live performance, it's such a well build machine but it's already exceeding it's lifespan(27y/o laptop). The program i use is very old too and it doesn't work with modern CPU and if i use modern sequence control software, i cannot use my old keyboard and sound rack. This seems to be the only option i have.

I do use a up to date DAW like reaper, mostly for editing, recording and mixing, but when actually i making a song and anything sound design i still use cubase 5 (2007 i think). I fear that one day my vocaloid 4 will not work anymore because it's too old to keep up with modern hardware and software.
    Happy birthday!
You may heard peoples saying that if buying doesn't mean you owning it then piracy isn't stealing and justified. I don't agree with this and i think a lot of peoples have a similar idea like me.

But after i saw a lot of "questionable" move by the companies and some even more absurd... My opinions start to shift... Who knows? They might even support piracy behind the wall.

Just to be clear though, i'm not trying to say that i'm going to sail the high seas or doing something similar. It just inside my mind for a long time now and there is a TONS of examples but there is one like Reason studios. I bought perpetual licenses from them (complete bundle) to use their instruments in rewire mode, i considered myself a royal customer to them since i support them whenever i can (i think their stuff is great) and just 2-3 months ago and they decided to shutdown offline authorization out of tin air and older reason (anything below version 8) are no longer supported, which mean i CANNOT uninstall the software because if i uninstall the reason i will lost my licenses forevers. Unfortunately i use my new machine and i have to reinstall everything without knowing it.

Yes, i do contact them with "reason".. all i asked them is very simple.. move my old license to a new version of reason that support online authorization and i offer them to charge me with reasonable fee or removing copy protection from my old reason so i can continute using it.
I offer them generosity and fairness. This is what their employee reply me: I'm afraid that non of your proposed resolusions are feasible, removing the authorization system from software is impossible.

When i bought a software licenses i honoring their users agreements and TOS every single word. All they do is basically snatch the software license out of my hand and spit on my face and rub all over it.

There is many example similar to this like w*ves, av*d, PA, harr*son etc etc.. and it become a trend now. I don't think i will take revenge on offending company since there is nothing good came out of it. At least i learned that even these multi-million dollar companies CANNOT be trusted.

Ah, those are crappy moves on Reason's part, for sure. I hate subscription-based pricing, and especially when a company that didn't previously use it forces people to go over to it. I'm a bit concerned that PreSonus will start doing that with Studio One, actually, since they've been really pushing Studio One+ (their subscription where you pay every month to get everything they offer) recently. If they start forcing people to use that, I'll seriously have to consider switching DAWs--maybe to Cubase or FL Studio (not sure what their pricing is, though). It just seems hard to accept for a hobbyist to pay 1) every month for something that I want to feel free to do/not do during a given month as I see fit (since I'm making music as a hobby/to be creative/for fun, rather than as a job), 2) for a large number of tools that I probably won't use, and 3) with no control over when that price will increase in the future.

I'm sorry for the rant, if you wanted to switching DAWs (maybe in future) i highly recommend FL Studio... it just too good. If you ok with their working environment and you get a free lifetime upgrade with compatitive price and they kept their promise since first version of FL, At least you can rest assured that they wont stab you in the back.

Cubase is overpriced with annoying dongle, Price is around 580-ish USD without physical dongle.
I'm a little surprised that this channel would have a content that can reach 1000+ views

One of the few covers that i actually feel emotionally attached to while i making it. Aside from Pierce the Clear Blue Sky and The 15-Year Old Assertion. Maybe that's why Luka sounds very different from other cover i made and it take quite a long time to edit too (like 2 month-ish inside vocaloid editor), i do like imprint my singing style in all of my cover but most of the time it didn't fit well with the song overall.

Actually. . . i don't think luka would work with this song since keys of this song it's wayyyy outside luka range (like a octave higher).
While im try to compared between Nico premium versus YT premium, Nico at least give you something regularly, even though you are just regular users. Meanwhile YT regular users, well. . . you might experience it already.

I personally have Youtube premium, but it's mostly a quality of life change? No ads, you can watch some films for free ect. + Youtube Music is decent as an alternative to Spotify/Apple if you're not already paying for a service. I don't know what NND gives though for premium so I can't speak on it. :o

Offhand, I believe Nico premium offers the ability to replace an already uploaded video (presumably without losing the existing views/comments/etc.), to stop and resume watching a video without losing your place, to remove ads, and to upload a video and schedule when it becomes visible. I'm sure there are other benefits, too; there's probably a page that describes it somewhere.

The scheduled video feature would be awesome for Vocacolle. Though I want to think Premium costs about $60/year...which isn't bad, though it's a chunk for the benefit of scheduling two videos a year. Doesn't mean I wouldn't consider going for it, since I basically have to take a day off work in order to participate without the video scheduling feature.

At the same time, I kind of like having to actually be there when the contest starts and do the upload manually--it's exciting, and makes you feel like you're really participating.

You can also get the scheduled video feature by leveling up your Nico account to level 18 (I think.), though I'm not sure I've found an explanation of what/how much you have to do to level up your account. If anything, I'm guessing it's based on how many videos you post/your engagement with other videos.

Nico offers a ticket very often, something like -85% discount coupon or super bonus lottery ticket and there is a lot more than i can count and this is just normal account. For a Nico premium users you get a little more benefits than normal account. But i have to admit that YT have more potential than Nico even though, you can make a tiny profits from YT it's... so very little when compare to a YT decaded ago.
    Beautiful singing performance.

If you prefer vocal synth version, i made a UTAU cover of this song like 1-2 years ago

There's alot of things need to be considered when choosing voicebanks for a song (maybe it just me), i still think Renri is better than luka for a song like this.

Three years seems to be about what I do. I bought my iPhone 14S last year, an iPhone SE in 2020 and the phone before that was a used 6S I bought around 2017. Getting a current flagship definitely makes for a smoother experience than a midrange or older phone...

    I do a voicebanks comparison.
As we all know that every voicebank are not the same and this comparison is an pretty good example of how vastly different it is.
Render from the same projectfile, with very little input from users.

    Miku_Original

    Luka_soft(ish)

    VY1_Natural

In my opinion, Miku give me the best result. It's sound so good that give me an illusion that i'm soooo good at it but the fact is i didn't do anything.

VY1 is very good, Luka probably need more works.
If people consider a oscillator is the heart of all synthesizer then i would considered filter is the soul of all synthesizer.
This might be in unpopular opinion category but mixing and tuning tutorial is kinda pointless in general, and for a reasons... There is so much to be taken into account.

I kinda disagree. It honestly depends what's your objective is.

That's the same principle with any tutorial that isn't about very laborial job in general, but I will use tuning tutorials as an example. Some people think it's not possible to teach how to tune because it's very personal (Specially bc of what you said, there's too much to be taken into account), but there are things within this field that are universal and that's it (Ironically, it's the laborial part XD).

If you want to make your V3 or bellow vb growl you need to speed up the vibrato.
If you want a melism you need to play with pitch changing.

And all of this translates in pratically universal shapes and possible note bendings (Sure u can do it with plugins, but they will do just the same). They change between songs for sure, but the essence stays the same. What I want to say is that a compressor will make lower sounding frequencies higher and higher sounding frenquencies lower, equalizers cut or amplify frequencies, reverb creates space and etc.

The essence, how it works, of those "subjective" things can and should be teached. The style can be teached too, like those tutorials that teachs you to do those crazy slap back reverbs, but style isn't the essence and is something subjective to the artist and it's own expression.

And that, the "style" part, is why you think those tutorials are useless. Because most of tutorials tries to teach style, and not the essence, tho it's not useless too. At the end of the day, it all depends of what purpose is said tutorial serving it's consumer and what approach said consumer is in mind when thinking about to consume said tutorials.

I agree with some of your comments.
Ofcourse, a fundamental tutorials and some essential tutorials like how to operate the tools is not useless, these are mandatory. I have to be clear about this.

Keep in mind that i'm not saying that anything tutorial is "completely useless" but most tuning/mixing tutorial have fundamental flaw, please let me explain.
Example of tuning. We all know and agree that every single voicebanks is not the same and does not behave the same, hence they response very different to the users inputs and how much voicebank do we have currently? Miku alone is 6-7 voicebank already. Especially UTAU.... it's countless.
I share my vsq file and i get asked quite often that why it's doesn't sound like your cover, is you purposely manipulate your project file? etc etc.... Ofc it is not, but it's doesn't work with every voicebanks, i have to stop sharing it because i'm tired of having to explain over and over.

Tuning is entirely contextual just like mixing, it's one of many small part of a big picture.
and there is so much of variation that have to be taken to account as i mention. You need expierence, understanding and all knownledge requirement. made a trip & trick by assumeing that people already have all of these requirements is pointless and this example is just scratch the surface.

When i teachs my friend to do mixing or tuning i teach them about fundamental and anything essential but it take time to gain expierences themself. Actually, those fancy tricks is do more damage than helping and i do recommended peoples who wanted to get into these hobbies, learn the fundamental part first.
After i used Teto and Renri on SynthV and UTAU for quite sometime, i do actually like it on UTAU more however, Renri and Teto sound is substantially different when i compare it side by side. It's hard to describe or explain into word, i would say UTAU had more character or more color, SynthV are sound more cleaner/clearer.
This does not mean SynthV is sound not as good as UTAU, what i am saying is completely 100% subjective and keep in mind that UTAU voices colors/quality heavily rely on "Resamplers formant method" they use.
This is quite similar comparison between Miku v2 and Miku v4 or Miku NT. Both are Miku, very pronounce and can be easily recognized, but it just sound different when A/B compare it.

I'm not sure about looping/replay function on youtube count as views duration since my videos have very low views count so i guess it might be a bot or some random people forget to turn off replay function.
