  • i know some ppl hate to hear it but as a long time vocaloid user im still kinda pissed about the release of v5, v6, and now this apparent new one. v5 was like.... a waste of time honestly. hardly used, hardly any releases, didnt bring anything groundbreaking to the table. v6 took a long time to release after all that time of v5 sitting around with barely anything, so it was late to the party on AI banks and even when it did release many were not impressed by it compared to others (myself included.

with v5 and 6, even putting beside my subjective opinions on the voices or quality, felt like such a cheat in terms of my money. i bought v5 for its still admittedly high price after v4 only for it to kinda be a waste with how little support and use it had from yamaha. literally had no use for it unless i really wanted some of those new features which wasnt enough to make me want to open it over v4 for a simple cover.

v6 releases and its basically the same but with AI and some new features-- and im supposed to want that after v5 got next to nothing? that i paid $100+ for before and should do again? why did i get v5 then? and trust that v6 actually gets some decent support and releases? which i am unsure will even happen now that they have jumped on this new beta stuff, its hard to know if itll be integrated into v5 or its own thing. my trust is totally lost at this point, especially when i am not personally pleased with the quality of what they have released.

I'm going to be honest—you articulated your points about V5, V6, and VX β-STUDIO way better than I could if I were to do it
I agree with all your points, by the way, despite me being excited for β-STUDIO

    EDIT:

It's pretty much par for the course for any music production software. Most DAWs end up costing a few hundred for a new version every year, synth collections like Arturia's V collection are similarly expensive, Kontakt/Komplete is insane...and many audio products are heavily trying to move to subscriptions instead. (Even Logic Pro is now only available as a subscription on the iPad, which I think is a sign of things to come.)

The thing about vocal synths is they're a relatively niche product, and the economics of software engineering are not kind to them continuing to be developed. Speaking as a software engineer in the US (where, to be fair, we do average higher salaries than JP), it would only take 5-10 engineers to cost a million dollars a year in developer time...and that's a minuscule number of developers for a product of that complexity. More like 50-100 is likely, plus product managers, human managers, UI designers, machine learning specialists, etc.. Assuming they make more like $50K/year in Japan instead of $100-200K in the US (based on an 8M yen Square Enix developer salary I saw posted once), that's still easily five million dollars a year in salaries alone (ignoring executive salaries, any profit, etc)...which would mean they'd have to sell twenty-five to fifty thousand units every year to break even, based on the upgrade/full version pricing. Which seems like a lot for the relative number of people making vocal synth music.

The new Vocaloid studio beta thing isn't likely to be released as a commercial product for at least another year, maybe even two, assuming work started shortly before V6 was released. I'm just glad they're still working on it, and aren't moving to a subscription model (which would cost more and make it harder to use older versions) so far.
didnt feel the need to add more on my post but the feedback thing in 1.10 is actually interesting. i sometimes use the generated tuning as a base, but i wasnt using retakes bc i would have to do it over and over. and i didnt always like the quirks from the normal generation. and i am now seeing the effects of the feedback when i switch back to 1.9 (the 1.10 version of the banks' learning tuning does NOT apply to all versions) and it is very different. it has gotten some offpitch and wiggly lines id see from yuma and has taken into account my preferences pretty well. but im still forgetting it exists so it doesnt do everything i want lol. i gotta keep thinking about it
my repeating behavior lately is thinking "oh yeah i finished that cover" *looks for it on my pc* *repeats it numerous times bc i feel like it* *closes the files* *goes to sleep* *forgets it exists and never posts it*

This has happened to me on multiple occasions involving Synthesizer V project files.
The ones from 2022? I didn't even bother naming them (most of them are titled with some variation of 'main' and 'cho' from the original USTs).
So you can imagine what that's like...yeah

i have SO many files its insane...... gosh i cant even keep track. i tend to order my files by voice choice (folder for yuma, ryo, etc) but then i get caught up in jus chaging the voices anyways. and so then i get lost and cant figure out where thinsg are haha,. and so they just get lost in there until i recall tyhe specific song

I don't even do that—my project files (SVPs) are stored in the folders: 'shit,' 'down,' and 'more,' with the exception of 'ust' for, well, USTs.
The folders are in my D: drive
in my early days of covering (2015-16) it often felt like a race to cover songs with myself and ppl i followed or just general ppl in the community. like you had to be the first to cover it with voice x/y/z first and any other cover ppl made w that voice after was irrelevant. i think its what often had my churning out covers and getting burnt out. i mean i had moots commenting :aw man i was gonna cover that with *voice*" etc. that was a common thing. but now i just dont think about ti at all. idc if someone already covered it, my cover is my own. its unique

Huh, that's exactly what I deal with. Not because of pressure from other people, but thinking 'well, someone else did it and most likely did it better than me'. But I suppose, no one owns any combination of song or voice. Like, I've seen 3 Solaria covers of Athena and 2 Jun covers of Unknown Mother Goose, and I listened to all of them anyway. They were totally different too. Heck, there's even unsuprisingly 2 Asterian covers of Evermore and admittedly, the other one did it better than me, but they were a more experienced user and I was a minimalist tuner back then.

@PearlStarLight5 its definitely a thing i can imagine ppl think! maybe even not realizing it too, as i never really thought hard about it, just considered it a normal response tbh. and youre right too, i would often listen to multiple covers of the same voice if i saw them anyways, which kinda shows you shouldnt worry about it either.... took me quite a long time to realize that and just make covers without searching to see if someone already covered it.
i saw a video that was like "what is vocal fry, and why everyone HATES it" and i guess its about pop singers over doing vocal fry but it made me laugh bc vocal synth users have been begging for vocal fry for 20 years

even still we dont really have it!! synth v dropped the actual attempt in the old editor and [cl] doesnt really work right. vocaloid 5/6 tried with the attack release but it was weird.

oddly i think my favorite vocal fry has been people's utaus. which i think is because its literally the VP recording it and so it fits. vocaloid failed at it bc it wasn't the VP's samples, just an effect (much like the bad growls where they reused some basic growl instead of the VP's own). synth v just hasnt revisited it properly
hey guys..... any vocaloids you want me to draW? just little doodles... and i mean only vocaloids! no other synths (edit to add this will be shared on my fan art thread on the forums)
dang it, now theres two notably popular vocaloid songs with very similar Blue names (Blue Earth and Blue Planet)

from 6 months ago (love Lanndo <3)

    this morning

this isnt an insult btw. just think its a funny coicidence. deco only posted today so im sure itll gain a lot more traction soon too. actually, its very funny that the thumbnails feel so similar too

(thinking about lanndo's... kinda wanna cover it but i need to find someone to comm a midi for....)
i love going and switching around versions of banks in Synth V, its really crazy how much things have changed over the versions... Ryo and Yuma was a really big one when i went back to a very old file. i think most appparent are cross language improvement and also more obvious differences in vocal modes for a lot of them
can you edit oto's in openutau??? was wondering if maybe it has a more streamlined/easier to use way to edit vb's in program .. always been a hassle for me in normal utau but i havent touched openutau in a long time

I've never tried it so I don't know if it's any better, but it looks like you can edit otos when you go to Tools > Singers.
doing a cover with natalie in japanese and english, and its interesting but she is very 'solid' and strong naturally with japanese, but speaking english she falters. the straight forward and simple phonetics of japanese make it easier to keep that sound i guess, where english is complex with all its consonants mixing in, cutting off the ability for vowels to shine and be belted the same way

its a cover of error. i actually wanted to do this w yuma but couldnt get him sounding right but plugged him back in after natalie and. well he sounds good but oh boy, his voice is doing some funky things lol

yuma does not react to the japanese .h notes i put when converted to .hh the same way lol......
also the way the last word faces out isnt on purpose ???? and idk why its happening
something interesting happens when you export vocals on synth v but tell it to render a track that has been muted. i noticed how it doesnt render any noise obviously, but i didnt realize it does but its... like. horribly corrupted. so it does render a voice? but its all fucked up. weird.

I've had this happen. I've also had it screw up the gain on the export-- it'll generate it at max gain and it sounds horribly bitcrunched LOL. Very unfortunate.

the weirdest thing i had happen (quite a few versions back) was it rendered two voices in one track-- not in engine but the finished file it rendered. i had changed the vocals from like.. natalie to solaria, and suddenly half way through the render it gave me it switch to natalie again. so weird @pico
when i stopped making vocaloid covers my main channel's thing and stopped so i could also not face the pressure of people expecting covers, i have since just made covers and left them unposted on my pc. and that was the thing i wanted to get to- still make stuff when i feel like it but no pressure to share them. but also now i cant even figure out how many covers i have produced in the last 2~ years and what may be posted or finished lol. maybe some day ill make a massive archive of every single one, maybe just for my own organizational sake
man synth v has been taking longer to open than before... idk if its just me or if the programs just getting slower as it updates

This was part of the new update! it was mentioned in the update notes, and there's a feature within to save files as compatible with previous versions.
Given the design alterations in AI Retakes feature, project files saved using version 1.10.0b1 and subsequent versions will not be compatible with prior versions of Synthesizer V Studio (1.9.0 and earlier). For user convenience, an option has been introduced in the “File” menu, allowing projects to be saved in a format compatible with Synthesizer V Studio 1.9.0.

I am so uninterested in updating that I'm just sticking with 1.9 until I buy another voice, which I don't see myself doing anytime soon as I'm content with the lineup I have and I literally have 4 mains at this point

@Cluemily ah i mustve missed that when i looked through... good to see there is a way to save it for the older version still. in general though seems good that utaformatix also seems to reset it in some form, though im curious if itll continue to do that.
