    Essential 101

“Study your hero’s influences, not your heroes.”

Every creator needs influences. Which means your hero has influences too.

It’s valuable to know your hero’s music inside and out. But knowing how they got to their sound is twice as useful. Knowing your hero’s influences gives you a roadmap to your favourite sound.

All Music are great places to research your favourite creators. Use them to hear and see how your idols use their own influences.

Doing a bit of influencer research not only gives you more to get inspired by, it also helps you apply your own influences better.
Plugins manufacturer nowadays focus on made cool looking plugin rather than coding and made it convenient.

most people love snake oil, i guess.

Yes, I hate all the knob plugins that explain nothing of what they are actually doing. Do you watch those is it snake oil reviews too?

@Prism from White Sea Studio? Yes, i watch those vids too.

This rant is come from my frustration. Some plugin company (i can't say the name) They have so much resources but they spend all of them on graphic, and beauty but they rejected coding, UI experience and make it complicated as much as they can to make it "cool looking"

I spend 20mins tweaking "that" compressor like a 5y/o toys, and not getting the result i want, and because the loop still playing for 20mins, my ear get fatigue, and i lost perspective. (also my willing to work)

After that, i use the plugin that most people call it "Ancient". The sonitus compressor (made in 1998 btw) and i spend time like 1-2mins and i get result i want...
i mean... over 20 y/o plugin completely out perform most 2021 plugins with "state of the art" technology.... that's sound ridiculous isn't it?

I do feel like that some of the old plugins still work the best sometimes.

Vocaloid 2 won't let you export a VSQ file without having something on the piano roll, so this is file contains one "a" note at C3, using Luka V2 with a tempo of 120 BPM. Hope this helps!

I found some interesting idea from community, about using tools-plugins is considered "cheating".
I don't know how people get that idea from but... i never have a thought about this.

    I respect all opinion.

    @sketchesofpayne
I never heard about this kind of idea of using tools = cheating, (at least from musician, audio engineer community) that's why this quite interesting to me.
I completely agree with your opinion and i always think that "This is one of the main reason why we develop computer for"-- to make life easier.

@mobius017 I'm not only focus on the tools like autotune or vocal synths, but the overall picture of music in general. But i get your point.
From my experience, working with human can be super complicated or very simple, depend on the person and their emotion at the moment.

I think the opinion that using VSTs is 'cheating' comes from beginners with no experience making music outside of vocal synth covers. Like vocal synths, every plugin requires skill to use and master. For example, using EQ is an art with as much depth as tuning parameters. So being able to use multiple tools makes you more skilled - not less.

Vocal synths are themselves considered 'cheating' because you don't need to know how to sing. So it's pretty funny that even people using electronic tools find ways to demonise other electronic tools. As a listener, my only response to someone avoiding a plugin that could make their work better/more efficient is 'whhyyy??'. It's confusing, not impressive!

(Mm.... But, I personally have a tremendous singing voice? I'm actually a prodigious talent. I mean, you know that; I know that; everyone here knows that. ;) My using a synth is more of a first choice; I do it because it's what I want to do.

Ok, so only everything after the ;) was true. I was honest in my point, though, albeit made in tongue-in-cheek fashion!)
