  • as an electronic/indie-pop producer + enjoyer, i'd like to appreciate avanna for being the resident "soft indie/jazz voice" vocaloid

ok but seriously her tone is so nice and i'm once again very glad she exists

i love miku as well, because she comes with a wealth of tones and is so versatile but even her original vb is super versatile and responds to tuning extremely well

are there any vocaloids i don't have that i really like? gumi, oliver and fukase are three
Small AVANNA tuning tip: Keep ending [h] to a small separate note at the end; that way it's often not so harsh/obvious. With her you can also put "h" after ending consonants to add some impact to them.

I don't like to use "h" alone, my tip is to use "h" + "*out" (h *out). "*out" allows you to loop certain sounds until another one appears (This works that way with CUL, but maybe vary between voicebanks). With that you don't need to worry that much about how long the "h" note will be.

With that you can create exhalation sounds similar to Kyaami's Henceforth cover, here is an example:

    Normal short and long h:

Se that it sounds like a fax machine and not an "h"? XD CUL's "h" sucks, I believe it's because she is a V3 and don't has a separete "h" recorded.

Normal short and long h + out:

Here is a cover using the h + out combo:

It's supposed to work for all V4 and bellow voicebanks since the misc phoneme "*out" is a phoneme that is around since Vocaloid 1. Here is a list with other misc phonemes:

    AmazingStrange39
    I don't believe *out actually still works...Apparently it was a V1-JP-voicebank-only thing.

Miku V4X JP does have a couple exhale phonemes though, *#1 (short) and *#2 (long)

Or maybe CUL has it but Miku and Avanna don't.

But that's OK, every voicebank works differently. For example, Miku JP and AVANNA have [Asp] and both Miku Englishes don't, and AVANNA can use [l] syllabically while Miku English can't; Avanna and Miku V4 English can use [n], [m] and [N] syllabically while Miku V3 English can't (for example, to have her hum i have to write [m] [m] instead of [m] [-]). Miku V4X Original (and English obviously) has her own recorded ending consonants, while the other V4X voicebanks don't and thus their ending consonants are choppy.

i just looked it up and avanna's recommended range does indeed end lower than fukase's (d2 vs. f2)

and unlike some other female loids that strain a bit in their lower registers avanna remains strong. so i guess she's a contralto?

maybe a lyric contralto though, since her voice is pretty soft and light; i guess someone like sachiko would be more of a dramatic contralto.

apparently nolwenn leroy is a mezzo-soprano...

...so is avanna a contralto or a mezzo? i guess we're going back to that question now

like, she'd definitely be an alto in the choir (according to my mom who's been in choir), but...

i know she's a lower voice type than me at least, because her low range is notes that are very low for me but comfortable on her

I'd def see Avanna as contralto, though I'd say it more onto LOLa and galaco
    AmazingStrange39
    AmazingStrange39
Is Galaco deep? I thought she was a mezzo-soprano haha (Update: Wow, she's actually a bit deeper than I thought! Avanna's still deeper than her though.)

Lola is DEFINITELY contralto. Like a DEEP contralto, almost tenor
has anyone else noticed that avanna has just a tiny bit of vocal fry on some of her initial vowels? kind of a neat little detail i suppose, possibly coming from the fact that her vp is a professional singer
so i tried making miku and avanna ai vbs (first on rvc then moved to kits) and something funny happened

i became...complacent. why spend all that time tuning when you can just maybe-not-so-legally make ai versions of the voices (i used renders rather than ripped samples but still) and boom, instant covers (that are probably horrible for copyright)? it's a rush, it's addicting.

with that funny thing that happened to me really dawning on me, i stopped and went right back to using vocaloid normally

Even synth v auto tuning does that to me. It’sa really weird feeling.

It's worse with AI voice conversion though because you're not even arranging it. In Kits.AI you can just insert a YT video and it'll split the track for you even

I might still use it for "gijinka" purposes because making gijinka UTAU never turned out well for me. And also to drown out the Vocaloid model renders still on my Kits account since I don't believe you can exactly delete them (the models are already deleted and their names no longer show up though)

Update: No need for that, I can just mess with the royalty-free voices for a while
    AmazingStrange39
    AmazingStrange39
What's funny is that the AI actually started to pick up the voicebanks' habits. Like Miku V3 ENG's nasally vowels and imperfect L sounds and AVANNA's punchy consonants. With enough training it starts to sound like a heavily phoneme-edited Vocaloid cover
i find it interesting that avanna and v3 lily have the same optimum vocal range, and thus probably the same basic vocal type, and yet in terms of voice quality they are very very different

lily's voice is deep, powerful and heavy and could probably be mistaken for a higher male voice; notably she sounds a bit like utatane piko

avanna's voice is soft, warm, and lighter in quality and sits pretty firmly in feminine territory

maybe avanna is more "lyric" while lily's more "dramatic"? i have yet to properly learn the terms

Lily is one I'd like to see a modern update to, because of who the voice provider is...Masuda Yuri from m.o.v.e., the band that did the openings for Initial D.

That'd be nice tbh. I think Lily AI would sound really good
so basically in talkloids, when i think about avanna's speaking style i basically think about making her sound irish, but also having her say things that fit her personality in a way that fits her voice. so i tend to go for kind of a gentle lilt and a polite way with words. maybe a bit of upward intonation from time to time for femininity points. but she talks a fair bit lower than miku does because, well, her voice is deeper (also miku talks in a pretty high pitch anyway)

i actually managed to figure out how to mimic an "irish T" phoneme which really helps. basically, [s ] and a tiny [l_0] on C4 or above, use pitch bend instead of notebending if you need the pitch to go lower than that
so i had a dream last night that avanna got a synthv ai voicebank. i remember being disappointed in the tone (rather than sounding more like her vp i think it was dulled by the engine, which is kinda inaccurate to synthv tbh, though to be fair i only have experience with basic, and even then it may have sounded more like untuned vocaloid6) but also upset that i no longer had all 1 of avanna's voicebanks (though apparently in the dream i also had a version of vocaloid for fl studo mobile and i had avanna's vb on that). though i wanted to hear more to see if i'd wind up liking it with more exposure, i had trouble finding videos in the end. the saddest part for me? avanna ai didn't have a lite version

(tbf i don't have all bajillion of miku's voicebanks but i've still got a good set of mikus; i have ALMOST all her unique banks; discounting nt i'd just need light, vivid and chinese to complete the collection)

ok but seriously, there is something weirdly refreshing about "standalone" vocal synths that aren't constantly being updated and marketed and promoted and just kinda do their own thing

also, i looked up "avanna synthv" when i woke up and didn't find anything about an avanna update, lol

(additionally, i found her terms and conditions in the dream and they said you could do anything you wanted with her as long as you didn't use her alongside/to promote miku xP i'm so glad that dream wasn't real)

on the note of avanna, have i mentioned how much i love her tone already, accent aside? it's deep and rich, yet sweet and light at the same time...like whipped chocolate

and really, i do wonder, if zero-g got back into vocal-synth making, which engine they'd choose to develop for
    PearlStarLight5
    PearlStarLight5
If Zero-G made vocal synths again, I'd say either Vocaloid6 or SynthV. I at least wouldn't expect CeVIO since they are focused on Japanese voicebanks and none of its third parties are from outside of Japan. On that note, I'd like to think they would pick V6, maybe with a new duo or updating Miriam and Sonika.
    AmazingStrange39
    AmazingStrange39
I mean, Sonika needs an update pretty badly, unlike Avanna whom I think still holds up well today. It's less that Soni sounds bad, not at all, it's more all the glitches and noises in her voicebank.
y'know, aki said avanna's clothing is mainly inspired by celtic roman-britannia, but i wonder if her dress specifically is inspired at all by irish dance uniforms? with all the ornate patterns on it and all that.
    MillyAqualine
    MillyAqualine
It could be, some may have mixed inspirations (on a personal note, on my side, I've mixed a few different elements for Sakanne ; a tuxedo (with bowtie because I love those and wante something different from ties), bermuda for an energetic, Summerish vibe, cabochons because I was highly in my cabochon drawings era and big silky, transluscent ribbons because of some old school representations of Arabic and Maghreb clothing, mostly during the orientalism period)

i know the cloak is pretty prominent in old celtic clothing...and avanna is still the only vocaloid to even have one of those which is kinda surprising

i think she's also the only vocaloid with prominent, consistent freckles (sonika apparently has summer freckles but i guess they disappear when it's not summer?)

she sheds her summer freckles to grow her winter face 🤷‍♂️
Tried to imagine my Vocaloids drawing each other. I attempted to give them different handwriting as well!

i think it's interesting when characters have a particular way of speaking

apparently in the musical isotope comics the loids themselves often "say" words in katakana, and i think they each have a unique way of speaking; for example, kafu likes to say "desu", and rime seems to speak in a feminine way

I already thought about doing something like that to make my tunning more unique. I was thinking about making her sing a rolled "R", but don't know.

like with the engloids, having them use language that indicates where they're from. i have avanna and i want to bring out her accent in talkloids and other content so i think about this a lot XP

but it's not just where they're from, it's their personalities too. for example, sonika might be more excitable and spontaneous while avanna's more mild-mannered, so showing that through sonika using more casual language and slang, while avanna's more polite and gentle in her language, could help (also sonika's british and avanna's irish, but that's not what i'm talking about here XP; there are brits that speak in a more "posh" way and brits that speak in vernacular, same goes with irish people; there are polite irish and rude irish, same with brits)
yeah, i feel like avanna loving 7up is my new favorite thing

can it please be her character item? it fits her pretty well- bubbly yet mild

also, according to irish people, flattened 7up is medicine for pretty much everything, and avanna has a soothing voice and is often depicted with a kind personality so...
I just found out that Mo Qingxian is taller than Avanna and now I feel like my life is a lie (ok, not seriously)

but really, i did think avanna was the tallest female vocaloid.

i would've made fanart of avanna and aoki lapis too, commenting on how funny it was that the largest and smallest female vocaloids are both fantasy themed and have soft voices + "nice girl" vibes (though lapis is very much a soprano and avanna's an alto). i mean, i guess they're the largest and smallest vocaloid3s?

but nope, qingxian's taller (avanna might still be heavier, though qingxian doesn't have a canon weight, and weight irl fluctuates while height tends to stay the same for a good chunk of life)

though if avanna were heavier than qingxian (considering chinese beauty standards and yuezheng ling's inexplicably low weight, i doubt she wouldn't be), would that make her overall larger, since she's not shorter by a ton?
    AmazingStrange39
    AmazingStrange39
avanna would be 168cm, qingxian is 171cm. there was an amino page that got avanna's height wrong, assuming 5'6" to be 5.6 feet and thus 171cm, when 5'6" translates to 168cm, because i suppose the poster wrote feet and decimals instead of feet and inches (decimals divide into 10, feet are 12 inches, so it would be innacurate)

but nah, i think i'll accept that avanna isn't the tallest, haha
